Stealth 600 Gen 2 for PlayStation uses a USB mini-transmitter; the original Stealth 700 can use optical plus USB on an original PS4 or PS4 Pro, but uses USB only on PS4 Slim; and Recon 200 Gen 2 plugs into the controller. After connecting the hardware, PS4 audio settings must point to the right input and output device, and the microphone needs its own level check.
Use the model-specific instructions below rather than treating every Turtle Beach headset as interchangeable. The PS4 Slim has no optical output, while the original PS4 and PS4 Pro do, so an optical setup that works on one console may be impossible on another.

Identify your Turtle Beach model and PS4 first
Look at the label on the headset, transmitter, packaging or quick-start card. “Stealth 600,” “Stealth 700,” and “Recon 200” describe different connection systems, and generations can change the steps. The PlayStation version also matters: a similarly named Xbox headset may not use the same transmitter or console settings.

Know which PS4 has an optical output
| Console | Optical output | What that means for the original Stealth 700 |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS4, released in 2013 | Yes | Can follow the optical-plus-USB setup. |
| PS4 Slim, released in September 2016 | No | Use the USB-only instructions; optical-dependent features and controls may differ. |
| PS4 Pro | Yes | Can follow the optical-plus-USB setup. |
Turtle Beach documents these console differences in its Stealth 700 feature-set comparison. Do not force an optical cable into a Slim or assume that the Slim offers the same independent game/chat behavior as an optical installation.
Connect a Stealth 600 Gen 2 for PlayStation
The Stealth 600 Gen 2 uses a small USB transmitter. The headset and transmitter are paired out of the box, so normal setup does not require a manual pairing operation.
- Turn on the PS4 and plug the headset’s mini-transmitter into an available USB port on the console.
- Power on the headset. Keep it close to the transmitter while it starts.
- On the PS4 home screen, open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
- Set Input Device to Stealth 600 Gen 2.
- Set Output Device to Stealth 600 Gen 2.
- Set Output to Headphones to All Audio so game sound, chat and other PS4 audio are sent to the headset.
- Use the headphone-volume control, then choose Adjust Microphone Level and speak at your normal volume. Move the level until your voice is clear without constantly hitting the upper end of the meter.
The exact labels and sequence are shown in Turtle Beach’s Stealth 600 Gen 2 quick-start guide. A transmitter that double-blinks is not yet showing a completed wireless link. Connect it to the PS4, power on the headset and wait for the transmitter and headset indicators to become solid, as described in the Stealth 600 Gen 2 pairing procedure.

If the Stealth 600 does not pair
- Turn the headset off.
- Leave the transmitter connected directly to the PS4 rather than to an unpowered hub.
- Power the headset back on and observe the transmitter. Double-blinking means it is still searching; solid indicators mean pairing has completed.
- Once the indicators are solid, return to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices and reselect the Stealth 600 for both input and output.
If the headset connects but the microphone remains silent, open Adjust Microphone Level and watch the meter while speaking. A moving meter confirms that PS4 is receiving the microphone; no movement points to the input selection, mute state or a pairing/power problem.
Set up the original Stealth 700 on an original PS4 or PS4 Pro
On an original PS4 or PS4 Pro, the original Stealth 700 guide uses both the console’s optical output and a USB connection. The optical path carries the game audio format while USB handles the headset’s console connection and chat functions.
- Connect the headset’s USB cable or USB transmitter as specified by the headset guide.
- Connect an optical cable from the PS4’s DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) port to the headset base or optical input used by your Stealth 700 setup.
- Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices and choose the Turtle Beach USB headset for both Input Device and Output Device.
- Set Output to Headphones to Chat Audio, matching the optical configuration in Turtle Beach’s instructions.
- Return to the console’s audio-output settings and set Primary Output Port to Digital Out (OPTICAL).
- When the optical format choices appear, select Only Dolby Digital 5.1 ch. Do not select DTS 5.1ch for this setup.
- Set Audio Format (Priority) to Bitstream (Dolby).
- Set the headphone volume and use Adjust Microphone Level to make sure your voice reaches the desired level.
The complete menu path and format choices are in Turtle Beach’s Stealth 700 for PS4/PS4 Pro quick-start guide. The optical instructions only apply when the console actually has an optical port.

