How to Connect a Turntable to Powered Speakers, a Receiver, or a Phono Preamp

The correct connection depends on the turntable’s output and the input you are feeding. A PHONO output needs a receiver’s PHONO input or an external phono preamp. A LINE output—provided by a turntable with its phono preamp enabled—connects to AUX/LINE or compatible powered speakers. Never connect PHONO directly to a line-level input and never send LINE into PHONO.

Start with the signal path

A record cartridge produces a very small, equalized signal. A phono preamp boosts it to ordinary line level and applies the required inverse equalization. Your equipment may perform that job inside the turntable, inside a receiver, or in a separate box. The labels on the turntable and receiving equipment determine the wiring.

Turntable output Receiving input Correct path
PHONO only Receiver PHONO Turntable RCA leads to PHONO L/R; connect the ground lead when both units provide terminals.
PHONO only Receiver AUX/LINE or another stereo input Turntable to an external phono preamp; preamp line output to AUX/LINE.
LINE (built-in preamp enabled) Receiver AUX/LINE Turntable RCA leads to the selected line input; do not use PHONO.
LINE (built-in preamp enabled) Powered speakers with a compatible analog input Turntable directly to the speakers, using the speakers’ volume control or another level control.
Either output Passive speakers alone Not a direct connection. Use a receiver or amplifier that can power the speakers and provides the appropriate phono path.

Audio-Technica’s AT-LP3XBT User Manual illustrates the built-in-equalizer arrangement for that specific model. Sony’s general guidance explains that a turntable without a suitable PHONO input needs a built-in or in-line amplifier before another stereo input (Sony support, last modified December 20, 2020). Your model’s labels and manual take priority because switch names and terminals vary.

Identify your turntable’s output

Look for a PHONO/LINE switch

Many turntables with an integrated preamp have a rear-panel switch labelled PHONO and LINE. Choose PHONO when an external receiver PHONO stage will do the amplification and equalization. Choose LINE when the destination is AUX, LINE, CD, an analog speaker input, or another input that expects ordinary line level. The turntable must be set before you raise the volume.

Check the labels when there is no switch

A turntable labelled only PHONO, or one whose manual says it requires a phono amplifier, supplies cartridge-level output. It cannot drive a normal AUX input at a useful level by itself. A model labelled LINE OUT, or one that documents a built-in phono equalizer, can provide line-level output when its preamp is enabled. Do not infer the output solely from the presence of RCA sockets: both PHONO and LINE commonly use left/right RCA connections.

Inspect the ground lead

A separate thin ground wire, often ending in a fork or ring terminal, is normally used with a receiver or phono preamp that has a matching ground post. It is not the same as the left/right audio cable. Grounding arrangements differ, so follow the turntable manual. Audio-Technica identifies grounding as a way to reduce low hum on the documented AT-LP3XBT setup.

Connect a PHONO turntable to a receiver with PHONO

This is the simplest traditional stereo arrangement: the receiver supplies the phono stage and powers passive speakers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn off the receiver and turntable, or turn the receiver volume fully down before inserting plugs.
  2. Find the receiver inputs marked PHONO L and PHONO R. Do not use AUX, CD, TAPE, or another line input for this path.
  3. Connect the turntable’s white RCA plug to PHONO L and red RCA plug to PHONO R. Push each plug fully home.
  4. If both units have ground terminals, loosen the receiver’s ground post, place the turntable ground lead under it, and tighten it. Keep the lead away from moving parts.
  5. Set the receiver to PHONO, start playback, and increase volume gradually.

Audio-Technica documents this PHONO setting and ground connection for the AT-LP3XBT; the exact switch and terminal position on another model may differ. If the receiver has a PHONO input but the turntable is set to LINE, the signal can become excessively loud or distorted because phono processing is applied twice.

Connect a LINE turntable to a receiver without PHONO

Use this route when the turntable contains a phono preamp and the receiver offers only line-level inputs.

  1. Set the turntable’s preamp selector to LINE, or enable its built-in EQ/preamp as described in that model’s manual.
  2. Connect the turntable’s left/right RCA leads to the receiver’s AUX, LINE, CD, or another documented line-level stereo input.
  3. Select that same input on the receiver.
  4. Begin playback with the receiver volume low, then raise it slowly.

