If the computer has no VGA output, choose an adapter that converts from the computer’s output to the monitor’s VGA input; HDMI-to-VGA and VGA-to-HDMI are different, directional conversions.
Check the computer and monitor ports first
Look at the ports and labels on both devices, and check their manuals if you are unsure which is an input or output. A computer’s video port is an output; the monitor’s video port is an input. If both devices have matching VGA ports, a direct VGA cable is the simplest connection. Intel recommends using a direct connection when one is available, since adapters can create detection or compatibility problems (Intel’s display adapter guidance).

VGA connectors have rows of pins, so inspect them before connecting. Do not use a cable with bent or damaged pins, and do not force the connector into place. Secure it without putting strain on the cable.

Choose the right connection for your ports
HDMI carries a digital signal, while VGA carries an analog signal. When the ports do not match, the adapter must convert the signal in the correct direction; a simple cable with different plugs does not perform that conversion. Philips explains why VGA and HDMI are not directly compatible (Philips support: VGA and HDMI compatibility).

Check the adapter’s manual for direction, compatibility, supported resolution and refresh rate, power requirements, and audio support. Adapters can be directional, so an HDMI-to-VGA adapter will not necessarily work in reverse. Intel notes that adapters or converters can cause display-detection problems or fail because of bandwidth, compatibility, or hardware limitations (Intel’s display adapter guidance).
Connect and configure the monitor
- Power the monitor. Connect its power cable and switch it on.
- Connect the video cable. Plug the VGA cable into the computer’s VGA output and the monitor’s VGA input. Tighten the connector securely without forcing it. If you are using a converter, connect it according to its manual and make sure its input and output directions match your devices.
- Start the computer. Turn on the computer and allow it to detect the display.
- Select the monitor input. If the picture does not appear, open the monitor’s input menu and select VGA, RGB, or PC, depending on the label. LG advises changing the connection terminal when a connected monitor remains blank (LG monitor blank-screen support).
- Choose a supported display mode. Set a resolution and refresh rate listed in the monitor’s manual. If an adapter is involved, check its specifications too.
Set a resolution and refresh rate the full setup supports
There is no single resolution or refresh-rate setting that applies to every VGA monitor and adapter combination. Check the monitor manual, the computer’s graphics-output documentation, and—if used—the converter’s specifications. A mode must be supported by the relevant devices in the chain.

For example, Cable Matters lists up to 1920×1080 at 60 Hz for its model 113046 adapter; that is a specification for that model, not a universal VGA limit (Cable Matters model 113046 product information). ViewSonic’s IFP70 guide gives VGA modes for that particular display, rather than establishing what another monitor can handle (ViewSonic IFP70 user guide). If the picture is cropped, unstable, or marked unsupported, choose a mode documented for both the display and converter.

Fix a VGA monitor that says “No signal”
Check the basics first, then isolate the cable, input, adapter, and display mode. Power off equipment before reconnecting it if the adapter manual recommends doing so.

- Check power and cable seating. Confirm that the monitor is on and that the VGA connector is fully seated at both ends. LG’s blank-screen guidance also recommends checking the signal connection and selecting the correct input (LG monitor blank-screen support).
- Confirm the selected input. Use the monitor’s menu to choose VGA, RGB, or PC, as available.
- Check the computer’s active video output. Make sure the cable is connected to the output that is actually driving the display. A computer can have more than one video connector, and not every connector is necessarily active in a given setup.
- Inspect the VGA pins and cable. Look for bent pins, debris, or a loose connection. If the image comes and goes when the cable moves, try another cable if available.
- Verify adapter direction and mode support. Confirm that the source and display ends are connected as directed and that the selected resolution and refresh rate are supported by the adapter.
- Test another cable or adapter if possible. Changing one component at a time can help identify whether the problem is the monitor, computer output, cable, or converter.
Some adapter-specific instructions do not apply to every converter. For example, a Cable Matters manual for one adapter model recommends powering down the equipment, adding Micro-USB power if the signal is weak, and reconnecting in sequence. Follow that procedure only if it appears in the manual for your adapter (Cable Matters model 113046 product information).

VGA carries video, not audio. In a VGA-to-HDMI setup, the converter may need a separate audio connection or an audio input of its own to send sound along to an HDMI display. Check the converter and display manuals for the required connections; the port labels alone do not establish whether audio is supported (Philips support: VGA and HDMI compatibility).
