To connect a smart kettle, first identify its exact model, install the manufacturer’s app, put the kettle into pairing mode, and add it to the Wi‑Fi network specified in its manual. Many current examples require a 2.4 GHz network, but that is not universal. Some app-enabled kettles use Bluetooth instead of Wi‑Fi and therefore cannot be operated remotely when you are away from home.

The precise screens and button sequence depend on the maker. Morphy Richards’ Halo Alexa Kettle is added through the Alexa app, while Swan’s Alexa Kettle is connected in the Swan app before its Alexa skill is linked. Use the model-specific instructions below rather than assuming one setup process works for every kettle.

  • Exact model name: Read the label, packaging, base, or manual. “Smart kettle” is not a single technical standard.
  • Manufacturer’s app: Install the app named in the kettle’s manual. Some models begin in a maker app; others, such as the Morphy Richards Halo example, begin in Alexa.
  • Wi‑Fi name and password: Have the network credentials available and enter the password exactly, including capitalization.
  • Supported network band: Check whether the kettle requires 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi. The cited Morphy Richards Halo and Swan Alexa instructions do.
  • Power: Plug the kettle into mains power and leave it powered throughout discovery and setup.
  • Phone or tablet: Keep the device on the same home network you intend to give the kettle, unless the maker’s instructions say otherwise.
  • Account details: Alexa-based models may require an Amazon account; Swan’s Alexa integration also requires a Swan account.

Keep the kettle close to the router for the initial pairing. A short distance reduces the chance that a weak signal interrupts discovery, even if you later move the kettle to its normal location.

Check whether the kettle uses Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth

An app icon does not prove that a kettle has Wi‑Fi. Read the model’s specifications before trying to configure a router.

Wi‑Fi kettles

A Wi‑Fi kettle joins your home network. After setup, its maker app can generally communicate through the internet, subject to the model’s capabilities and account service. Voice assistants may be able to control it after a separate skill or account-linking step.

Bluetooth kettles

A Bluetooth kettle pairs directly with a nearby phone. Xiaomi’s official Mi Smart Kettle FAQ, for example, says that the kettle connects to the phone over Bluetooth rather than Wi‑Fi. Its app can show real-time temperature and let you customize keep-warm settings, but the kettle cannot be operated remotely in the way a Wi‑Fi kettle can. These characteristics apply to that model; check the specification for any other kettle.

The standard Wi‑Fi setup sequence

Manufacturers use different app labels, but the underlying process is usually similar. Stop and consult the model manual whenever a screen or button does not match.

  • Smart Control: Connect your electric kettle to the app to schedule and adjust the temperature anytime. When boiled you will receive a notification. You can also voice control the electric tea kettle via Alexa & Google Assistant for added convenience.
  • Versatile Infuser: The tiny hole of the infuser prevents leaf spill out. Brew loose tea leaves or tea bags with the infuser. Use it to heat water, make a coffee, or prepare food without the infuser.
  • Customized Brewing Program: 4 preset temperature from 180 °F to 212 °F for green tea, oolong tea, coffee and black tea. Temperature accuracy of 1°F makes this product ideal for beginners and professionals.
  • Digital Screen Display: The base has an LED screen to view target and real-time temperatures. 1500 W power heats 1.7 L water in 8 minutes and insulates for up to 2 hours. Convenient app control to adjust insulation time.
  • Prioritizes Safety: Made of BPA-free food-grade 304 stainless steel for safety and durability. Auto shut-off and boil-dry protection. To prevent scaling and corrosion, wash regularly and empty after each use.
  1. Install and sign in to the required app. Use the manufacturer’s app or the voice-assistant app named by the manual. Grant only the permissions needed for device discovery and network setup.
  2. Plug in and switch on the kettle. The kettle must remain powered while the app searches. If it has a display or Wi‑Fi indicator, wait for it to finish its startup sequence.
  3. Enter pairing mode. Use the model’s documented button or touch control. A flashing Wi‑Fi symbol, rapidly blinking indicator, tones, or a spoken prompt may confirm that the kettle is ready.
  4. Choose Add device. In the app, select the appliance category and the exact maker or model. Do not select a similarly named device just to continue.
  5. Allow discovery. Keep the phone near the kettle and wait while the app searches. If discovery times out, return the kettle to pairing mode before trying again.
  6. Select the home network. Choose the required 2.4 GHz network when the model specifies that band. If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one name, follow the kettle maker’s guidance rather than guessing which band was used.
  7. Enter the password carefully. Confirm every letter, number, capitalization mark, and symbol. A wrong password can look like a pairing failure.
  8. Finish and test. Wait for the app to report that the kettle is online, then operate a safe, basic function from the app. Verify that the device remains listed after closing and reopening the app.