Do not select PHONO on the receiver for this connection. A LINE signal already has the gain and equalization that a PHONO input is designed to add, so using PHONO can produce loud, harsh, or clipped audio.

Connect a PHONO-only turntable through an external phono preamp

An external phono preamp is required when the turntable supplies only PHONO output and the receiver has no PHONO input. It is also the normal solution when powered speakers accept only line-level analog input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Power down or mute the equipment.
  2. Connect the turntable’s left/right RCA outputs to the preamp’s PHONO IN left/right sockets.
  3. Connect the turntable ground lead to the preamp’s ground terminal if both provide one.
  4. Connect the preamp’s LINE OUT left/right sockets to the receiver’s AUX/LINE input or the powered speakers’ analog input.
  5. Set the receiver or speakers to the input used, power the system, and increase volume gradually.

The signal chain is therefore cartridge → turntable PHONO output → external phono preamp → line input → receiver or powered-speaker amplifier. Plugging a PHONO output directly into AUX leaves the signal far too quiet and improperly equalized; Sony describes an amplifier or in-line amplifier as necessary when PHONO is unavailable.

Connect a turntable directly to powered speakers

Powered (active) speakers contain their own power amplifier, so a turntable can feed them directly only when the turntable provides line-level output and the speaker has a compatible analog input.

When the turntable has a built-in preamp

  1. Set the turntable to LINE or enable its built-in phono equalizer.
  2. Identify the speaker input: common possibilities include RCA left/right, a 3.5 mm stereo input, or another analog connector specified in the speaker manual.
  3. Use the included RCA lead if it matches. If the speaker uses a different connector, obtain the appropriate passive conversion cable; confirm the wiring rather than assuming every adapter carries stereo audio.
  4. Connect left to left and right to right, power the speakers, start playback, and adjust the speakers’ volume control.

The AT-LP3XBT manual states that its built-in phono equalizer permits connection to active speakers without a separate phono amplifier. That statement is model-specific; verify the same feature on your own turntable.

When the turntable has PHONO output only

Do not connect it directly to the speakers. Insert an external phono preamp between the turntable and speakers: turntable PHONO to preamp PHONO IN, preamp LINE OUT to the speakers’ analog input. The speakers must also provide a volume control or another way to set listening level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the speakers are passive

Passive speakers have no built-in power amplifier. A turntable cannot power them, regardless of whether its output is PHONO or LINE. Use a receiver or separate amplifier between the source and the speakers; the receiver or amplifier must also provide either a PHONO input or a line input fed by a phono preamp.

RCA plugs, channel order, and grounding

Match left and right

Use the white RCA plug for the left channel and the red plug for the right channel, matching the labels on both devices. A partially inserted plug can mute a channel or create intermittent sound. If only one speaker plays, reseat both plugs at every connection point before changing settings.

Use the correct ground point

Connect the dedicated ground lead only to a ground terminal intended for it. If both devices provide terminals, the connection commonly reduces low-frequency hum. If hum remains, check that every RCA plug is fully seated and that power cables and signal cables are not tightly bundled together.

Audio-Technica’s AT-LP3XBT instructions note a model-specific exception: if hum persists, removing that model’s ground line may reduce it. Treat that as a troubleshooting step for the documented model, not a universal rule. On another turntable, removing the ground can increase hum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the supplied cable before buying an adapter

Some active speakers accept RCA directly; others require a stereo mini-jack or a proprietary analog input. Check the actual speaker sockets and the cable included with the turntable. A conversion cable is needed only when the connectors do not match; it does not replace a phono preamp.

