Connect the Steam Machine’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on your television, select that input, and complete the on-screen SteamOS setup. For controllers, a Steam Controller can pair directly through the Steam Machine’s built-in 2.4 GHz adapter; other controllers can use Bluetooth or USB. Open Steam Big Picture for a TV-focused interface.
What you need before starting
- A Steam Machine and a television with an available HDMI input.
- An HDMI cable long enough to reach the television. The cited Valve specifications do not establish that a cable is included in the box.
- Power for the Steam Machine and the television.
- Either a Steam Controller, another Bluetooth or USB controller, or a keyboard and mouse for setup and troubleshooting.
Keep the Steam Machine where its cables can reach the television and power outlet. Before changing advanced display settings, identify the HDMI input you plan to use, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.

How the TV connection works
HDMI is the direct connection described in Valve’s Big Picture TV setup guide. One HDMI cable carries both the picture and sound from the Steam Machine to the television, so a separate audio cable is not required for a normal TV setup.

| Steam Machine output listed by Valve | What it means for your setup |
|---|---|
| HDMI 2.0 | Use the Steam Machine’s HDMI output and a compatible HDMI input on the TV. |
| Up to 4K at 120 Hz | This is the maximum listed output capability; a TV or cable that supports less will limit the available mode. |
| HDR | HDR requires a television and input mode that support HDR, plus suitable game and system settings. |
| FreeSync | Variable refresh depends on a compatible display and enabled settings on both sides. |
| CEC | Control features depend on the television’s CEC implementation and whether it is enabled. |
Connect the Steam Machine to the television
- Turn off or leave both devices in standby. This is not a requirement stated by Valve, but it makes it easier to identify the correct connection and avoids accidentally switching inputs while you work.
- Connect the cable to the Steam Machine. Plug one end into the machine’s HDMI output. Do not use a similarly shaped port intended for another purpose.
- Connect the other end to the TV. Use an open HDMI input and note its label. The cable length and the input’s supported display mode should match how you plan to use the system.
- Power on the television and Steam Machine. Give the television a moment to detect the source.
- Select the matching TV input. Use the television remote’s Input, Source or equivalent control and choose the HDMI number used in step 3. Menu wording differs by TV manufacturer.
- Complete the first-run SteamOS setup. Follow the prompts to choose language and network options, sign in when requested, and finish the operating-system setup. Valve identifies SteamOS as the Steam Machine operating system, but the final retail screens and software version can change.
If the SteamOS screen appears, the basic video path is working. Sound should travel over the same HDMI connection; select the television as the output device if the system presents an audio-choice screen.
Open Steam Big Picture for TV use
Steam Big Picture reformats Steam for a television and game-controller interface. Valve’s Big Picture overview describes it as a TV-and-controller experience while also identifying keyboard and mouse as an option.
- Finish SteamOS setup and sign in to Steam.
- Launch Steam Big Picture from the Steam interface or the available TV-oriented mode.
- Use the controller, or connect a keyboard and mouse if you need to navigate account, network or display settings.
- Open a game’s controller settings before playing if that game offers its own input selection.
Big Picture changes navigation and presentation; it does not guarantee that every third-party controller or every game will expose identical controls.

| Controller path | Connection to Steam Machine | Useful when | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Controller through the integrated adapter | Direct wireless connection using the Steam Machine’s built-in 2.4 GHz adapter | You want the documented Steam Controller pairing path and a cable-free setup | Valve says one adapter can support up to four Steam Controllers. |
| Steam Controller over Bluetooth | Bluetooth wireless | You need the controller’s alternative wireless mode | Valve lists Bluetooth support, but the exact pairing screen depends on the final software. |
| Steam Controller or another controller over USB | USB cable | You want a wired connection or need to navigate setup while wireless pairing is unresolved | The cited sources do not provide a model-by-model compatibility list for other controllers. |
| Keyboard and mouse | USB or another supported connection | You need desktop-style navigation, account entry or troubleshooting | Valve identifies keyboard and mouse as an option for Big Picture use. |
Pair a Steam Controller directly with the Steam Machine
Valve’s Steam Controller page states: “Steam Controller pairs easily to Steam Machine without its puck.” The built-in adapter is therefore the intended direct wireless route; the separate puck is not required for this pairing path.
- Turn on the Steam Machine and leave it at the SteamOS or Steam interface.
- Turn on the Steam Controller.
- Open the controller or Bluetooth-related settings presented by SteamOS or Steam Big Picture and choose the option to add or pair a controller.
- Select the Steam Controller when it appears. Complete any on-screen confirmation.
- Move through Big Picture menus to verify that the controller responds before starting a game.
Valve documents the direct adapter connection, but it does not publish a universal first-boot button sequence in the cited material. If the final software shows different labels, follow the pairing instructions shown on that screen rather than relying on a generic menu name.
Use more than one Steam Controller
Valve lists support for “Up to four with a single adapter!” Pair the controllers one at a time and test each one in Big Picture. A game may still impose its own player-count or local-multiplayer limits, so adapter capacity is not the same as a guarantee that every game will accept four simultaneous players.