Example: Morphy Richards Halo 1.5L Alexa Kettle

The Morphy Richards Halo 1.5L Alexa Kettle has a model-specific setup documented by Morphy Richards UK Support. The maker calls for a smartphone or tablet with the Alexa app, an Amazon account, compatible 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, the network password, and mains power.

QR-code setup in Alexa

  1. Open the Alexa app and start the option to add a device.
  2. Choose the kettle category and select Morphy Richards when prompted.
  3. Use the QR setup option if the app offers it and your kettle’s instructions provide a code.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to place the kettle into pairing mode.
  5. When Alexa displays available networks, select the compatible 2.4 GHz network.
  6. Enter the Wi‑Fi password exactly and wait for the confirmation screen.
  7. Open Alexa’s Devices view and confirm that the kettle appears there.

Manual setup when QR scanning is unavailable

If scanning is not possible, the Morphy Richards guide directs you through Devices → + → Add Device → Kettle → Morphy Richards. Select “Don’t have a code?” when the QR step is offered, then continue with the manual pairing and network prompts. The labels can change as the Alexa app is updated, so use the kettle category and maker name rather than searching for an unrelated appliance type.

How to put this model into pairing mode

In the Morphy Richards manual pairing procedure, hold the SET control until all LEDs flash three times and the kettle beeps three times. Those three flashes and three beeps indicate that the kettle is ready to pair. The control and signal are specific to this model; do not assume another kettle uses the SET button or the same pattern.

Network details that matter for the Halo

Morphy Richards specifies compatible 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi for the Halo. Its support guidance also emphasizes accurate password entry, keeping the kettle reasonably close to the router, and checking for unusual characters or symbols in the network name or password if setup repeatedly fails. Treat those character warnings as this model’s documented guidance, not as a universal limitation of every router or smart kettle.

  • 1500 WATTS FOR FAST BOILING: Boil water ultra-fast for tea, pour-over coffee, hot chocolate, soups and more. The kettle has 1500 watts of power to provide fast boiling every time.

Example: Swan Alexa Kettle

Swan’s documented flow is different: connect the kettle in the Swan app first, then connect that device to Alexa.

  1. Plug in the kettle and power it on.
  2. Open the Swan app and choose its device-add or pairing option.
  3. Put the kettle into pairing mode. Swan identifies a flashing Wi‑Fi light as the relevant indicator.
  4. Choose the required 2.4 GHz network and enter its password.
  5. Wait until the Swan app shows the kettle as connected or online.
  6. Open Alexa and enable the Swan Kettle skill.
  7. Sign in with the Swan account associated with the kettle.
  8. Run Alexa’s device discovery so the kettle is added to the Alexa device list.

If Alexa cannot find the kettle, Swan’s support guidance says to check the flashing pairing indicator, confirm the 2.4 GHz network, verify that the Swan Kettle skill is enabled, confirm that the correct account is linked, and run discovery again. Restarting the kettle or router, then resetting and reconnecting the kettle if necessary, are later steps rather than the first thing to try.

Using the phone app and Alexa: what each connection does

The maker app is the first place to verify that the kettle itself is connected. Alexa is an additional integration, not a replacement for the manufacturer’s pairing process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the maker app works

If the kettle responds in its own app but Alexa cannot find or control it, the Wi‑Fi connection is probably established and the problem is in the assistant integration. Amazon’s third-party-device guidance recommends checking the relevant skill and reactivating it when necessary, then running discovery again.

When the maker app does not work

Do not troubleshoot the Alexa skill first. Confirm that the kettle is powered, in pairing mode, connected to the network required by the model, and showing an online status in the maker app. Amazon advises setting up non-Matter Wi‑Fi devices in the manufacturer’s app before connecting them to Alexa.

Phone control without Alexa

Alexa is not a universal requirement for app control. A kettle that supports control in its maker app can be operated there without enabling a voice-assistant skill. The skill is needed only for the Alexa features that the model supports.

Troubleshoot in this order

Changing several settings at once makes it difficult to identify the cause. Work from the physical connection outward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Confirm power and pairing mode

  • Check that the plug is fully inserted and the kettle is switched on.
  • Look for the model’s documented pairing light, display message, tones, or other indicator.
  • Repeat the pairing-button procedure exactly. On the cited Morphy Richards model, hold SET until three LED flashes and three beeps occur.
  • If the indicator has stopped, start pairing mode again immediately before reopening discovery in the app.

