Connect the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC/ARC to the soundbar’s HDMI output labeled HDMI OUT (TV ARC/eARC) or similar. Then set the TV’s audio output to HDMI ARC/eARC and select the matching TV/ARC input on the soundbar.
Before you connect: check both devices’ HDMI labels
Look at the labels beside the HDMI ports on the TV and soundbar. Use the TV’s port marked ARC or eARC/ARC; an ordinary HDMI input may not send TV audio back to the soundbar. On the soundbar, find the HDMI output marked TV ARC, eARC, or an equivalent label. Port names and availability vary by model. LG’s connection guide, Sony’s audio-system guide, and Samsung’s eARC explanation all direct users to the designated ARC/eARC ports.

Connect the TV and soundbar
- Connect the labeled ports. Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the TV’s ARC or eARC/ARC port and the other into the soundbar’s HDMI output for TV ARC/eARC. Follow both products’ manuals if the port labels differ. Sony recommends an authorized Premium High Speed HDMI cable in its guide, but its guidance does not establish that every setup requires that cable type; check your device manuals for cable requirements.
- Set the TV’s audio output. In the TV’s sound or audio settings, choose HDMI ARC/eARC as the audio output. The exact menu path and wording depend on the manufacturer and model.
- Select the soundbar input. Choose the TV, ARC, or corresponding HDMI input/function on the soundbar. LG’s examples include “HDMI ARC” and “OPT/HDMI ARC”; other devices may use different names. LG notes that setting methods and menu names differ by manufacturer.
- Check HDMI-CEC if needed. If your equipment has an ARC/eARC or HDMI-CEC setting, enable it or set it to Auto as the manual specifies. Samsung calls its HDMI-CEC feature Anynet+. Remote-control behavior can vary by brand and model.
- Play TV audio. Start a TV program or other content and check that sound comes through the soundbar. If the menus or indicators do not match these descriptions, use the model-specific manuals.
If there is no sound
- Confirm compatibility. Check the specifications or manuals for both devices and verify that both support ARC/eARC. Support on only one device is insufficient.
- Recheck the cable ends. Make sure the cable runs between the TV’s designated ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s designated HDMI output. Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends.
- Verify the selected output and input. Set the TV to HDMI ARC/eARC audio output and the soundbar to its TV/ARC input. Look for ARC/eARC or TV Audio Input options set to On or Auto where your model provides them.
- Check the connection settings. Make sure the applicable ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC settings are enabled or set as directed in the manuals. Menu labels and behavior are not uniform.
- Use another connection if ARC/eARC is unavailable. Sony lists optical or another audio cable as a fallback when ARC/eARC cannot be used. This provides an alternative connection, not equivalent ARC/eARC support.
ARC or eARC: what should you choose?
Use the connection and settings supported by both your TV and soundbar. The actual audio-format support depends on the specific devices, and the labels alone do not establish which formats a particular setup can pass. Check the specifications and manuals for both models before relying on a format or expecting a particular difference in sound. Manufacturer setup guidance does not support a universal claim that eARC will always produce a noticeable improvement.