Set up the original Stealth 700 on a PS4 Slim
The PS4 Slim has no digital optical output. For that console, the original Stealth 700 instructions use USB only.
- Connect the Stealth 700’s USB connection to the PS4 Slim.
- Power on the headset.
- Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
- Select the Turtle Beach USB headset as both Input Device and Output Device.
- Set Output to Headphones to All Audio.
- Set the headphone volume and run Adjust Microphone Level.
This USB-only arrangement is not identical to the optical installation. Turtle Beach’s feature comparison notes differences such as independent game/chat controls between the console paths. Therefore, a Slim can connect the headset, but you should not promise that every feature behaves exactly as it does on an original PS4 or Pro. See the official feature-set explanation before changing consoles or buying an adapter.
Using a television’s optical output with a Slim
A television can sometimes provide an optical workaround for a Slim, but it is conditional. The TV must have an optical output and audio settings that pass a compatible signal. Television models differ, so Turtle Beach does not treat this as a universal solution. Its TV optical instructions explain the requirements and limitations.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Turtle Beach also describes an HD Audio Converter route for setups that specifically need optical audio. That converter cannot pass 4K, 3D or HDR video, so it is unsuitable if your video chain depends on any of those formats. Treat it as a conditional accessory, not a requirement for every PS4 Slim owner.
Connect a Recon 200 Gen 2 through the controller
The Recon 200 Gen 2 PlayStation setup is wired: the headset connects to the DualShock 4 controller, and the PS4 routes sound and chat through that controller connection.

Understand the PS4 audio settings
Input Device
Input Device determines which microphone the console uses. Select the named Turtle Beach USB device for wireless models, or Controller Headset for a wired controller connection. Selecting the wrong input can leave game audio working while party chat cannot hear you.
Output Device
Output Device determines where PS4 audio is sent. A wireless headset normally appears by its model name. A wired headset connected to the controller appears as Controller Headset. If the console has reverted to TV or another device, change this setting before troubleshooting the headset itself.
Output to Headphones
All Audio routes game sound and chat to the headset and is used by the cited USB-only Stealth 600 and Stealth 700 Slim setups. Chat Audio routes chat to the headset while the optical path handles the other audio in the original Stealth 700 configuration. Choose the option that matches your model’s connection guide; the labels are not interchangeable recommendations.
Adjust Microphone Level
The microphone-level screen is a diagnostic as well as a volume control. Speak normally and watch the input bar. If it moves, the PS4 has detected the microphone and you can refine the level. If it stays still, check mute controls, the selected input device, cable or transmitter connection, and headset power before raising the level.
Troubleshoot in the order the failure occurs
No wireless connection or a blinking transmitter
- Confirm that the correct PlayStation transmitter is connected directly to a working PS4 USB port.
- Power on the headset after connecting the transmitter.
- For Stealth 600 Gen 2, double-blinking indicates that pairing has not completed. Follow the pairing procedure and wait for solid indicators.
- Move the headset close to the transmitter during pairing and remove unnecessary USB devices temporarily if the console is not detecting it.
The headset appears, but there is no game audio
- Open the audio-device menu and verify both Input Device and Output Device.
- Check Output to Headphones. All Audio is required for the cited USB-only configurations; Chat Audio belongs to the original Stealth 700 optical setup.
- Raise the headset’s physical volume control and the PS4 headphone volume.
- If you are using an original Stealth 700, verify the optical cable is in the console’s optical port and that Primary Output Port is Digital Out (OPTICAL).
Friends cannot hear the microphone
- Confirm that the input device is the Turtle Beach USB headset or Controller Headset, depending on the model.
- Open Adjust Microphone Level and speak. A stationary meter means the console is not receiving the mic signal.
- Check the headset’s mute position and, for a wired model, reseat the 3.5 mm plug at both ends.
- For Stealth 600 Gen 2, power-cycle the headset and transmitter, then repeat the pairing check if the microphone still does not register. Turtle Beach includes this type of power-cycle troubleshooting in its pairing guidance.
Optical settings or features do not match the instructions
Identify the console again. A Slim lacks the optical port, so an original-PS4 optical procedure cannot work as written. On a Slim, use the USB-only Stealth 700 path or a television/converter arrangement only if the TV and video requirements are acceptable. On an original PS4 or Pro, check that Dolby Digital 5.1 only, not DTS 5.1ch, is selected for the cited optical setup.
Choose the connection path that fits your setup
| Priority | Most suitable documented path | Trade-off to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless use with a simple USB installation | Stealth 600 Gen 2 for PlayStation | Requires its USB transmitter and correct pairing. |
| Optical audio on an original PS4 or PS4 Pro | Original Stealth 700 optical plus USB | More cables and several audio-format settings; the path is unavailable on Slim. |
| Wireless use on PS4 Slim | Original Stealth 700 USB-only setup | Feature behavior, including independent game/chat controls, can differ from optical operation. |
| Lowest connection complexity and no wireless pairing | Recon 200 Gen 2 through the controller | The cable must remain connected to the DualShock 4. |
Before purchasing a replacement or accessory, confirm the exact model name, PlayStation variant and PS4 revision. Turtle Beach’s older compatibility guidance also warns that headset behavior can vary among the slimmer 2016 PS4, the original console and PS4 Pro; its compatibility note is useful when an older headset is involved.
