How to Connect a Solana Wallet to a Decentralized Exchange

To connect a Solana wallet to a decentralized exchange (DEX), open the DEX’s verified official site, select Connect Wallet, choose your installed wallet, inspect the wallet prompt, and approve the connection. On mobile, Phantom says this connection flow works only in Phantom’s in-app browser—not Safari, Chrome, or another mobile browser.

Connecting lets the DEX see your public address and, usually, related account information such as token balances. It does not approve every future swap. Each message signature, token delegation, or blockchain transaction must be reviewed and approved separately in your wallet.

What you need before connecting

A connection is straightforward, but the safety checks matter more than the button you click. Have these items ready:

  • A self-custody Solana wallet such as Phantom or Solflare, installed from its official source.
  • The exact DEX domain, verified through the project’s official materials or a trusted directory. Sponsored search results, copied domains, unsolicited messages, and airdrop links are common ways to reach an impersonation site.
  • Your wallet unlocked and available on the device you are using.
  • A small SOL balance if you expect to trade after connecting. Solflare gives 0.01 SOL as an example amount for network fees, but that is an example rather than a universal requirement or current fee quote.

You do not need to reveal your recovery phrase, private key, PIN, or password to connect. A legitimate DEX never needs any of them.

How to connect a Solana wallet on a desktop browser

1. Verify the DEX before opening it

Start from the project’s official communication or a trusted Solana directory and check the domain character by character. Look for substituted letters, extra words, unusual top-level domains, and links that redirect through another site. Once the correct page is confirmed, bookmark it so you do not have to find it through an advertisement later.

2. Open the DEX and choose Connect Wallet

The control is commonly in the upper-right corner, although its wording and position vary by exchange. It may say Connect, Connect Wallet, or use a wallet icon. If the page asks you to download a different wallet before it displays the normal wallet chooser, stop and verify that you are on the intended site.

3. Select your installed wallet

Choose the wallet you actually use, such as Phantom or Solflare, from the DEX’s own list. The Solana wallet directory lists multiple wallets and hardware-wallet integrations, but directory inclusion is informational and does not guarantee that every wallet works with every DEX. If your wallet is absent, do not install a substitute from a pop-up; check the DEX documentation and your wallet’s supported-app information.

4. Read the wallet connection prompt

Your wallet should identify the site requesting access and describe the connection. Confirm that the domain matches the page you intentionally opened. A connection request is different from a swap request: at this stage, the DEX is generally asking to associate its interface with your public address.

5. Approve the connection

Approve only if the site and wallet are correct. The DEX should then display an abbreviated version of your public address, a connected-wallet indicator, or account details. Compare the first and last characters with the address shown in your wallet. Never confuse this indicator with approval for a later transaction.

6. Keep the wallet available for later actions

When you select a swap, liquidity action, or another feature, the wallet will open a new prompt. Review that prompt independently. The earlier connection does not pre-authorize it.

How to connect Phantom on a mobile phone

Phantom’s official mobile instructions specify that app connections work inside Phantom’s built-in browser. Opening the same DEX in Safari, Chrome, or another mobile browser is not the supported connection path described by Phantom.

  1. Open the Phantom mobile app and unlock it.
  2. Open Phantom’s search bar or in-app browser.
  3. Enter the DEX’s app name or its verified URL, then open the site inside Phantom.
  4. Tap the site’s connect control.
  5. Choose Phantom when the wallet choices appear.
  6. Read the connection details, confirm the site, and tap Connect.
  7. If Phantom presents a message-signing prompt to finish the connection, read it before approving. Do not sign an unexplained message merely because the page says it is required.

Switching to another account in Phantom disconnects the app from the previous account. You must reconnect after changing accounts, and you should verify that the DEX now shows the intended public address.

What “connecting a wallet” actually allows

Phantom describes the relationship precisely: “When you connect Phantom to an app (dApp) or site, the app or site can see your public address and ask you to approve actions like signing messages or submitting transactions.”

The DEX can use the public address to display balances, token holdings, account activity, and available trading functions. It cannot use the connection alone to move funds. In Solana’s signing model, a transaction executes only when every required signer supplies a valid signature. Your wallet remains the place where those signatures are authorized.

That distinction does not make every prompt safe. A malicious or misleading site can ask you to sign a message, approve a transaction, or grant a spending permission that creates future risk. Treat every prompt as a new decision.

How to approve a swap safely after connecting

Check the asset movement

Before approving a swap, verify the token you are paying, the token you expect to receive, the amount, and any stated slippage or minimum-received value. If the wallet preview shows an asset leaving an account you did not intend to use, reject the prompt.

Check fees and the destination

Review the network fee and any DEX or route fee shown by the wallet or exchange. Solflare says its transaction prompt can show moved assets, fees, called contracts, and potentially risky permissions, and may simulate the transaction. Treat those details as a review aid, not a guarantee that the transaction is harmless.

Look for permissions that outlive the swap

A token delegation can allow a program or account to spend tokens later without requesting a fresh approval for every expenditure. If a normal-looking swap asks for an unexpected or unlimited delegation, decline it and investigate what the permission does. A connection request should not be treated as consent to indefinite spending.

Desktop extensions, mobile browsers, and hardware wallets

The right setup depends on where you trade and how you want to sign. No wallet is universally safest or best; the official sources support comparing connection method, custody model, and hardware-wallet support.

