How to Connect a Windows AI Workstation to Remote Developers Securely

The safest design starts with the work, not the protocol. Use Windows OpenSSH for command-line work, automation and file transfer; use Remote Desktop (RDP) for an interactive Windows desktop; and use Remote Desktop Services (RDS) or virtual desktops when several developers, partners or applications need controlled access. Put every option behind named identities, strong authentication, device checks, least-privilege permissions and a restricted network path.

Encryption is necessary but not sufficient. A secure connection also limits who can reach the workstation, what each account can do, which devices are trusted, how privileged actions are approved and how sessions are monitored and revoked.

Choose the access pattern before opening a port

Write down the actual requirement for each developer. A shell-only workflow has a different risk and capacity profile from a full desktop, and neither is automatically suitable for concurrent users.

Requirement Windows pattern What it provides Important boundary
Shell, scripting, automation or secure file transfer OpenSSH Server Encrypted SSH sessions between a client and the workstation Permit only intended accounts and approved network sources; inspect the SSH firewall rule
One person needs Windows applications, files and a desktop Remote Desktop An interactive graphical session Use a supported host edition, keep Network Level Authentication enabled and avoid direct internet exposure
Several developers, partners or application-only users RDS, RemoteApps or virtual desktops Session-based desktops, pooled or personal VDI, and published applications Plan gateway security, certificates, capacity, profiles, latency and GPU requirements

Microsoft supports incoming RDP hosting on Windows Pro, Enterprise, Education and Windows Server editions. Windows Home can initiate an RDP connection as a client, but it cannot host incoming Remote Desktop sessions. OpenSSH Server is supported on Windows 10 build 1809 and later and on the Windows Server versions listed in Microsoft’s OpenSSH documentation.

Use a decision checklist

  • Shell or GUI: Choose OpenSSH when a terminal and file-transfer channel are sufficient. Choose RDP when developers must use Windows-only tools or a graphical desktop.
  • One user or many: A single workstation session is not a multi-user delivery platform. Concurrent developers, partners or app-only access usually justify RDS or virtual desktops.
  • Network reach: Decide whether users need the workstation’s entire network or only a published application, repository or service. Narrower reach reduces the consequences of a stolen credential.
  • Identity: Confirm whether accounts are local, Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID accounts before selecting SSH authentication.
  • Control and evidence: Require MFA, device compliance, session logs and regular access reviews when source code, model assets, datasets, secrets or deployment systems are involved.
  • Performance: Interactive AI development can depend on GPU availability, profile storage and network latency. A pattern that works for a shell may feel unusable for a graphical workload.

Answer the access questions explicitly

Ask whether a developer needs an entire Windows desktop or only a compiler, notebook service, repository or transfer directory. Application-only delivery can reduce the number of files and network destinations exposed. Ask whether sessions must persist after a client disconnects, whether users need local customization, and whether partners should ever receive a persistent account. These answers influence the choice between session-based RDS, pooled VDI, personal VDI and a simple SSH service.

Also record where code and data must reside. Keeping sensitive assets on the workstation may simplify control, but it makes the workstation and every management path high-value targets. Moving work into a managed virtual-desktop environment can improve separation while adding gateway, certificate, profile and capacity responsibilities.

Map the workstation’s trust boundary

List the assets the workstation can reach before enabling remote access. An AI development machine might hold source code, model files, datasets, credentials or links to deployment environments, but the title alone does not establish that every machine contains production data. Classify the actual assets and apply controls to their sensitivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Draw the connection path from the developer’s device to the workstation. Include the developer endpoint, identity provider, VPN or gateway, jump host, firewall, workstation and any repository, pipeline, database or production system reachable from it. Each component is part of the trusted computing boundary. Microsoft warns that VPNs, jump servers and other intermediaries can become high-value targets because they provide connectivity or handle credentials.

For each hop, document who operates it, how it is patched, which logs it produces and which administrators can change its policy. A secure workstation behind an unmanaged jump host still has an unmanaged entry point. Conversely, a well-maintained gateway cannot compensate for excessive permissions on the workstation account.

“OpenSSH is a connectivity tool for remote sign-in that uses the SSH protocol. It encrypts all traffic between client and server to eliminate eavesdropping, connection hijacking, and other attacks.” — Microsoft Learn

Encryption protects traffic in transit; it does not decide whether the person, device, account or requested operation should be trusted.