Connect a controller over Bluetooth

- Open SteamOS or Big Picture’s Bluetooth or controller settings.
- Put the controller into its pairing mode using the instructions supplied with that controller.
- Choose the controller from the discovered-device list.
- Wait for the connected or paired status, then test the sticks, buttons and triggers in Big Picture or the controller-test screen if one is provided.
- Start the game and confirm that its input settings recognize the controller.
Do not assume that a controller’s ability to pair over Bluetooth means every game supports its layout. The cited Valve pages do not certify every third-party model, wireless profile or game.
Connect a controller with USB
- Use a USB cable that carries data, not a cable that only supplies power.
- Connect the controller to a Steam Machine USB port.
- Wait for SteamOS to detect it, then open Big Picture’s controller settings.
- Test the controls before launching a game.
USB is also a practical fallback when wireless pairing is unavailable or when you need an input device to complete initial setup. The source material confirms USB support for the Steam Controller; it does not establish compatibility for every other controller model.
Match the TV, cable and output settings
The Steam Machine’s listed maximum of 4K at 120 Hz should be treated as an upper capability, not a promise that every television will show that mode. Check the specifications for the exact HDMI input you used: some televisions reserve their highest refresh rate, HDR or variable-refresh features for particular inputs or settings.

- If your television supports only a lower resolution or refresh rate, select a mode it can display instead of forcing the maximum listed output.
- If 4K at 120 Hz is unavailable, try the TV’s other HDMI inputs and verify the input’s enhanced or high-bandwidth mode, if the TV provides one.
- For HDR, enable HDR on the television only after confirming that the selected input supports it; then check the SteamOS and game display settings.
- For FreeSync, the display must support the feature and it may need to be enabled in the TV’s picture or gaming menu as well as in software.
- CEC behavior is television-specific. It may allow compatible power or control actions, but its label and available functions differ by manufacturer.
Use a cable long enough to reach without tension and rated for the display mode your television supports. The cited specifications do not identify a particular cable brand or confirm that one is supplied.

Troubleshoot a blank screen or missing sound
No picture
- Confirm that the HDMI cable is fully inserted at both ends.
- Check that the TV input selected is the same physical input used by the Steam Machine.
- Try another HDMI input on the television.
- Try another known-good HDMI cable that supports the mode you are attempting.
- Power-cycle the television and Steam Machine, then select the input again.
Do these basic checks before changing resolution, HDR or refresh-rate settings. If another input works, the original input may have a capability or configuration limitation.
Picture but no sound
- Make sure the television is not muted and that its audio output has not been redirected to another device.
- Verify that the Steam Machine is using HDMI or the television as its audio output, if SteamOS presents an audio-device selector.
- Reconnect the HDMI cable and reselect the input.
Valve’s Big Picture guide describes HDMI as carrying both video and audio, so a separate audio connection is not normally needed for the TV.
Picture appears at the wrong resolution or refresh rate
Open the display settings and choose a mode supported by the television’s selected HDMI input. A TV may support 4K at 120 Hz on one input but a lower mode on another. If the screen goes blank after selecting an unsupported mode, wait for the operating system’s automatic recovery or reconnect using a mode the TV can display; use a keyboard and mouse or a wired controller if wireless input is not yet available.
Troubleshoot controller pairing and input
The Steam Controller does not appear
- Keep the controller close to the Steam Machine during pairing.
- Confirm that you are using the Steam Machine’s built-in adapter path rather than waiting for a separate puck.
- Remove an old or duplicate entry from the controller or Bluetooth list, then try pairing again.
- Connect the controller by USB to navigate settings while you resolve wireless pairing.
- Restart the Steam Machine and controller, then repeat the on-screen pairing process.
The direct-adapter feature and the absence of a puck requirement are documented by Valve. The cited material does not define a universal recovery sequence for every software build.

A Bluetooth controller pairs but a game ignores it
First test the controller in Big Picture or Steam’s controller settings. Then inspect the individual game’s input options and confirm that the game supports the controller type and connection mode. Pairing at the operating-system level does not establish universal game compatibility.
Several controllers are connected but players are not assigned correctly
Disconnect unused devices, pair the active controllers one at a time and check the game’s local-multiplayer or player-order screen. The adapter’s stated capacity is up to four Steam Controllers, while each game determines how many players and input devices it actually accepts.
What Valve’s documentation does and does not establish
| Established by the cited Valve pages | Not established by those pages |
|---|---|
| HDMI is the TV connection for Big Picture, carrying picture and sound. | That an HDMI cable is included with every retail package. |
| Steam Machine uses SteamOS and lists HDMI 2.0, up to 4K at 120 Hz, HDR, FreeSync and CEC. | A guaranteed retail specification, since Valve says some specifications may change before availability. |
| The built-in 2.4 GHz adapter can pair Steam Controllers directly, with up to four supported by one adapter. | A complete compatibility matrix for third-party controllers and games. |
| Steam Controller supports Bluetooth and USB as alternative connection methods. | Current stock, pricing, exact included accessories or the final first-boot screen sequence. |
Final setup checklist
- HDMI cable connected from the Steam Machine output to the TV input.
