The most dependable way to transfer files from a Samsung phone to a Chromebook is a USB data connection: connect the unlocked phone, tap “Charging this device via USB”, choose “File Transfer”, then use the Chromebook’s Files app to drag files between devices. If you do not want a cable, use Quick Share for nearby wireless transfers. Phone Hub is useful for notifications, recent photos, Chrome tabs and other phone controls, but it is not the general-purpose file-transfer tool.
Google documents the USB procedure in its Android file-transfer guide, Quick Share setup in its Chromebook help page, and Phone Hub in its Phone Hub instructions.

Choose the right connection method
Your goal determines which feature to use. USB is the straightforward choice for moving files in either direction when you have a suitable cable. Quick Share is convenient for selected nearby files without a cable. Phone Hub connects the devices for broader integration, but it does not replace USB File Transfer or Quick Share when you need to browse and move files.
| Method | Best for | What you need | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB File Transfer | Moving files directly with the Chromebook Files app | A USB cable that supports data and compatible connectors | The phone must be unlocked and switched from charging to File Transfer |
| Quick Share | Sending selected files wirelessly between nearby devices | Quick Share enabled on the Chromebook and a discoverable phone and Chromebook | Visibility settings determine whether the devices can find one another |
| Phone Hub | Notifications, recent photos and screenshots, Chrome tabs and supported phone controls | Bluetooth and a compatible Chromebook and Android phone | It is an integration feature, not a general file browser |
In practical terms, choose USB when you want to browse the phone’s storage and move several items manually. Choose Quick Share when you want a cable-free handoff of selected files and both devices are close by. Choose Phone Hub only when the goal is ongoing device integration rather than copying files.

Prepare the Samsung phone and Chromebook
For a USB transfer
- Use a cable with data capability. Some USB cables provide power only, so a phone may charge without offering a file-transfer option.
- Check that the cable’s connector fits both the Samsung phone and the Chromebook. If the existing cable only charges, replace it with a compatible USB data cable; no particular brand or model is required.
- Have the phone unlocked when you connect it. Android presents the USB mode notification on the phone rather than in the Chromebook’s Files app.
For Quick Share
- Quick Share on Chromebook requires ChromeOS 91 or later, and Google lists Android 6.0 or later for Chromebook Quick Share. These are the requirements on Google’s Quick Share help page, not a universal requirement for every connected-phone feature.
- Quick Share is off by default on a Chromebook, so set it up before attempting to send a file.
- Decide which visibility level is appropriate: Your devices, Contacts, Hidden or Available to everyone.
For Phone Hub
Phone Hub setup requires Bluetooth. Google’s Phone Hub page lists a Chromebook running M89 or later and an Android phone running Android 5.1 or later. Those thresholds apply to Phone Hub specifically; they should not be substituted for the separate Quick Share requirements.
Transfer files with a USB cable
USB is the clearest workflow when you want to move files manually and see the phone as a location in the Chromebook’s file manager. Follow these steps in order.
- Connect the devices. Plug the Samsung phone into the Chromebook with the USB cable.
- Unlock the phone. Android may not expose the transfer controls while the phone is locked.
- Open the USB notification. On the phone, tap the notification labeled “Charging this device via USB.”
- Change the USB purpose. Under “Use USB for,” select “File Transfer.” This changes the connection from charging-only behavior to a data connection.
- Open the Chromebook’s Files app. Google’s instructions indicate that the Files app opens for the transfer. If it is not already visible, open Files from the Chromebook launcher and look for the connected phone.
- Drag the files. Select the files or folders you need in the phone’s location and drag them to a Chromebook location, or drag items in the opposite direction to copy them to the phone. Keep the Files app open until the copy operation has completed.
- Finish and unplug. When the transfer is complete, unplug the cable.
The important step is selecting File Transfer on the phone. Connecting a cable alone does not tell Android that you want to exchange data, and a charging-only cable cannot carry the files even when the phone appears to be charging normally.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhat the Files app is doing
After Android is placed in File Transfer mode, the Chromebook can present the phone as a storage location in Files. The Chromebook is not using Phone Hub for this operation; it is using the USB connection that Android explicitly authorized. You can therefore use the normal Files-app actions for selecting and dragging items rather than trying to locate a Phone Hub control.
Move files in either direction
The USB workflow is not limited to downloading from the phone. In the phone’s location in Files, select the items to copy to the Chromebook. To send items back, select them in a Chromebook folder and drag them to the phone’s location. In both directions, wait for the copy operation to finish before disconnecting.
When a cable replacement is justified
Buy or borrow another cable only when the current one is unsuitable or unavailable. The useful specification is data-capable USB cable, together with connectors that match both devices. The supported method does not require a particular Samsung accessory or Chromebook accessory.

Send files wirelessly with Quick Share
Quick Share is Google’s documented nearby-sharing route between Android and Chromebook. It is useful when you want to send a few chosen files without connecting a cable, but both devices must be configured to see one another.

