The right way to connect a Samsung Galaxy tablet to a TV depends on what you want on the larger screen. Use Smart View for wireless screen mirroring, wireless Samsung DeX for a desktop-style workspace, or a USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter for a direct wired connection. Before buying an adapter, verify that your exact tablet model supports video output: a USB-C socket does not guarantee HDMI support.
Smart View and wireless DeX require a compatible TV or display, while wired HDMI requires a compatible tablet, adapter or cable, and an available HDMI input. The steps and limitations below cover each method, including DRM restrictions, model exclusions and fixes when the TV does not appear.

Choose the connection that matches your goal
| Method | Best for | What you need | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart View | Showing the tablet screen wirelessly | Smart View on the tablet, a compatible TV or display, and both devices on the same Wi-Fi network | Not available on every Galaxy device; protected content may refuse to mirror |
| Wireless DeX | A desktop-style interface without an HDMI cable | A DeX-compatible tablet and a TV, smart monitor or other display that supports Miracast | Availability depends on the tablet, display and software version |
| Wired HDMI or DeX | A direct connection when you want to avoid wireless setup | A tablet with HDMI video output, a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable, an HDMI cable where required, and a free TV HDMI input | Several Galaxy Tab FE and Lite models do not support HDMI output |
Samsung does not publish a quantified comparison of the methods’ latency, picture quality or reliability in the support material for these features. Choose based on compatibility, convenience and whether you need simple mirroring or a desktop workspace rather than on an assumed performance difference.
Prepare the tablet and TV
Identify the exact tablet model
Open Settings > About tablet and note the model name and model number. This matters particularly for HDMI: the connector’s shape is not proof that the tablet can send video. Samsung’s DeX FAQ specifically lists the Galaxy Tab S9 FE, Tab S9 FE+, Tab S10 FE, Tab S10 FE+ and Tab S10 Lite as not compatible with HDMI output. Check the current specifications or support page for your exact model before purchasing a USB-C-to-HDMI accessory. See Samsung’s compatibility list at Samsung’s DeX FAQ.

Check the TV’s wireless-display support
For Smart View or wireless DeX, the television must support the wireless-display technology required by the tablet. Samsung describes Miracast-compatible displays as the relevant requirement, and Samsung TVs and Smart Monitors from 2018 onward are listed as supported for wireless DeX when paired with a compatible Galaxy device. This is a compatibility condition, not a promise that every Galaxy tablet works with every TV.
Put both devices on the same network for Smart View
Connect the tablet and TV to the same Wi-Fi network before starting Smart View. If the TV has a screen-mirroring setting or a separate source/input for wireless display, enable it or select it first. A guest network, client isolation or a TV connected to a different router can prevent discovery even when both devices appear to have internet access.
Have the correct physical connections ready
- For wired video, use a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or DeX cable that is compatible with the tablet’s HDMI output mode.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to an unused HDMI port on the TV if the adapter does not include a captive cable.
- Keep the TV remote available so you can select the exact HDMI input.
- Unlock the tablet during initial setup; DeX may ask you to approve the connection on the tablet or TV.
Method 1: Mirror the tablet with Smart View
Smart View duplicates the tablet’s screen on the TV. It is the simplest choice for showing photos, a presentation, a browser page or an app that permits wireless mirroring.
Start Smart View
- Turn on the TV and switch it to its screen-mirroring or wireless-display mode if the TV requires that step.
- On the Galaxy tablet, swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings. Swipe again if necessary to show all tiles.
- Tap Smart View. It is a built-in Quick Settings feature; you do not need to download a separate Smart View app.
- Select the TV or display from the list.
- Approve the request on the TV. If a PIN appears, enter it on the tablet.
- Accept any confirmation on the tablet. The tablet screen should then appear on the TV.
Samsung’s current screen-mirroring instructions, including the same-network requirement, are available at Samsung’s “Screen mirroring to your Samsung TV” guide.
What Smart View can and cannot show
Smart View availability varies by Galaxy model and software. Samsung Support states, “Smart View is not available on every device.” Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance describes Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 4.3 or later with displays that support Miracast, but the actual menu and compatibility still depend on the model and region. See Samsung’s DeX and display guidance and Samsung’s Smart View troubleshooting page.

Digital-rights-managed (DRM-protected) video may not mirror. A successful connection does not guarantee that every streaming service or protected movie will appear on the TV. If only a black screen or an error appears while other tablet content mirrors normally, use the service’s native TV app or another playback method supported by that service rather than assuming the tablet or TV is broken.
Stop or change the mirror
Open Quick Settings, tap Smart View, and choose Disconnect (the wording can vary by One UI version). You can also disconnect from the Smart View control shown in the notification shade. Turning off the TV or leaving its wireless-display mode normally ends the session.

