How to Connect a TV to Stereo Speakers: HDMI ARC, Optical, or Analog

Match an audio output on your TV to a compatible input on your stereo. Use HDMI ARC if both devices have ARC-labeled HDMI ports, optical if both have optical audio ports, or analog if the TV and stereo have matching analog connections. Then select the external audio system in the TV’s sound settings and the corresponding input on the stereo. Port labels and menu names vary by model.

Choose the connection your TV and stereo both support

Connection What must be on both devices What to check
HDMI ARC An ARC-capable HDMI port on the TV and an ARC-capable HDMI port on the stereo or receiver Use the labeled ports; enable HDMI control/CEC if needed
Optical TV optical digital audio output and stereo optical input Confirm the stereo supports the audio format being sent
Analog TV analog audio output and compatible stereo analog input Match the connector type and choose the correct stereo input

These methods offer different connection paths, but the available guidance does not establish a universal sound-quality ranking. The best choice is the one supported by both devices and their settings.

Connect with HDMI ARC

ARC means Audio Return Channel. It lets TV audio travel to an audio system through an HDMI connection. Sony says ARC uses a single High Speed HDMI cable between the TV and audio system, avoiding a separate optical or composite-audio cable. ARC is a feature of specific ports, not every HDMI port.

  1. Check the TV and stereo manuals or port labels to confirm that both support ARC.
  2. Connect a High Speed HDMI cable from the TV’s HDMI ARC port to the stereo’s HDMI OUT (ARC) port. If a port is labeled eARC/ARC, check the manuals for compatibility with the other device.
  3. Enable HDMI control or CEC on the devices if required. The setting name varies by manufacturer.
  4. In the TV sound settings, select the external audio system or receiver as the output. On the stereo, select its TV audio input.

ARC may also support device control, depending on the equipment and settings. For port and troubleshooting guidance, see Sony’s explanation of the Audio Return Channel (ARC).

Connect with an optical audio cable

Optical carries digital audio from the TV to a compatible optical input on the stereo. Look for a TV port labeled OPTICAL DIGITAL AUDIO OUT and a matching OPTICAL IN or DIGITAL IN (TV) on the stereo.

  1. Connect the TV’s optical output to the stereo’s optical input with an optical digital audio cable.
  2. Set the TV’s sound output to optical or external audio if the connection does not switch automatically.
  3. Select the optical input on the stereo.

If there is no sound, the stereo may not support the audio format the TV is sending. Try PCM in the TV’s digital audio output settings if available; Sony recommends it as a troubleshooting option when a system does not support the sent Dolby Digital or DTS format. The available setting and menu path depend on the TV model. See Sony’s guide to connecting a TV and audio system.

HDMI Audio Extractor 4K eARC ARC 4K@60Hz Optical SPDIF RCA Converter
  • 【4K HDMI Audio Converter】This hdmi audio extractor supports extracting audio from HDMI sources to HDMI monitors, optical 5.1CH devices, L/R stereo audio or 3.5mm AUX audio devices. It supports use by connecting only the optical audio output, L/R stereo audio out or the 3.5mm stereo audio output without connecting the display. A Type-C 5V cable must be connected to provide power for proper operation(Note: Do not connect a TV as a signal source directly to the HDMI IN port or it will not work)
  • 【HDMI ARC Audio Extractor】In ARC mode(Backward compatible with ARC), connect your TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port to the “HDMI OUT” port to send audio to external speakers. (Tips: Enable CEC on your TV, set the DIP switch to “TV” mode, and use an HDMI cable with ARC/eARC support.)
  • 【Triple Operating Modes】1. PASS Mode: Automatically mirrors your TV’s native audio. Optical output supports all multi-channel formats.(Note: Analog R/L & AUX ports support 2.0 PCM only; non-PCM inputs will cause digital buzz/noise); 2. R/L Mode: Universally downmixes all formats (PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD) into standard 2.0 PCM. Delivers synchronized stereo sound across R/L, AUX, and Optical ports simultaneously; 3. SPDIF Mode: Dedicated multi-channel surround sound mode. Optical output supports all premium bitstream audio formats. (Note: Analog ports require PCM input to function; other formats will result in a static hum).
  • 【4K@60Hz High Resolution】Supports up to 4K@60Hz with 24-bit, 30-bit, and 36-bit color. Backward compatible with 4K@60Hz 4K@30Hz, 2K@120Hz, and 1080P. Please make sure your source, monitor, HDMI cable all support 4K60Hz resolution in order to finally achieve the highest 4K60Hz resolution

Connect with analog audio

Analog works when the TV has an audio output—such as red-and-white stereo RCA jacks or a stereo-mini/headphone jack—and the stereo has a compatible analog input. Not every TV has an analog audio output, so check its ports or manual before buying a cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the TV’s analog audio output and a compatible stereo input, such as AUX or LINE IN.
  2. Use a cable with matching connectors at both ends. RCA audio uses red and white plugs; a stereo-mini connection uses a small headphone-style plug. Do not use the yellow composite-video plug as an audio connection.
  3. Set the TV output to the external or headphone output if necessary, then select the matching analog input on the stereo.

A TV headphone output may have variable volume. Start at a low level and raise it gradually; check the TV manual for how that output behaves.

What if the ports do not match?

A cable alone cannot convert one signal type into another. For example, a TV’s optical digital output cannot connect directly to an analog RCA input with a passive cable. That combination may require an active digital-to-analog converter (DAC) designed for optical input and RCA output. Check the converter’s supported audio formats and the TV’s output settings before connecting it.

Troubleshoot no sound

  • For ARC: Confirm both devices support ARC, the cable uses the ARC-labeled ports, HDMI control/CEC is enabled if required, the TV output is set to the external system, and the receiver is on its TV input.
  • For optical: Confirm the cable connects the TV’s optical output to the stereo’s optical input, both devices are set to those sources, and the stereo supports the format being sent. Try PCM on the TV if format compatibility is in doubt.
  • For analog: Check that the TV connection is an audio output, not a video-only jack; confirm the cable matches both jacks; and select the corresponding stereo input.
  • For any connection: Reconnect the cable and check it for damage. If the TV does not recognize an ARC audio system, Sony also recommends reconnecting the devices and checking the HDMI cable.

Exact menu names and available settings depend on the TV and stereo. Consult each model’s manual for the precise sound-output and input-selection steps. See Sony’s ARC guidance and Samsung India’s guide to external TV audio connections.