Set up Quick Share on the Chromebook
- Open Settings.
- Select Connected devices.
- Open Quick Share and select Set up.
- Give the Chromebook a device name when prompted.
- Choose the visibility setting that should apply while you share.
Google lists four visibility choices. Your devices is intended for devices signed in to the same Google Account. Contacts limits discovery to people in your contacts. Hidden prevents ordinary discovery until you change the setting. Available to everyone makes the Chromebook discoverable to nearby senders, and Google says that setting remains active for up to 10 minutes.
Send a file from the Samsung phone
- Open the file on the Samsung phone.
- Tap Share or Send, depending on the app’s label.
- Choose Quick Share.
- Select the Chromebook from the nearby-device list.
- Complete the transfer prompt shown on the phone or Chromebook.
- Check notifications on both devices for confirmation that the transfer has finished.
When both devices use the same Google Account, Google says transfers are accepted automatically. For other visibility choices, follow the acceptance prompt that appears on the receiving device.
Use temporary visibility safely
If the Chromebook is not appearing, you can temporarily turn on visibility from the Quick Share quick settings. Use the shortest exposure that solves the transfer, then return the Chromebook to the visibility level you actually want. In particular, Available to everyone is time-limited to up to 10 minutes according to Google, but you should still check the setting after the transfer rather than assuming it has returned to a previous state.
What Quick Share is best at
Quick Share is designed for choosing files on the phone and sending them to a nearby recipient. It is therefore a good alternative when you do not have a cable or do not want to browse the phone from Files. It does not remove the need to configure the Chromebook: Quick Share must be set up, and its visibility must allow discovery. If you need to inspect folders and move many items in both directions, USB remains the more direct workflow.
Set up Phone Hub for connected-phone features
Phone Hub is separate from file transfer. It connects a supported Android phone and Chromebook so the Chromebook can expose selected phone features such as phone notifications, recent photos and screenshots, Chrome tabs and other supported controls. If your objective is simply to copy a file, use USB File Transfer or Quick Share instead.

Setup from the Chromebook shelf
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone and Chromebook.
- Near the Chromebook clock, select the Phone control.
- Choose Get started.
- Follow the on-screen pairing steps.
- Choose which Phone Hub features to enable.
Alternative setup path
You can also open Settings > Connected devices > Android phone and follow the setup prompts. The available feature switches let you decide how much phone integration the Chromebook should provide. Pairing Phone Hub does not change the USB mode of a cable and does not make the phone a general-purpose location in Files.
Why Phone Hub can be confusing
Phone Hub may show recent photos or screenshots, which can make it appear to be a complete file manager. Its purpose is broader device integration, not unrestricted browsing of the phone’s storage. When the task is “copy this chosen file” or “move this folder,” start with USB File Transfer or Quick Share instead of looking for a Phone Hub transfer command.
Compatibility requirements by feature
Google publishes different version thresholds for different connected-device functions. Keep the requirement tied to the feature you are using rather than treating one number as a universal minimum.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Feature | Chromebook requirement | Phone requirement | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Share on Chromebook | ChromeOS 91 or later | Android 6.0 or later | Google Chromebook Quick Share help |
| Phone Hub | ChromeOS M89 or later | Android 5.1 or later | Google Chromebook Phone Hub help |
| Google’s general connected-phone features | ChromeOS 71 or later | Android 6 or later | Google Chromebook connected-phone help |
| USB File Transfer | Not stated as a version threshold on the cited Android transfer page | Not stated as a version threshold on the cited Android transfer page | Google Android file-transfer help |
Work- or school-managed Chromebooks may have connected-device features restricted by an administrator. A feature can therefore meet its published version requirement and still be unavailable under an organization’s policy. If a personal Chromebook works but a managed one does not, policy restrictions are a reasonable first check rather than assuming the Samsung phone is defective.
Troubleshoot the common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The phone only charges over USB | The phone is locked, or the USB mode is still charging | Unlock the phone, tap “Charging this device via USB,” and select “File Transfer.” |
| The File Transfer option never appears or does not work | The cable may carry power but not data, or its connector may not fit the devices correctly | Try a different cable that explicitly supports data and matches both connectors. |
| The Chromebook is missing from Quick Share | Quick Share may be off, or the Chromebook’s visibility may be Hidden or otherwise too restrictive | Open Settings > Connected devices > Quick Share, complete setup, and choose a visibility level that allows the phone to discover the Chromebook. You can temporarily enable visibility from Quick Share quick settings. |
| A Quick Share transfer is waiting for approval | The receiving device may require an on-screen acceptance prompt | Check notifications and prompts on both devices. Transfers between devices using the same Google Account are automatically accepted according to Google. |
| Phone Hub is available but files are not visible there | Phone Hub is being used for a task it was not designed to perform | Use USB File Transfer for Files-app browsing or Quick Share for selected wireless files. |
| A connected feature is unavailable on a managed Chromebook | Work or school administration may restrict connected-device functions | Ask the organization’s administrator whether USB, Quick Share or Phone Hub access is allowed. |
A short troubleshooting order
For USB, check the phone’s lock state and USB notification first, then test a known data-capable cable with matching connectors. For Quick Share, check Chromebook setup, device visibility and the receiving prompt in that order. If neither method is available on a work or school Chromebook, ask the administrator whether connected-device features are permitted. These checks address the common setup failures without assuming a device-specific hardware fault.
Which method should you use?
Choose USB when you need direct file browsing
Use USB File Transfer when you have a suitable data cable, want to move multiple items manually, or need the Chromebook’s Files app to show the phone as a storage location. It does not depend on Quick Share visibility, but the phone must be unlocked and placed in File Transfer mode.

Choose Quick Share for a cable-free handoff
Use Quick Share when the devices are nearby and you only need to send selected files. It avoids buying a cable, but you must enable Quick Share on the Chromebook and select a visibility option that permits discovery. Same-account devices are the simplest case because Google says their transfers are accepted automatically.
Choose Phone Hub for ongoing integration
Set up Phone Hub when you want Chromebook access to phone notifications, recent photos and screenshots, Chrome tabs or other supported controls. Do not select it as the file-transfer method merely because the phone and Chromebook are already paired; use the dedicated USB or Quick Share workflow for moving files.
Cost and equipment considerations
You may not need to buy anything. USB works with a cable you already own if it carries data and has compatible connectors, while Quick Share requires no cable. If the current lead only supplies power, the relevant replacement description is a USB data cable or data-capable USB cable. No particular brand or model is required by the documented procedure.
