What you need for a modern-TV connection
The basic connection requires only the console, the supplied HDMI cable, a television with an open HDMI input and USB-C PD power. No scaler, converter or analog-video accessory is required for a TV that accepts HDMI.
| Item | Use | What the official guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| SuperStation One console | Provides the video output | Video comes from the console’s own HDMI output. |
| HDMI cable | Connects the console to the TV | An HDMI cable is included in the console package. |
| Modern TV with HDMI input | Receives the signal | Choose a free HDMI input and select it with the TV remote. |
| USB-C Power Delivery charger | Powers the console | Retro Remake’s setup guidance recommends a 9V/3A PD profile for SuperStation One; it also says 5V or 12V can work when the charger supports USB PD. |
A replacement HDMI cable is optional rather than required. Consider one only if the supplied cable is missing, damaged or fails during testing.

Identify the ports before plugging anything in
The console HDMI output
Look for the HDMI connector on the SuperStation One console body. This is the usable video output for a modern television. Plug one end of the supplied cable into this port and the other end into the TV.
The dock’s HDMI-shaped expansion port
The dock has a connector that looks like an HDMI socket, but it is not a video output. It is an expansion slot. Connecting the television there will not produce a picture, even when the cable is seated correctly and the TV is set to the corresponding input.
The television’s HDMI input
Use any free HDMI input on the TV that you can select from the input menu. Note the input label—such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2—so you can select the same port after the console is powered.
First-time setup: direct HDMI connection
- Place the console where the HDMI and USB-C cables can reach without tension.
- Insert the supplied HDMI cable into the HDMI output on the SuperStation One itself. Do not use the dock’s expansion connector.
- Connect the other end of the cable to a free HDMI input on the television.
- For the initial check, remove every device between console and TV. Disconnect HDMI switches, AV receivers, capture cards, splitters, adapters and any other intermediary hardware.
- Turn on the television and select the HDMI input used in step 3. Use the TV’s Input, Source or similar control; the exact label varies by television.
- Connect a USB-C charger that supports USB Power Delivery. The SuperStation documentation recommends a 9V/3A profile, while the setup page also states that 5V or 12V can work when the charger negotiates those PD profiles.
- Follow the official guidance to connect the HDMI cable before powering on the console. Starting with the display path already connected gives the TV and console the best chance to complete their initial HDMI handshake.
- Wait for the console’s startup output on the selected input. If the TV reports “No signal,” keep the setup direct and move to the troubleshooting checks below rather than adding more equipment.
This direct arrangement is the reference configuration. Once it works, you can test a switch or capture device one at a time if your room requires one. If the picture disappears after adding a device, you have isolated the likely source of the problem without changing several variables at once.
Why the official setup starts with a direct connection
HDMI devices exchange display information through EDID (Extended Display Identification Data). The television reports characteristics it supports, and the source chooses a compatible output mode. A switch, capture device, adapter or receiver can participate in that exchange, cache different data or delay the handshake. The SuperStation documentation specifically notes that an intermediary can affect EDID and lead to a blank screen.

That warning does not mean every switch or capture card will fail permanently. It means those devices should not be part of the first diagnostic path. Establish a picture from the console straight to the TV first; only then add one intermediary and retest. If the direct signal remains reliable but the signal fails through the added device, consult that device’s own HDMI and EDID settings rather than treating the TV as incompatible.
Selecting the correct TV input
Televisions can remember a previous source, automatically switch to another active input or display a home screen while the console is booting. Confirm the physical HDMI socket and the on-screen input selection match. For example, a cable in HDMI 2 requires the TV’s HDMI 2 source, not HDMI 1.

- Press the remote’s Input, Source or equivalent button.
- Choose the numbered HDMI input used by the console.
- Keep that input selected while powering the console.
- If the TV shows a source banner, wait for it to clear and check whether the console image appears.
The official material does not provide a compatibility matrix by TV manufacturer or model. Therefore, a successful connection should be understood as dependent on the particular TV, cable and signal path rather than as a guarantee for every television sold.
No picture: a systematic troubleshooting sequence
A black screen can result from a wrong input, an incorrect port, a cable fault, an HDMI intermediary, insufficient or unsuitable power, or a boot problem involving firmware or the SD card. Work through the checks in order so that each test answers one question.
1. Recheck both HDMI ends
Power or wake the TV, then push the HDMI plugs firmly into the console and TV. A plug that is partly inserted can leave the connection looking complete while carrying no usable signal. Inspect the cable for obvious damage and confirm that it is not sharply bent at either connector.

2. Verify the console port
Trace the cable to the SuperStation One. It must terminate at the console’s HDMI output, not the visually similar port on the dock. The dock connector is an expansion slot and does not send video.