Setup Connection method Signing and custody Important limitation
Desktop wallet extension Open the DEX in a desktop browser and choose the installed extension from Connect Wallet. You hold the keys and approve signatures in the extension. The exact wallet list and prompts vary by DEX.
Phantom mobile Open the DEX in Phantom’s in-app browser, then connect from inside that browser. You approve messages and transactions in the Phantom app. Phantom says Safari, Chrome, and other mobile browsers are unsupported for this connection flow.
Solflare Use the wallet option offered by the DEX on desktop or a supported mobile setup. You manually sign transactions; the wallet can expose transaction details and permissions for review. Menus and supported apps can change, so confirm that the chosen DEX lists Solflare.
Solana-compatible hardware wallet Connect the hardware device through a compatible wallet and DEX workflow. Private keys remain on the physical device while you approve transactions on the device or wallet interface. Compatibility is model-, wallet-, and DEX-specific; verify it before buying or attempting a trade.

The Solana wallet directory, updated September 2, 2026, documents wallet and hardware-wallet options. It is a reference list, not an endorsement and not proof that a particular combination supports every DEX feature.

Do you need SOL to connect?

Usually, the connection itself is not a blockchain transaction and does not consume a network fee. SOL becomes relevant when you submit an on-chain action such as a swap, liquidity deposit, withdrawal, or account-related transaction. Solflare’s 0.01 SOL example is useful as a reminder to keep a fee reserve, but the amount needed depends on the transaction and current network conditions.

A wallet can therefore connect successfully while still being unable to complete a swap because it lacks enough SOL for fees or lacks the token required by the trade. Check the wallet balance and the transaction preview before assuming that a failed trade means the connection is broken.

Security checklist for every DEX connection

  • Verify the domain. Use official project materials or a trusted directory, then bookmark the confirmed page.
  • Use official wallet downloads. Avoid extensions or mobile apps delivered through unsolicited links.
  • Protect the recovery phrase. Never type it into a DEX, token-claim page, support chat, form, or “verification” window. Anyone who obtains it can control the wallet.
  • Inspect every prompt. Check the site, account, assets, fees, destination, and permissions before signing.
  • Stop at unexpected delegation. A request allowing future spending deserves explanation before approval.
  • Use a separate test wallet for unfamiliar apps. Create it with a unique recovery phrase and fund it only with an amount you can afford to lose.
  • Do not rely entirely on warnings. Solflare cautions that automated warnings and transaction simulations cannot detect every malicious transaction.
  • Remember that Solana transactions cannot be reversed. Preventing an unwanted signature is much safer than trying to recover assets afterward.

How to disconnect a DEX and review spending approvals

Disconnecting removes the app’s active association with the wallet interface; it does not undo a transaction that has already been confirmed and does not necessarily revoke token permissions. If your wallet supports it, review both connected apps and spending approvals.

Solflare’s documented approval controls

Solflare documents spending-approval controls under Settings → Security and Privacy → Spending Approvals. The exact labels may change. Review old entries, remove permissions you no longer need, and investigate any approval you do not recognize.

After testing an unfamiliar DEX

  1. Disconnect the app from the wallet’s connected-app controls.
  2. Review token spending approvals and revoke unnecessary permissions where supported.
  3. Move remaining assets to a wallet you trust if the site behaved suspiciously or requested an unexplained signature.
  4. If you entered a recovery phrase anywhere other than the wallet’s legitimate recovery process, treat that wallet as compromised and move assets to a newly created wallet with a different phrase.

Troubleshooting common connection problems

The wallet does not appear in the DEX menu

Confirm that the wallet extension or app is installed, unlocked, and using the Solana account you expect. Refresh the DEX, check whether the DEX lists that wallet officially, and try the supported connection method. Do not install a wallet offered only by an unexpected pop-up.

Clicking Connect does nothing

On desktop, check that the wallet extension is enabled for the current browser profile and that a pop-up blocker is not hiding the request. Close duplicate DEX tabs, reload the verified page, and retry. On Phantom mobile, move the entire process into Phantom’s in-app browser rather than an external browser.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The DEX shows the wrong address

Open the wallet account selector and switch to the intended Solana account, then disconnect and reconnect the DEX. Phantom notes that changing accounts disconnects the app, so reconnecting is expected. Verify the first and last characters of the address before trading.

The connection works but a swap fails

Check that you have enough SOL for network fees, hold the token being sold, and have selected the correct account. Read the failed transaction message and wallet simulation. A failed swap is not proof that the wallet connection failed; connection and transaction submission are separate events.

The wallet shows an unfamiliar permission

Reject the request. Do not approve a delegation, message, or transaction simply to make the page proceed. Verify the DEX domain independently, research the program named in the prompt, and use a separate low-value wallet if you later decide to test the application.

Optional: using a hardware wallet

A Solana-compatible hardware wallet can keep signing keys on a dedicated physical device and add a deliberate, device-based approval step. It is optional for connecting to a DEX and does not eliminate the need to verify websites or inspect transactions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility must be checked at three levels: the hardware model, the wallet software, and the specific DEX. Solana’s directory documents hardware-wallet integrations, including Solflare Shield, but the available material does not establish compatibility for every model or every DEX. Confirm current support before purchasing a device or moving funds to it.

Key distinctions to remember

  • Connecting identifies your public address to the DEX; it is not blanket permission to trade.
  • A message signature, token delegation, and blockchain transaction are different requests and require separate scrutiny.
  • Mobile Phantom connections should be made inside Phantom’s in-app browser.
  • A small SOL reserve helps with later on-chain fees, but the example amount of 0.01 SOL is not a universal fee requirement.
  • Your recovery phrase belongs only in the legitimate wallet recovery flow, never in a DEX or support conversation.