Set up OpenSSH for shell and file-transfer work

Verify support and install only the server component you need

  1. Confirm that the workstation runs Windows 10 build 1809 or later, or a supported Windows Server release.
  2. In an elevated PowerShell window, check whether the OpenSSH capabilities are present:
Get-WindowsCapability -Online | Where-Object Name -like 'OpenSSH*'
  1. If the server capability is absent, install it:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name OpenSSH.Server~~~~0.0.1.0
  1. Start the SSH service and configure it to start with Windows:
Start-Service sshd
Set-Service -Name sshd -StartupType Automatic

Installing the service is not a complete access policy. The setup creates or verifies the inbound firewall rule named OpenSSH-Server-In-TCP for TCP port 22. Inspect that rule and restrict its allowed remote addresses to the approved route rather than assuming that a working rule should be reachable from the public internet.

Confirm the service is listening only where intended, and test from an approved source through the same route developers will use. A successful local test proves that the daemon works; it does not prove that the perimeter, identity checks or source restrictions are correct. Keep a documented change record for the service, firewall rule and permitted group.

Limit accounts and key exposure

Grant SSH access to named developer accounts or a controlled group. Do not use a workstation-wide administrator identity for routine development. Keep source repositories, credentials and deployment tools outside the reach of accounts that do not need them.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

For local Windows and Active Directory accounts, public-key authentication can avoid sending a password over the session. Treat the private key as equivalent to a password: protect the file, use a strong passphrase, store it only on managed devices and replace it after loss or suspected exposure. Microsoft documents that Microsoft Entra ID accounts do not support this Windows OpenSSH key-authentication method, so verify the identity architecture before making keys the only sign-in route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keys need a lifecycle, not just an initial setup. Record which account owns each authorized key, where it is deployed and when it was last reviewed. Remove an entry when a project ends, a device is retired or a contractor changes scope. If a private key may have been copied, replacement is safer than relying on the passphrase alone.

When a developer leaves a project, remove group membership, disable the account or revoke the credential according to your identity process. A key left on a former device remains a live credential until it is replaced or access is otherwise blocked.

Configure Remote Desktop for a graphical session

Enable RDP only on a supported host

  1. On a supported Windows host, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
  2. Turn on Remote Desktop and confirm the host name shown for connections.
  3. Leave Require devices to use Network Level Authentication enabled whenever the host and clients support it. Microsoft states that NLA adds an extra layer of security to Remote Desktop connections.
  4. Use the account-selection control to add only the named users or groups that require access. Members of Administrators and explicitly permitted remote users can connect; remove stale or overly broad membership.

Microsoft’s guidance says enabling Remote Desktop opens a port and recommends enabling it only on trusted networks. Do not treat the on/off switch as a perimeter design.

Check the host edition before troubleshooting clients. Windows Home may be useful as an RDP client, but upgrading or replacing the host is required for incoming sessions; enabling a client feature does not turn Home into an RDP server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the RDP path off the public internet

For external developers, use an organization-approved VPN or a managed gateway that enforces identity and device policy. Do not publish the workstation’s RDP listener directly to the internet merely because a port-forwarding rule makes it reachable.

In an RDS design, RD Gateway encapsulates RDP in HTTPS and can integrate with multifactor authentication and conditional-access policy. The gateway, identity services and any jump host still require patching, hardened configuration, restricted administrative roles and monitoring. A gateway reduces exposure; it does not make weak accounts or unmanaged devices safe.

When a VPN is selected, define which routes it advertises. A full-tunnel connection may provide more reach than a developer needs, while a narrowly scoped route can limit lateral movement. Whichever design is chosen, test failure behavior: a disconnected gateway or expired certificate should deny access rather than silently fall back to a broadly exposed listener.

Use RDS or virtual desktops for multiple developers

RDS can publish a complete desktop or individual RemoteApps. Microsoft describes session-based deployments, pooled VDI, personal VDI and hybrid models:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Session-based desktops: Multiple users share a server operating system while their sessions remain separated by the RDS service.
  • Pooled VDI: Users receive desktops from a shared pool, which can improve density and simplify replacement.
  • Personal VDI: A user receives an assigned virtual machine when persistent customization or isolation is important.
  • Hybrid delivery: Different applications or user groups can use session-based, pooled and personal resources together.

Choose among these models using concurrency, isolation, application compatibility, profile persistence, GPU demand, latency and operational capacity. Plan TLS certificates for protected roles, gateway placement, profile storage and session capacity before onboarding users. A low-latency graphical AI workflow may require GPU-aware hosts and a network path designed for interactive traffic.

Rank #3
Yubico - YubiKey 5 NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts

RDS is not simply “more RDP.” It introduces roles, licensing and operational dependencies that must be designed and maintained. Assign an owner for the gateway, connection broker or virtual-desktop hosts, profile storage and certificates. Decide how sessions are disconnected, reset and recovered, and test what happens when a host reaches capacity.