Method 2: Use wireless Samsung DeX
Wireless DeX is for a separate, desktop-like interface on the TV or monitor. Instead of simply enlarging the tablet’s current screen, it presents a DeX workspace with resizable windows, a taskbar and desktop controls. The tablet remains available as a touchpad or can be paired with a keyboard and mouse.
Connect from Settings
- Turn on the compatible TV or smart monitor and open its wireless-display or screen-sharing mode if required.
- On the tablet, open Settings.
- Tap Connected devices, then Samsung DeX.
- Tap Connect wirelessly.
- Select the TV or smart monitor from the detected-device list.
- Approve the connection on the display if a prompt appears.
- Tap Start now on the tablet.
Samsung’s tablet-specific instructions are at “Use Samsung DeX on your Galaxy tablet.” Menu names can differ with the tablet’s One UI version.
Check wireless DeX eligibility
Samsung says wireless DeX works with compatible Galaxy devices and 2018-and-later Samsung TVs, Samsung Smart Monitors and other displays that support Miracast. The year alone does not establish compatibility: the particular tablet and TV model must both support the feature. Samsung’s eligibility and setup details are also summarized in its DeX support guide.

- CHECK YOUR DEVICE FIRST( USB-C MALE TO HDMI FEMALE): This adapter works with USB Type C ports that support DP Alt Mode. Want to be sure before you buy? Check your device specs - not every USB-C port sends video.
- ONE-WAY VIDEO & AUDIO OUTPUT: This adapter sends video and audio from your USB-C device to an HDMI display. It does not support charging, and it is not designed for HDMI-to-USB-C direction.
- 4K@60Hz USB-C TO HDMI ADAPTER CABLE: Get clear 4K picture at 60Hz from a compatible USB-C laptop or tablet. It also works with older HDMI 1.4, 1.3 and 1.2 screens.
- PLUG AND PLAY, NO SETUP: Turn your USB-C port into an HDMI port with no drivers and no installation. What you see depends on your device and your screen.
- EXTEND YOUR REACH: Going from USB-C male to HDMI female lets you keep using the HDMI cable you already have, and place your laptop or phone where you want it.
Control DeX on the TV
- Use the tablet’s touchpad mode when you do not have a mouse.
- Pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for longer typing sessions.
- Use the S Pen where supported for pointing or drawing.
- Keep the tablet charged; wireless DeX leaves the tablet running while the display is connected.
Wireless DeX is not the same as Smart View. If you want the TV to show exactly what is on the tablet, choose Smart View. If you want windows and a desktop layout, choose DeX.
Exit wireless DeX
Use the DeX notification or the DeX controls on the tablet to disconnect, or turn off the wireless display. The precise button label varies by software version. Save open work before disconnecting, particularly if an app has not synchronized its latest changes.
Method 3: Connect with a wired USB-C-to-HDMI setup
A wired connection avoids wireless discovery and network problems, but it only works when the tablet supports HDMI video output. Samsung documents a DeX cable, HDMI cable or standard USB-C-to-HDMI adapter for compatible Galaxy tablets.
Connect the hardware
- Confirm that the exact tablet model supports HDMI output. Do this before buying the adapter; the FE and Lite models listed in Samsung’s FAQ do not.
- Plug the USB-C end of the compatible adapter or DeX cable into the tablet’s USB-C port.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to an HDMI input on the TV, unless the adapter has a built-in HDMI lead.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input used in the previous step.
- Unlock the tablet. If a DeX prompt appears, tap Start or approve the connection.
Samsung’s wired directions and accessory requirements are documented in its DeX support guide and Galaxy tablet DeX instructions.
Choose mirroring or DeX after connection
Some compatible tablets initially mirror the tablet screen; others offer DeX immediately. If the TV is showing a mirror but you want the desktop interface, open the tablet’s notification shade or Quick Settings and select the DeX control. If the tablet offers a connected-display mode, choose the DeX or extended-display option rather than mirror.

Samsung’s One UI 8 and Android 16 troubleshooting guidance describes selecting Extend where that control is available when an external display mirrors instead of launching DeX. Because this label is version-sensitive, use the option shown on your tablet rather than searching for an identical button name. See Samsung’s external-display troubleshooting page.
Disconnect safely
Save work before removing the HDMI cable. Samsung notes that unplugging the cable can restart DeX. Close or save documents, then disconnect the HDMI cable from the adapter or TV and remove the USB-C connector from the tablet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Smart View, wireless DeX or HDMI: which should you use?
Choose Smart View when the TV is an occasional second screen
Smart View requires the least equipment and is suitable for sharing the tablet’s current screen. It is the natural first attempt when the TV and tablet are already on the same Wi-Fi network and the TV supports the required wireless display function.
Choose wireless DeX for productivity
Wireless DeX makes more sense for documents, multitasking and keyboard-and-mouse work. It requires both a compatible tablet and a compatible Miracast display, so it is less universal than simple mirroring.

