Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Connect the travel router to the hotel’s Wi-Fi in repeater, client, or WISP mode, then use a phone or computer connected to the router’s own network to complete the hotel’s sign-in page. Once authorized, the router shares its connection with your devices. Exact menus vary by brand, model, and firmware; the steps below are a documented GL.iNet example, not universal instructions.
What a captive portal does
A captive portal is the web page a public hotspot requires you to view or interact with before it grants internet access. GL.iNet Router Docs 4 defines it as: “A captive portal is a Web page where public hotspots require users to view and interact with the page before Internet access is granted.” That is why your device can connect to the hotel’s Wi-Fi while still being unable to reach websites: wireless association and portal authorization are separate steps.

Connect using a GL.iNet router
- Join the router’s Wi-Fi. Power it on and connect your phone or computer to its network. During first-time setup, set an administrator password if prompted.
- Open the admin panel. GL.iNet documents
192.168.8.1as its default address. Other brands may use a different address; check the router’s label or manual. - Join the hotel network. In the GL.iNet admin panel, go to INTERNET → Repeater, scan for the hotel’s Wi-Fi name (SSID), select it, and connect. Repeater mode joins an existing Wi-Fi network; in the documented default WISP arrangement, the router creates its own subnet.
- Complete the hotel sign-in. If a portal page appears, follow the property’s instructions, such as entering a room number or access code or accepting terms. Portal fields and procedures depend on the hotel.
- Trigger the portal if it does not open. If your router provides a public-hotspot login feature, enable it. On GL.iNet firmware v4.6 and later, the setting is called Auto-Enable Login Mode for Public Hotspots; GL.iNet says the router can prompt for this mode after detecting a captive portal. Then, on a device connected to the router, open a browser and follow the login link or visit an ordinary web page to trigger redirection.
- Confirm access. Check that the router reports an internet connection and that a device on its Wi-Fi can load a page. If the hotel’s authorization expires, repeat the portal sign-in.
GL.iNet’s repeater guide notes that a hotel network using a Wi-Fi channel the router does not support may not appear in the scan results. Check your specific router’s supported bands and channels as well as its manual.

The portal page will not appear
- Enable the router’s public-hotspot login mode if available, reconnect your phone or computer to the router, and open a browser page.
- For GL.iNet routers, the older v3 guide suggests temporarily disabling DNS rebinding attack protection, VPN clients, or AdGuard Home if enabled, then trying again. These are GL.iNet-specific troubleshooting suggestions; do not look for or disable equivalent settings on another router unless its documentation recommends it.
The device connects to Wi-Fi but has no internet
Wi-Fi association alone does not confirm that the hotel has authorized your connection. Check the router’s status and trigger the portal flow. Also check whether a VPN or filtering feature is interfering with sign-in. GL.iNet’s v4 guide says its login mode switches DNS to automatic while some services are suspended.

The hotel registers devices or limits connections by MAC address
Some properties associate access with a device’s MAC address. GL.iNet describes connecting a phone directly to the hotel network, recording the MAC address that the phone uses for that SSID, and cloning it to the router’s upstream connection. Modern phones may use a randomized or private address, so the address for the hotel network can differ from the hardware address shown in general device information.
Do not connect the phone and router upstream at the same time while both use the same cloned MAC. If cloning does not work, or the hotel requires stricter verification, ask staff whether they can register the router’s factory MAC address. Hotel rules vary; ask the front desk whether personal routers are allowed and whether registration is required rather than assuming the router can bypass a device limit or portal policy.

Understand the login-mode privacy tradeoff
GL.iNet says its public-hotspot login mode switches DNS to automatic and suspends some services, which may expose network activity to the hotspot provider. This is a documented tradeoff, not a quantified risk estimate. If you use a VPN, verify that it is connected after hotel sign-in and before sending sensitive traffic. The cited documentation does not establish that every VPN configuration will work through every hotel portal, and a travel router by itself does not make public Wi-Fi safe.
