Bluetooth Classic SPP, Wi‑Fi, TTL UART, and RS‑232 are different connection methods; none guarantees compatibility with another. For a print job, the wireless link carries data, while the printer’s supported command set—often a model-specific subset of ESC/POS—determines how that data is printed.
Choose a connection the printer and ESP32 both support
Before wiring or writing code, record the exact printer model, its documented interfaces, the ESP32 chip and software framework, and whether the printer is directly connected or available on the local network. Check the printer manual for its connector, signal levels, power requirements, baud rate if using serial, supported printer commands, and—if networked—its service protocol and port.

| Option | What to verify | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| TTL UART | Printer manual, logic levels, supply, ground, baud rate, and connector | Direct and simple when the model documents serial access; requires matching the wiring and electrical levels. |
| Bluetooth Classic SPP | SPP support on the printer and the exact ESP32 chip/framework | Wireless serial-style byte transport; it is not the same as BLE. |
| Wi‑Fi network printer | Printer address, network service, port, and raw ESC/POS support | Flexible network connection, but services and defaults vary by printer. |
| Wi‑Fi client to ESP32, then wired printer | ESP32 receiver protocol, message framing, security, and printer interface | Lets clients submit jobs to the ESP32, but requires an additional service that you design. |
Bluetooth: confirm Classic SPP, not just Bluetooth
Espressif documents that “The BluetoothSerial library provides Bluetooth Classic support on SoCs that include it.” Its Arduino-ESP32 example checks for CONFIG_BT_SPP_ENABLED and notes that SPP is available only for the ESP32 chip. Check the exact chip and framework version: support on one ESP32-family device does not establish support on another, and BLE-only capability does not mean Bluetooth Classic SPP is available. See Espressif’s Arduino-ESP32 Bluetooth documentation.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Pairing alone is not proof that the device exposes SPP. The ESP-IDF SPP API describes a virtual serial connection, so once compatible devices establish that link, the application can transfer bytes through it; consult Espressif’s SPP API documentation for its client/server roles and API details.

Wi‑Fi: distinguish a network printer from an ESP32 gateway
In the direct network-printer design, the ESP32 joins the relevant network and opens the printer’s documented service at its address and port. The esc_pos_printer package documentation describes TCP port 9100 as a common default for many printers, not a universal setting. Verify the actual protocol and port in the printer’s manual or configuration before connecting; see the package documentation.
A different design has a client send a job over Wi‑Fi to a server running on the ESP32, which then forwards it to a locally attached printer. That requires you to define how the receiver accepts jobs, frames them, handles errors, and protects access. It is not the same as connecting the ESP32 directly to a network printer.

- The printer supports a wide voltage range of 12V~24V, and the maximum voltage cannot exceed 24V. We provide three physical interfaces, RS232/TTL+USB, with TTL as the default. If you need to switch to RS232, you can contact us by email and we will tell you how to switch.
- We really like this printer because its easy to make Bold, underline , inverted text , variable line spacing, left/center/right justification, barcodes with adjustable height, and even custom QR code.
- Open the paper compartment cover on the front panel to change the paper, the operation is simple and convenient. The structure is beautiful, and the slider can be moved to fix the printer on the device by twisting the screws on both sides of the paper bin.
Wire serial printers only from the model’s electrical specifications
For documented TTL UART, the usual signal arrangement is host TX to printer RX, and printer TX to host RX if the printer returns status. The devices also need a shared signal ground. Those relationships do not tell you which connector pins to use or whether the electrical levels are safe: verify connector pinout, signal voltage, baud rate, and printer supply in the exact model’s documentation.
- Power the printer according to its manufacturer’s requirements. Do not power a thermal printer from an ESP32 GPIO.
- Do not assume the printer’s supply, logic voltage, or connector matches another model, even if both are sold as ESC/POS printers.
- If the printer uses RS‑232, do not connect its signals directly to ESP32 GPIO. Use a suitable level-translating interface specified for the hardware.
A Circuit Digest project describes a PNP-500/RS203 UART setup, but that is a model-specific example, not a universal wiring diagram. Use the project documentation only as an example and follow the manufacturer’s specifications for your printer.

Send printer commands and text bytes over the chosen link
ESC/POS is a stream of commands and data, not a document format that every thermal printer renders identically. Keep the transport and the print payload separate: UART, Bluetooth SPP, or a Wi‑Fi socket carries bytes; the printer’s supported commands and character encoding determine what those bytes do.
For a basic test, send the printer’s documented initialization command if supported, followed by a short ASCII message and line-feed bytes. Epson’s command materials list initialization (ESC @) and line feed (LF), but command support can vary by model. Check the relevant printer manual and Epson’s ESC/POS command reference and command index before relying on a command.

Start with plain ASCII. For accented characters or other non-ASCII text, find the printer’s supported code page and send bytes in the corresponding encoding; a string’s encoding on the ESP32 does not guarantee that the printer interprets it the same way. Also check whether the printer expects any model-specific framing or status handling.

Troubleshoot from the printer outward
- Nothing prints: Check that the printer is ready and has paper, then verify its supply, serial common ground, TX/RX orientation, baud rate, and whether the ESP32 is actually delivering bytes to the destination.
- Bluetooth fails to compile or pair: Confirm the exact chip and framework support Bluetooth Classic SPP. BLE support alone is not enough; check the
CONFIG_BT_SPP_ENABLEDcondition in the Arduino-ESP32 example. - Bluetooth connects, but output is garbled: Check the printer’s profile, text encoding, and whether application framing is changing the raw command bytes. SPP is a byte transport, not a text-encoding or printer-command translator; consult the SPP API and printer command documentation.
- Wi‑Fi connects, but nothing prints: Confirm the ESP32 and printer can reach each other on the intended network, then verify the printer’s actual service protocol and port rather than assuming port 9100. The package documentation presents that port as a common default, not a guarantee.
- Some commands work and others do not: Compare each command with the supported ESC/POS subset for the exact model. Epson’s reference portal provides command documentation, but the printer’s own manual determines model support.