Diagnose low volume, distortion, hum, and missing channels

Symptom Most likely cause What to check
Very low volume or almost no sound PHONO output connected to AUX/LINE without a phono preamp, or a built-in-preamp turntable left on PHONO when the destination expects LINE. Confirm the turntable output setting and add an external phono preamp if the turntable is PHONO-only.
Loud, harsh, or distorted sound LINE output connected to a receiver PHONO input, causing phono gain and equalization to be applied twice. Move the cable to AUX/LINE and set the turntable to LINE.
Persistent low hum Ground lead missing, loose, or incorrectly attached; an equipment-specific ground arrangement may also be involved. Check the ground terminal on both units, reseat RCA plugs, and follow the turntable manual. For the AT-LP3XBT, the manual says removing the ground line can help in a persistent-hum case.
Only left or right channel works Red/white plugs reversed, incompletely seated, or a cable problem. Reconnect white to L and red to R at every stage; test each plug for a firm fit.
No compatible speaker connector The speaker’s analog input and the supplied RCA cable use different connector types. Read the speaker input label and use a correctly wired stereo conversion cable if required. Do not substitute a cable that carries a different signal format.

These checks reflect the connection procedures in the Audio-Technica manual and Sony’s PHONO-versus-line guidance. If the symptoms remain, disconnect extra equipment and test the shortest valid chain: turntable and known-good phono path into one receiver or speaker input.

Choose the setup by equipment, not by connector shape

  • Turntable output: Is it PHONO-only, or can its built-in preamp provide LINE?
  • Receiver input: Does the receiver have a PHONO input, or only AUX/LINE and similar inputs?
  • Speaker type: Are the speakers powered, with their own amplifier, or passive and dependent on an external amplifier?
  • Analog compatibility: Do the powered speakers accept the turntable’s available line-level connector?
  • Grounding: Do the turntable and receiving phono device provide matching ground terminals?
  • Cable fit: Does the included RCA lead match the actual input sockets, or is a stereo conversion cable needed?

Sound-quality comparisons cannot be made responsibly from the connection type alone. The cartridge, turntable output stage, external preamp, receiver, speakers, and their settings all affect the result. First make the signal path electrically correct; only then evaluate the system.

Complete setup checklists

Receiver with PHONO input

  • Turntable output set to PHONO.
  • RCA plugs connected to receiver PHONO L/R.
  • Ground lead connected when both devices provide terminals.
  • Receiver selected to PHONO; volume raised slowly.

Receiver without PHONO input

  • For a built-in-preamp turntable: output set to LINE and RCA connected to AUX/LINE.
  • For a PHONO-only turntable: external phono preamp inserted before AUX/LINE.
  • Receiver selected to the exact input used.

Powered speakers

  • Turntable set to LINE, or an external phono preamp added for a PHONO-only model.
  • Speaker input confirmed as compatible analog stereo.
  • Volume control available on the speakers or in the signal chain.
  • Left/right channels matched and all plugs fully seated.

Passive speakers

  • Receiver or power amplifier placed between source and speakers.
  • Phono amplification supplied either by a receiver PHONO stage or an external preamp.
  • Amplifier output connected to the passive speakers; never connect the turntable directly to speaker terminals.

Why the PHONO-versus-LINE distinction matters

PHONO and LINE are not two interchangeable volume settings. PHONO is the low-level cartridge signal and expects dedicated amplification and equalization. LINE is the already-conditioned output intended for general analog inputs. Matching like with like prevents the two characteristic errors: a PHONO signal into LINE is extremely quiet, while LINE into PHONO is over-amplified and tonally wrong.

The same principle applies whether the receiving device is a vintage receiver, a modern integrated amplifier, an external phono preamp, or powered desktop speakers. The connector may still be RCA in every case, so read the function printed beside the socket and confirm the turntable switch position before troubleshooting anything else.

When to consult the model manual

Consult the manual whenever the labels are ambiguous, the turntable has multiple output modes, the speakers use an unusual input, or hum remains after the normal checks. The Audio-Technica document cited above applies to the AT-LP3XBT specifically, while Sony’s support page gives general receiver guidance. Manuals can specify a required ground arrangement, a particular adapter, a fixed output level, or a model-specific response to hum that cannot safely be generalized.

The Bottom Line

Use PHONO output only with a PHONO input or an external phono preamp. Use LINE output with AUX/LINE or compatible powered speakers. Passive speakers always need a receiver or amplifier, and every setup should be powered down while cables are connected and tested at low volume first.
