To connect a TV to a soundbar, match the TV’s audio output to the soundbar’s audio input: connect Optical OUT to Optical IN for a digital connection, or connect the TV’s analog audio out to the soundbar’s analog input with the cable that fits both devices. Then select the matching soundbar input and, where available, set the TV to send sound to an external audio system.

Check your TV and soundbar ports first

Look at the rear or side panels of both devices and confirm the direction of each port. You need an audio output on the TV and a compatible audio input on the soundbar; an output-to-output or input-to-input connection will not work. Check the device manuals if the labels are unclear or the ports differ from the examples below.

Sony’s connection guide prioritizes HDMI ARC when both devices support it, then optical when matching optical ports are available, and analog when compatible analog connections are the option available. If you specifically want to use optical or RCA, verify the required port pair before choosing a cable. Sony’s connection-method guide explains the port-based choice.

Connect the TV and soundbar with an optical cable

  1. Find the TV port labeled Optical Digital Audio Out, Digital Audio Out (Optical), or similar, and the soundbar port labeled Optical In. Confirm one is an output and the other is an input.
  2. Connect an optical audio cable from the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input.
  3. Turn on both devices and use the soundbar’s remote or controls to select TV, Optical, or the equivalent input name.
  4. Open the TV’s sound or audio-output settings and select an external audio system if that option is available. If the TV offers a digital audio output format setting and the soundbar produces no sound, try PCM.

Menu names and available settings vary by TV model and software version. For example, Sony’s troubleshooting instructions include selecting an audio system and setting Digital Audio Out to PCM, but the exact path differs by model. See Sony’s optical sound troubleshooting guidance or your device manual for the relevant controls.

Connect the TV and soundbar with analog RCA

  1. Check that the TV has an audio output and the soundbar has an analog audio input. Red-and-white RCA jacks are one common arrangement, but some TVs use a stereo-mini headphone-style output instead.
  2. Choose a cable that matches the ports on both devices. Use RCA-to-RCA only when both have matching RCA audio connections; if one has a stereo-mini output and the other RCA inputs, use the stereo-mini-to-RCA arrangement specified for the devices.
  3. Connect the TV’s audio output to the soundbar’s analog input. Do not connect to a TV input or a soundbar output.
  4. Set the soundbar source to Analog or AUX. If the TV has an audio-output selection setting, choose the relevant output or external audio system.

RCA and stereo-mini connections are analog, and available ports and settings depend on the specific models. Sony’s TV-to-soundbar connection instructions and sound bar connection overview describe these connection types; consult your own device manuals where the ports or labels differ.

Optical or RCA: what changes?

Connection Signal and port requirement Important consideration
Optical Digital audio; TV optical output to soundbar optical input. Sony says that with optical-only wiring, HDMI-dependent functions such as power interlock and TV-remote volume control will not be available. If those controls matter, check whether both devices support HDMI ARC/eARC.
RCA or stereo-mini-to-RCA Analog stereo audio; use the TV’s analog audio output and a matching soundbar analog input, with a cable suited to the ports. Not every TV has an analog audio output, and not every soundbar has an analog input.

These distinctions describe the connection options documented by Sony; the ports and features on your equipment can vary. See Sony’s connection guidance before relying on a model-specific control feature.

If there is no sound

  • Check the connection: Make sure the cable is fully seated, undamaged, and runs from the TV’s audio output to the soundbar’s corresponding input.
  • Check the soundbar source and volume: Select TV/Optical for an optical cable or Analog/AUX for an analog cable. Confirm neither device is muted and raise the volume on both.
  • Check the TV output: In the TV’s sound settings, choose Audio System, external speakers, or the closest available equivalent if the option exists.
  • For optical, try PCM: If the TV provides a digital-output format setting, select PCM and test again.
  • Restart and consult the manuals: If the checks do not restore sound, restart both devices and follow their model-specific instructions. Sony also recommends checking for device updates in its troubleshooting guidance.

For Sony models, the soundbar troubleshooting page covers cable, output-selection, PCM, reset, and update checks. Other manufacturers may use different menu labels or procedures.