Wired HDMI is useful when wireless discovery is unreliable, the TV is not on the same network, or you prefer a physical connection. Its decisive limitation is tablet support: an adapter cannot add HDMI output to a model that lacks the necessary hardware.

Troubleshoot a Smart View connection
The TV does not appear
- Confirm the tablet and TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, not separate guest or isolated networks.
- Check that the TV supports Miracast or its equivalent wireless screen-mirroring mode.
- Open the TV’s screen-mirroring setting or select the correct wireless-display source.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and on on the tablet, then reopen Quick Settings and Smart View.
- Restart both the tablet and TV. Samsung specifically recommends restarting as a common Smart View fix.
Additional checks are listed in Samsung’s Smart View and Screen Mirror troubleshooting guidance.
The connection works but video is black or blocked
DRM-protected content may intentionally prevent mirroring. Test with the tablet’s home screen or an unprotected photo. If those appear, the wireless link is functioning; use the streaming service’s TV application or another approved playback path for the protected title.
The image disconnects repeatedly
Move the tablet and TV closer to the Wi-Fi access point, avoid switching networks during setup and restart both devices. Samsung’s support material does not establish a universal distance, speed or latency threshold, so do not treat a particular signal number as a guaranteed fix.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Troubleshoot wireless DeX
The TV is missing from the DeX list
- Verify that the TV or monitor supports Miracast and that its wireless-display mode is active.
- Confirm the tablet model supports wireless DeX; Smart View availability does not automatically prove DeX availability.
- Restart the display and tablet, then repeat Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connect wirelessly.
- Try the TV’s own screen-sharing source instead of leaving it on a regular HDMI or broadcast input.
DeX connects but control is awkward
Use the tablet as a touchpad, or pair a Bluetooth or USB keyboard and mouse. The S Pen can also help with pointing on supported tablets. These control choices change how you work in DeX but do not change the display’s compatibility requirements.
Troubleshoot a wired HDMI connection
The TV says no signal
- Recheck the exact tablet model against Samsung’s HDMI-output information. A USB-C port by itself is not sufficient.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the adapter at the tablet and the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Use the TV remote to select the HDMI input that physically contains the cable.
- Test another HDMI input or another known-good HDMI cable.
- If possible, test the adapter and tablet with another display. Samsung recommends trying a different display when troubleshooting a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI connection.
Samsung’s model exclusions and wired troubleshooting are covered in the DeX FAQ and external-display support guidance.
The display mirrors instead of opening DeX
Use the notification shade or Quick Settings DeX control to switch from mirroring to DeX. On tablets running software that exposes the external-display mode, choose Extend when available. The exact controls vary by One UI release, so a missing label may indicate a software difference rather than a failed cable.
The tablet charges but shows no picture
Charging only proves that the USB-C connection carries power; it does not prove that it carries video. Reconfirm HDMI-output support for the model, then verify the adapter’s compatibility and the TV input. If the tablet is one of Samsung’s listed FE or Lite exclusions, replace the HDMI plan with Smart View or wireless DeX if the tablet and TV support those options.

Buying a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter without a compatibility mistake
“USB-C to HDMI adapter” is the relevant accessory category for a wired Galaxy tablet setup, but it is not a universal solution. First establish that the tablet supports HDMI output. Then select an adapter or DeX cable that explicitly supports the tablet’s USB-C video mode and the HDMI connection your TV accepts. A multiport adapter can be useful if you also need USB accessories, but extra ports do not overcome a tablet’s lack of video output.
Quick Recap
- Check the tablet’s exact model number, not only its marketing family name.
- Confirm whether the adapter requires a separate HDMI cable.
- Make sure the TV has a free HDMI input and that you can select it.
- Keep the receipt until the tablet successfully displays on the TV; compatibility claims vary by model and software.
Quick decision checklist
- Want the tablet screen exactly as it is? Try Smart View.
- Want windows, a taskbar and keyboard-and-mouse control? Try wireless DeX.
- Want a cable and no wireless discovery? Use HDMI only after confirming video-output support.
- TV not found wirelessly? Check Miracast support, the TV’s wireless-display mode and the same Wi-Fi network, then restart both devices.
- Protected video blocked? Use the service’s native TV app or another approved playback route.
- FE or Lite model? Check Samsung’s HDMI exclusions before purchasing an adapter.