2. Check the Wi‑Fi band and signal

  • Read the manual for the supported band. The cited Morphy Richards Halo and Swan Alexa examples specify 2.4 GHz.
  • If your router presents one combined network name for several bands, follow the kettle maker’s instructions for selecting or temporarily exposing the required band.
  • Move the kettle nearer the router during setup if the signal is weak.
  • Do not infer that every smart kettle is limited to 2.4 GHz; the requirement is model-specific.

3. Re-enter the credentials

  • Type the network name and password rather than relying on an old saved entry if you are unsure it is current.
  • Check capitalization and punctuation.
  • For the Halo, Morphy Richards specifically advises checking unusual characters or symbols in the network name or password when pairing fails.

4. Check the maker app’s status

  • Wait for the app to show the kettle as online or connected.
  • Close and reopen the app, then test a basic control.
  • If the kettle disappears, repeat pairing mode and reconnect it rather than repeatedly starting Alexa discovery.

5. Check the Alexa link

  • Confirm that the correct manufacturer skill is enabled.
  • Sign in with the account used during the maker-app setup.
  • Reactivate the skill if the maker app controls the kettle but Alexa does not.
  • Run device discovery after reactivating or linking the skill.

6. Restart or reset only after the basic checks

For Swan’s documented failure path, restart the kettle and router before resetting and reconnecting. A reset erases the pairing state, so have the Wi‑Fi password and account details ready before using it. The exact reset control is model-specific and should come from the manual.

What to do when your router has one network name

Some routers automatically steer devices between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz while showing a single network name. That can make it unclear which band the kettle is receiving. Because the cited Halo and Swan instructions require 2.4 GHz, use the router’s documented guest-network, band-selection, or temporary split-network option if the maker recommends one. Do not change advanced router settings blindly; if the model’s support page does not explain combined bands, contact the maker or router provider for a compatible procedure.

How to verify a successful connection

  1. Check that the kettle remains listed in the maker app after you leave the pairing screen.
  2. Use the app while your phone is on the home Wi‑Fi network.
  3. Turn off the phone’s Wi‑Fi briefly and test only if the model claims internet-based remote control; Bluetooth-only kettles will not behave this way.
  4. If Alexa is supported, ask Alexa to discover devices after the maker app shows the kettle online.
  5. Confirm that the device name in Alexa matches the kettle you added, especially if more than one appliance is present.

A successful app pairing and successful Alexa discovery are two separate outcomes. Record which one works when troubleshooting so you can focus on the failed layer.

Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and remote control compared

Choosing between models: questions to ask

If you are deciding which smart kettle fits your routine, compare the connection and recovery details before comparing cosmetic features.

  • Does it use Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth? Bluetooth may be sufficient when you always use the kettle beside your phone, but it does not provide the same remote behavior.
  • Which app starts setup? A maker-app-first flow and an Alexa-first flow require different accounts and screens.
  • Which Wi‑Fi band is required? A stated 2.4 GHz requirement affects how you configure a dual-band router.
  • How is pairing indicated? A clear light, tone, or display message makes recovery easier. The Halo’s three flashes and three beeps are a concrete example.
  • What happens when Alexa cannot find it? Check whether the maker app remains online, whether a skill must be enabled, and whether account linking is required.
  • Can the kettle be reset without a full manual? Because reset controls differ, retain the model’s instructions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to add a Bluetooth-only kettle as if it were a Wi‑Fi appliance.
  • Starting Alexa discovery before the manufacturer app reports a successful connection on a maker-app-first model.
  • Assuming every smart kettle accepts 5 GHz because another device in the home does.
  • Entering a password with an incorrect capital letter or omitted symbol.
  • Starting discovery while the kettle has left pairing mode.
  • Moving the kettle to its final location before setup succeeds near the router.
  • Resetting the kettle before checking power, pairing indication, band, password, and app status.

When to contact support

Contact the kettle maker when the exact model’s pairing indicator never appears, the app rejects a confirmed network password, or the kettle repeatedly drops offline after a successful setup. Provide the model name, the phone operating system, the app version if shown, the router’s band configuration, and the precise step where setup stops. For Alexa problems, state whether the maker app can still control the kettle; that distinction tells support whether the fault is in Wi‑Fi setup or the assistant link.

The Bottom Line

Use the exact model’s instructions: put the powered kettle into pairing mode, connect it to the required network in the correct app, and add Alexa only after the maker app works. Confirm whether the kettle is truly Wi‑Fi or merely Bluetooth before expecting remote control.