3. Confirm the selected input
Use the TV remote to select the exact HDMI number containing the cable. If the television has multiple sockets, move the cable to another free input and select that input as a controlled test.
4. Remove every HDMI intermediary
Disconnect switches, splitters, capture cards, receivers and adapters. Connect the console directly to the television with only the supplied HDMI cable. This removes EDID variables and is the configuration recommended for initial setup.
5. Substitute a known-good HDMI cable
If the direct path is still blank, test another HDMI cable that is known to work with another device. This is a diagnostic substitution, not a requirement to buy an additional cable. Keep the console and TV ports unchanged while swapping the cable so the result is meaningful.
6. Try another display
Connect the console directly to a different TV or monitor if one is available. The official guide notes that computer monitors often accept a broader range of display resolutions and can be useful for initial setup or troubleshooting. A picture on the second display points toward a TV-specific handshake or input issue; no picture on either display means you should continue with power and boot checks.

7. Check power separately from video
Confirm that the USB-C charger is connected and supports USB Power Delivery. The documented recommendation is 9V/3A; the setup page says 5V or 12V can also work when the charger supports USB PD. A charger that cannot provide a suitable negotiated profile can prevent normal startup, which may look like a display failure even though the HDMI wiring is correct.
8. Consider firmware or SD-card boot issues
The official troubleshooting material treats firmware and SD-card problems as separate boot/setup checks. If the console does not complete startup on a direct connection, do not assume the TV is incompatible. Follow the project’s firmware and SD-card troubleshooting instructions, checking that the card and installed software meet the console’s requirements.
9. Repeat the direct test after each change
After correcting one item, return to the simple console-to-TV path and test again. Reattach a switch, capture card or adapter only after a direct picture is established. This prevents several simultaneous changes from hiding the cause.

For a modern television, the paths below are not equivalent. The first is the official starting point; the others either add variables or target a different kind of display.
| Path | Display connection | Extra conversion required | When to use it | Diagnostic status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Console HDMI output → TV HDMI input | Direct digital HDMI | None | Initial setup and normal modern-TV play | Recommended reference configuration |
| Console HDMI output → HDMI switch → TV | HDMI through a switch | No format converter, but the switch participates in EDID negotiation | After direct operation is confirmed, when several HDMI sources share one TV input | Remove during blank-screen diagnosis |
| Console HDMI output → capture device → TV or computer | HDMI through capture hardware | Capture hardware may alter or delay the handshake | Recording or streaming after a direct signal works | Remove during initial setup |
| Console HDMI output → adapter or converter → TV | HDMI through an additional device | Depends on the adapter | Only when a specific display system requires it | Not needed for a TV with HDMI; remove when troubleshooting |
| Analog output → legacy display | Analog video path | Potentially a format converter or compatible analog input | Older displays without a usable HDMI input | Outside the basic modern-TV setup |
The official setup material reviewed does not establish a universal TV-brand compatibility list or require a particular switch, capture device or converter. Avoid adding one solely because the television is modern; direct HDMI is already the intended path.

USB-C PD power guidance
Power is related to a successful picture but is not part of the HDMI cable connection. Use a USB-C Power Delivery charger and connect it according to the console’s setup instructions. Retro Remake recommends 9V/3A for SuperStation One. Its documentation also says that 5V or 12V can work when the charger supports USB PD, so do not interpret those voltages as universal behavior for every generic USB-C supply.
| Power detail | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| 9V/3A | Recommended profile in the SuperStation documentation. |
| 5V or 12V | Documented as workable when the charger supports USB Power Delivery negotiation. |
| Unknown USB-C supply | Not a reliable diagnostic baseline; use a charger whose PD capability and profile are known. |
If the TV remains on “No signal,” first verify that the console actually powers and boots. A display can be perfectly configured while the console is not reaching the stage at which it outputs video.
Using a computer monitor as a troubleshooting display
A monitor is useful as a temporary diagnostic target, not because a monitor is required. The official guide says computer monitors often support a broader range of display resolutions, which can make them helpful when a particular TV does not accept the console’s initial signal. Connect the console directly to the monitor’s HDMI input, select that input and use the same known-good power and cable arrangement.

After the direct connection works
Add one device at a time
If you need an HDMI switch, receiver or capture card, insert only one device between the console and TV, then test. Record which TV input and switch input are active. If the picture disappears, remove that device and return to the direct path before changing anything else.
Keep the working cable path identifiable
Once a cable and TV input are confirmed, label or remember them. A later “no signal” report is easier to diagnose when you know which components were part of the last working arrangement.
Do not move the cable to the dock port
The dock’s HDMI-shaped expansion port remains unsuitable for video even after the console is operating. Any future rearrangement should keep the display cable connected to the console’s actual HDMI output.

What this setup does—and does not—require
- It does require an HDMI input on the TV and an HDMI cable from the console output.
- It does require appropriate USB-C PD power for the console to boot normally.
- It does not require a converter or scaler for the basic modern-TV connection.
- It does not use the dock’s HDMI-shaped expansion port for video.
- It does not require an HDMI switch or capture card; those are optional additions that should be tested only after direct operation.
- It does not establish compatibility with every TV model. The available official setup material contains no TV-brand compatibility matrix.