Partners may need an application without access to the full development desktop. RemoteApps or a separate virtual desktop can provide a narrower boundary than adding an external user to a workstation administrator group. Keep partner identities separate, set an expiry date and review their permitted applications and network destinations.

Enforce identity, MFA and device trust

Use named identities and least privilege

Create access groups that reflect the work: for example, shell developers, desktop developers and temporary administrators. Grant only the repositories, shares, pipelines, secrets, databases and production resources required for each role. Use strong, unique passwords for accounts with RDP access and remove broad or stale permissions during every access review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not share a team account to simplify onboarding. Shared credentials obscure who performed an action, make offboarding unreliable and prevent a precise response when a device is lost. Named accounts also make session and privilege logs useful for investigation.

Add multifactor authentication and endpoint checks

Require MFA wherever the identity architecture supports it, and evaluate the connecting device before allowing a session. Useful checks include enrollment, compliance state, disk protection, patch level and whether the device is organization-managed. Microsoft’s RDS MFA design uses a common gateway, Network Policy Server, Microsoft Entra ID and the NPS extension; it also requires enrollment, backup authentication, conditional-access policy and suitable network connectivity.

Plan recovery before enforcing MFA. Document enrollment, backup authentication and the process for a lost authenticator. A policy that has no recovery path encourages emergency bypasses, which can become permanent exceptions. Review conditional-access rules whenever the gateway, identity provider or developer population changes.

A FIDO2 security key can be an optional strong authenticator where the organization’s identity provider and policy support it. Buying a key alone does not create MFA or device trust; enrollment, recovery and policy enforcement are still required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make privileged access temporary

Handle administration separately from development. Microsoft’s privileged-interface guidance calls for strong user and device authentication, security-health validation, least privilege and access at the right time, with approval when required. Use just-in-time elevation where available, record who approved it and remove the elevation when the task ends.

Separate permission to connect from permission to administer. A developer may need an interactive desktop but not local administrator rights, firewall-change rights or access to production secrets. Review elevation requests for scope and duration, and ensure emergency access is logged and followed by a post-incident review.

Separate normal development from secure administration

For high-impact operations, use a dedicated hardened administration workstation or isolated administrative environment rather than the same desktop used for email, browsing and experimental code. Restrict the applications and network destinations available in that context, separate administrative and productivity identities and prefer hardware-backed authentication when supported.

Rank #4
Yubico - Security Key NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Key, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.

  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

This separation costs more and can reduce flexibility, so reserve it for paths that can change identity systems, repositories, secrets, production infrastructure or security controls. Ordinary coding can remain on a standard managed endpoint if its access is constrained and monitored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Budget for more than hardware. Dedicated administrative endpoints require hardened images, application allowlists, network policy, patching, support and user training. RDS and virtual desktops add gateway, certificate, profile-storage, host-capacity and monitoring work. These are operating costs and staffing commitments even when the workstation itself already exists.

Control tools, extensions and connected services

Allow only trusted IDE extensions, package sources and remote-development tools. Review who can change or approve code and pipeline definitions. Use identity federation for SaaS integrations where possible instead of creating unmanaged duplicate accounts.

Keep secrets out of source files and developer home directories. Give pipelines and service accounts only the permissions needed for their jobs, and separate development credentials from production credentials. A remote desktop that can reach every environment turns one stolen session into a broad incident; segment network routes and authorization accordingly.

Document which tools are approved for remote work and who reviews updates. Extensions and packages can change the code that runs with a developer’s privileges. Remove unused tools, disable unnecessary services and require review before an extension gains access to repositories, terminals or secrets.

Operate, monitor and retire access

Patch every component

Maintain secure configurations and current updates on the workstation, RDP or SSH service, gateway, VPN, jump host and virtual-desktop infrastructure. Intermediaries deserve the same urgency as the workstation because they concentrate connectivity and credentials.

Include certificates and configuration baselines in maintenance schedules. An expired certificate, changed firewall profile or unpatched gateway can interrupt legitimate work or create pressure for an unsafe workaround. Keep a tested rollback path that does not require opening a broader network route.

Collect useful events

Review successful and failed authentications, session starts, disconnects, privilege changes and group-membership changes. RDS guidance identifies Windows event logs and auditing as inputs to monitoring and SIEM workflows. Alert on unusual source devices, repeated failures, access outside approved hours and unexpected administrative elevation.

