To connect a turntable, make sure its signal passes through exactly one phono stage before reaching a line-level input. A phono stage may be built into the turntable, the speakers or amplifier, or a separate phono preamp. Match the turntable’s output setting to the destination input: use LINE with LINE/AUX, or PHONO with PHONO (or an external phono preamp).
First, check where the phono stage is
A turntable cartridge outputs a low-level PHONO signal. A phono stage boosts that signal and applies equalization so ordinary LINE/AUX inputs can use it. Before connecting anything, check the turntable and destination-device manuals for a switch or label such as PHONO/LINE or PHONO EQ, and for an input marked PHONO.

- If the turntable’s built-in phono stage is enabled, its RCA outputs are at LINE level. Connect them to a LINE, AUX, or other suitable analog input—not PHONO.
- If the turntable is set to PHONO or has no built-in phono stage, it needs a PHONO input or an external phono preamp before a LINE/AUX input.
- Use one phono stage in the signal path. A second stage can make the sound excessively loud or distorted.
Switch behavior and input labels differ by model, so verify both ends in their manuals. Edifier’s guidance for the R1280DB/DBs and Klipsch’s instructions for The Sevens II illustrate different supported connection paths: Edifier support and Klipsch support.

Connect a turntable to powered speakers
Powered speakers contain their own power amplifiers, so they do not need a separate stereo power amplifier. They still need the turntable signal at the right level. Check whether the speakers have a PHONO input; many have only LINE/AUX or other analog inputs.
#1 Best Overall
- Converts phono signals: a turntable preamp that converts phono signals to line level signals. This state-of-the-art circuitry phono preamp can accommodate magnetic pickups with an input sensitivity of 3mV at 50K ohms
- Low noise operation: offers outstanding performance with it’s low-noise Audio operational amplifiers. The output is 2V max (p-p) at 10K ohms. It’s better to position the preamp close to the source to reduce unwanted noise and interference
- Connects to turntables: connect any Turntable to modern sound equipment without specialized phono input for amplifying music. For the receiver, This can be connected to speakers, computers, laptops and more
- Simple plug & play: This mini preamp has stereo RCA inputs and stereo RCA outputs. Connect the Turntable to the RCA inputs and ground. Then, connect the amplifier Receiver to the RCA outputs
Turntable has a built-in phono stage
- Set the turntable’s switch to LINE, or enable its phono equalizer, as directed by its manual.
- Connect the turntable’s left and right RCA outputs to the speakers’ analog LINE/AUX input.
- Select that input on the speakers, then adjust the volume.
Edifier says a direct RCA connection to the R1280DB/DBs requires a turntable with a built-in preamp. Klipsch likewise directs users with a turntable preamp to an analog input rather than the PHONO input.
Speakers have a PHONO input, but the turntable does not have a phono stage
- Connect the turntable’s RCA outputs to the speakers’ PHONO input.
- If the turntable has a PHONO/LINE switch, set it to PHONO.
- If the manuals call for grounding and the speakers provide a ground terminal, connect the turntable’s ground lead to that terminal.
Klipsch describes this route for The Sevens II. Follow the instructions for your specific speaker and turntable.

Neither device has a phono stage
- Connect the turntable’s RCA outputs to the input of an external phono preamp. Set the turntable to PHONO if it has an output switch.
- Connect the preamp’s LINE output to the speakers’ LINE/AUX or analog input.
- Connect the ground lead to the preamp’s GND terminal if the equipment manuals specify it.
Connect a turntable to an amplifier or receiver
Amplifier has a PHONO input
- Connect the turntable’s RCA outputs to the amplifier’s PHONO input. The turntable must send a raw PHONO signal; set its switch to PHONO or bypass its built-in stage as the manual directs.
- Connect the turntable’s ground lead to the amplifier’s GND terminal if provided and specified by the manuals.
- Connect passive speakers to the amplifier’s speaker outputs using the connection method specified for that equipment.
Turntable’s built-in phono stage is enabled
Connect its LINE-level output to an amplifier LINE/AUX input, not PHONO. The amplifier’s PHONO input expects the lower-level signal from a turntable without an active phono stage.

Place an external phono preamp between the turntable and amplifier: connect the turntable to the preamp’s input, then connect the preamp’s LINE output to an amplifier LINE/AUX input. Connect the ground lead to a compatible GND terminal when the manuals call for it.

Connect a turntable to wired headphones
Use an amplifier or receiver with a headphone output if available. If there is no headphone output, a headphone amplifier can provide one, but its line input must receive a correctly leveled signal.
- Turntable has a built-in phono stage: send its LINE-level output to a suitable line input on the headphone-capable amplifier or headphone amplifier.
- Turntable has no built-in phono stage: add a phono preamp before the headphone amplifier’s line input, unless the device feeding the headphones has a PHONO input.
Check the input types and turntable output mode against both manuals. The TEAC TN-3B manual describes its built-in equalizer output feeding amplifier line inputs and warns that routing this output to PHONO with the equalizer on can make speaker and headphone output excessively loud. In practical terms, do not send LINE-level output into a PHONO input: that is a signal-level mismatch. See the TEAC TN-3B manual.

Fix hum, very low volume, or distortion
Sound is very quiet or thin
Check whether the turntable is sending a raw PHONO signal into a LINE/AUX input. If so, the signal is missing a phono stage. Use a PHONO input or add an external phono preamp before the LINE/AUX input.

Sound is unusually loud or distorted
Check whether the turntable’s built-in phono stage is active while its output is connected to a PHONO input. That setup can put two phono stages in the signal path. Use the turntable’s LINE output with a LINE/AUX input, or its PHONO output with a PHONO input or external phono preamp.

There is hum
When the manuals call for it, connect the turntable ground lead to the matching GND terminal on the phono preamp, amplifier, or PHONO-equipped powered speaker. Grounding can help with hum, but layouts vary; use a terminal intended for the turntable ground lead.
