How to Connect a USB Drive to a TV Without a USB Port

You cannot play a USB flash drive through a television’s HDMI socket with a cable or passive adapter. HDMI is an input for an already-generated audio/video signal; it does not read USB storage, decode video files, or supply a media browser. The practical solution is to connect the drive to a separate player that has a USB port and an HDMI output, then connect that player to the TV.

The complete signal path is USB drive → media player USB input → media player HDMI output → TV HDMI input. A compatible Blu-ray player, network media player, computer, or another device whose manual explicitly supports USB playback can fill the player role.

Why a USB-to-HDMI cable does not solve this

A USB flash drive stores data. It does not produce the television signal that HDMI carries. A playback device must perform three jobs before the TV can show anything:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Mount and read the drive’s file system.
  • Recognize the container, video or audio codec, subtitles, and other file data.
  • Decode the media and send a compatible picture and sound signal through HDMI.

A passive USB-A-to-HDMI cable performs none of those jobs. It only changes the physical connector arrangement, and HDMI on a TV is normally an input, not a USB-storage reader. USB display adapters sold for computers are a different category: they generally depend on a host computer, drivers, and software, so they are not standalone flash-drive players.

Adding a USB hub does not help either. A hub can expand the number of USB sockets on a device that already knows how to read USB storage; it cannot give an HDMI-only TV a media-player operating system.

Check the TV before buying anything

Look for a hidden or misidentified USB port

Inspect every side, rear panel, and recessed connector area. Some televisions place USB beside the network socket or behind a small access panel. Read the label next to the socket rather than assuming that every rectangular connector has the same function.

A port marked Service, Update, or 5V may be intended for maintenance or power and may not offer consumer media playback. Open the television’s manual and search for “USB playback,” “media,” or “photos, music and videos.” If the manual describes a USB media menu, use that built-in route instead of HDMI.

Confirm what the HDMI sockets are for

HDMI 1, HDMI 2, ARC, and eARC are still signal inputs on the television. ARC and eARC can return audio to a soundbar or receiver, but they do not turn the TV into a USB host. You need at least one ordinary HDMI input that is free for the external player.

Identify the files you actually need to play

Make a short list of the drive’s contents before choosing a player: video containers and codecs, audio formats, subtitle files, photo types, approximate file sizes, and the drive’s capacity. “Supports video” is not a sufficient specification. A player can accept one type of video while rejecting another file in the same-looking container.

The usual solution: an HDMI media player with USB playback

Look for a device described as an HDMI USB media player or a compatible network or Blu-ray media player. The important specification is not the product category name; it is the exact model’s manual stating that it can browse and play USB storage and output through HDMI.

Older Sony USA documentation identifies compatible Blu-ray Disc and network media players as devices that can access media from USB storage. That establishes the type of device to look for, not the availability or capabilities of any particular current model. Treat the exact model manual as authoritative.

Step-by-step connection

  1. Check the drive. Confirm that it is USB-A, has no encryption requirement, and contains files in formats listed by the player. Copy a small test file first rather than filling the drive before compatibility is known.
  2. Check the player’s USB requirements. Read its limits for file system, partition style, maximum capacity, and power. A device may list FAT32 or NTFS, for example, but that is a model-specific requirement, not a universal rule for all televisions and players.
  3. Connect the player to power. Use the supplied power adapter where one is provided. If the drive is a portable hard disk, follow the player’s instructions about powered hubs or separate drive power; do not assume the USB socket can run every disk.
  4. Connect HDMI. Plug one end of a suitable HDMI cable into the player’s HDMI output and the other into an available HDMI input on the TV. HDMI output and input are directional labels, so do not use the player’s output in reverse.
  5. Turn on the TV and player. Wait for the player’s home screen or setup screen. If the TV reports “No signal,” select the HDMI input that matches the socket used.
  6. Insert the drive into the player’s USB port. Give the player time to scan it. Some interfaces show a USB, Media, Home Media, or File Browser tile; the wording differs by model.
  7. Open the media browser. Choose Video, Music, Photo, or a combined file browser, then select the drive and folder containing the file.
  8. Play a short test file. Confirm picture, audio, aspect ratio, and subtitles before attempting the largest or most important files.
  9. Eject safely. Use the player’s eject or remove command when available, then unplug the drive. Removing storage during a write or scan can corrupt its file system.

Alternative ways to get the drive’s contents onto the TV

Use a computer or laptop as the player

If you have a laptop or desktop with a USB-A port and HDMI output, connect the drive to the computer, open the file with a media application, and connect the computer’s HDMI output to the TV’s HDMI input. Select the matching HDMI source on the TV and set the computer to duplicate or extend its display as needed.

This route avoids the television’s media-format limitations because the computer performs the decoding. It does require the computer to remain connected and powered, and the computer’s HDMI output, operating system, and media software must support the desired picture and sound settings. It is often the quickest diagnostic: if the file plays on the computer but not on a dedicated player, the problem is likely player compatibility rather than the drive itself.