Correlate identity-provider, gateway, workstation and endpoint-compliance events. A single failed login is rarely decisive, but repeated failures followed by a successful session from a new device deserve investigation. Preserve enough context to determine which account, device, route and privilege were involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review and revoke

Set an owner and expiry date for every developer, partner and temporary administrator grant. Check device compliance and group membership regularly. Remove access when a task, contract or engagement ends, and replace exposed SSH keys or other credentials immediately.

Revoke dormant accounts and test the revocation process so that it works across the identity provider, gateway, workstation groups and virtual-desktop assignments.

Troubleshoot by symptom without weakening the boundary

SSH connection times out

  • Confirm the sshd service is running.
  • Check the OpenSSH-Server-In-TCP rule and its permitted profiles and source addresses.
  • Verify that the client is using the approved VPN, gateway or network route.
  • Do not solve a timeout by opening TCP port 22 to every internet address.

RDP is unavailable

  • Confirm the host edition supports incoming RDP; Windows Home cannot host it.
  • Check that Remote Desktop is enabled and the user is in the permitted group.
  • Verify NLA compatibility, MFA enrollment and device-compliance policy.
  • Check the gateway or VPN path before changing the workstation firewall.

A key or device may be compromised

  • Disable or remove the affected account or group membership.
  • Replace the SSH key or reset the credential using the organization’s emergency process.
  • Review authentication, gateway and workstation logs for the exposure period.
  • Re-enroll the replacement device and restore only the minimum required access.

The graphical session is slow

  • Measure network latency and the route to the gateway or host before changing security controls.
  • Check whether the workload needs GPU access and whether the selected RDS or VDI model provides it.
  • Review profile storage and host capacity for contention.
  • Do not bypass the gateway or device checks as a performance test; compare an approved path and tune capacity instead.

Deployment checklist

  • Document whether each user needs OpenSSH, a graphical desktop, a RemoteApp or a full virtual desktop.
  • Confirm Windows edition and OpenSSH version support before configuration.
  • Restrict firewall rules and network routes to approved sources or a hardened intermediary.
  • Use named accounts, strong authentication, MFA and device-health checks.
  • Keep NLA enabled for RDP and avoid direct internet exposure.
  • Protect SSH private keys with passphrases and plan replacement after exposure.
  • Separate development identities from privileged administration and make elevation temporary.
  • Constrain access to repositories, pipelines, secrets, databases and production systems.
  • Patch, log, review and revoke every component and grant.
  • Assign owners for gateways, certificates, profiles, GPU capacity and incident response.
  • Test onboarding, offboarding, lost-device recovery and emergency credential replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use SSH or Remote Desktop for remote developers?

Use OpenSSH when developers need a shell, automation or secure file transfer. Use RDP for Windows applications and a graphical desktop. If several users, partners or application-only workloads are involved, evaluate RDS, RemoteApps or virtual desktops instead of sharing one workstation session.

Can Windows Home host incoming Remote Desktop?

No. Windows Home can connect to another computer as an RDP client, but incoming RDP hosting requires Windows Pro, Enterprise, Education or a supported Windows Server edition.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an encrypted SSH or RDP connection secure by itself?

No. Encryption protects traffic in transit, but security also depends on account scope, MFA, device health, network exposure, least privilege, patching, monitoring and timely revocation.

Can Microsoft Entra ID accounts use Windows OpenSSH public-key authentication?

Microsoft documents key authentication for local Windows and Active Directory accounts, not Microsoft Entra ID accounts. Confirm the identity design before choosing SSH keys as the only sign-in method.

Should I expose TCP port 22 or RDP directly to the internet?

Avoid broad internet exposure. Restrict the firewall and route to approved sources or an organization-controlled VPN, gateway or jump host. Every intermediary must be patched, hardened, monitored and protected with strong identity and device checks.

How many developers can share one Windows AI workstation?

The answer depends on the access pattern, concurrent sessions, application compatibility, GPU demand, profile storage, latency and host capacity. A single interactive workstation session is not a multi-user platform; use an appropriate RDS or virtual-desktop model for concurrency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should happen when a developer leaves the project?

Remove group membership, disable or expire the account, revoke application and network grants, remove authorized SSH keys and review logs for the relevant period. Use named accounts and expiry dates so offboarding is verifiable.

Are FIDO2 security keys required?

No. A FIDO2 key is an optional strong authenticator where the organization’s identity provider and policy support it. Enrollment, recovery procedures, device policy and MFA enforcement are still required.

The Bottom Line

Match the protocol to the job, then secure the whole path. Use OpenSSH for narrowly scoped shell work, RDP with NLA for a controlled graphical session, and RDS or virtual desktops for concurrent users or published applications. Keep listeners off the public internet, require named identities, MFA and trusted devices, separate administration from development, and continuously patch, monitor and revoke access.