Use a compatible Blu-ray or network media player

Some Blu-ray Disc and network media players include USB playback. Sony’s support documentation describes this capability but also warns that not every file is guaranteed to play. Check the exact player’s supported-format list, USB limits, and HDMI output before purchasing. A network feature does not by itself prove that local USB playback is supported.

Use another device only when its manual explicitly promises USB playback

Streaming boxes, game consoles, receivers, and set-top devices differ widely. A USB socket may be reserved for service, charging, recording, or software updates. Do not buy a device solely because it has a USB connector; look for explicit instructions for browsing and playing files from USB storage.

Drive formatting, capacity, and file compatibility

File systems are model-specific

LG USA’s support guidance for its described TV workflow gives FAT32 and NTFS as supported examples and notes that storage capacity and drive power can affect operation. Those instructions apply to the models and workflow covered by that guidance; they are not a universal requirement for every TV or external player. Another device may support a different file system, impose a smaller capacity limit, or recognize only a particular partition arrangement.

Before reformatting, copy the drive’s contents elsewhere. Formatting erases the existing files. If the player refuses a drive, check its documented file-system and partition requirements first rather than repeatedly changing formats at random.

File extensions do not guarantee playback

A filename ending in a familiar extension describes a container, not every stream inside it. Two files with the same extension can use different video codecs, audio codecs, subtitle formats, bit rates, or profiles. Sony’s support wording is explicit: “Not all files are guaranteed to play.” Use the player’s complete supported-format table and test the actual files you plan to watch.

Large drives and power-hungry disks can fail differently

A drive that exceeds a player’s capacity limit may not appear at all. A portable hard disk that needs more power than the USB socket supplies may disconnect, spin up repeatedly, or vanish during scanning. A flash drive usually has lower power demands, but the player’s manual still controls what is supported.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely cause What to try
“No signal” on the TV Wrong HDMI input, loose cable, player not powered, or incompatible output mode. Select the numbered HDMI input used, reseat both ends, restart the player, and check its HDMI-output settings against the TV manual.
The player does not show the drive Unsupported file system or partition, excessive capacity, insufficient power, damaged connector, or a service-only USB port. Test another small flash drive, verify the model’s USB limits, try the player’s other USB port if documented, and supply approved external power for a hard disk.
The drive appears but one file will not play Unsupported codec, profile, audio stream, subtitle type, damaged file, or digital-rights restriction. Test a different file, inspect the player’s codec table, and convert the file on a computer only if you are legally permitted to do so.
Video plays without sound The video codec is supported but its audio codec is not, or the player/TV audio output is misconfigured. Try another file with a simpler audio track and review the player’s audio-output setting and the TV’s volume/source selection.
Playback stutters or stops Drive connection, power instability, damaged data, or a bitrate beyond the player’s documented capability. Copy the file to another drive, avoid an unpowered hub, test a shorter clip, and compare the file’s properties with the player’s limits.
Subtitles are missing Subtitle format, filename relationship, language encoding, or styling is unsupported. Check the manual’s subtitle rules and test a file whose subtitle format and naming convention are explicitly supported.
Only some folders are visible The browser filters by media type, or the player cannot index a particular file or folder structure. Switch between Video, Music, Photo, and All Files views and test a file in a simple folder at the drive’s root.

What not to buy or assume

  • Do not buy a passive USB-to-HDMI lead. It has no processor or media interface to decode files.
  • Do not assume every HDMI socket works as an output. On a TV, HDMI is generally an input; the external player must provide the output.
  • Do not treat a USB charging or service socket as a media port. The manual must describe playback.
  • Do not generalize one brand’s file-system advice. FAT32 and NTFS may be valid for one manufacturer’s documented workflow while another device has different limits.
  • Do not infer guaranteed playback from an extension. Container, codec, audio, subtitle, resolution, and bit-rate support all matter.
  • Do not ignore power specifications. A drive can be healthy and readable by a computer yet fail on a player that cannot supply enough USB power.

A practical buying checklist

Before ordering an external player, write down the TV model, the free HDMI input, the drive type and capacity, and the files you need to play. Then confirm each item below in the exact player’s documentation:

  • USB-A host port for the drive.
  • Explicit USB media playback, not merely USB charging, recording, or updates.
  • Supported file systems and partition limits.
  • Maximum drive capacity and any per-file size limit.
  • Video containers, codecs, profiles, resolutions, frame rates, and audio codecs required by your files.
  • Subtitle and photo formats, if needed.
  • HDMI output compatible with the TV’s available input.
  • Power support for the selected drive.
  • Any setup or network requirement that affects local playback.

Bottom line for an HDMI-only television

The TV cannot read a USB drive through HDMI by itself. Use a playback device that accepts the drive over USB, decodes the files, and sends the result to the TV over HDMI. A computer, compatible Blu-ray player, network media player, or dedicated HDMI USB media player can work, but only when its exact manual confirms the drive, file system, codecs, capacity, power, and HDMI output you need. Compatibility is device- and file-specific, so test a representative file before relying on the setup for an entire collection.
