To connect a retro computer to a modern TV or monitor, first identify the video signal the computer actually outputs—such as RF, composite, S-Video, RGB/SCART, or VGA—then choose a cable and converter that accept that signal and produce an input your display supports. The connector’s shape alone is not enough to identify the signal.
Identify the computer’s video output first
Check the computer’s manual and the labels around its ports. Similar-looking sockets can carry different signals, and some computers need a model-specific cable before their video can reach a converter. A broad overview of common connection routes is available in Retro Compute’s guide to connecting a retro computer to a modern TV.

- RF (aerial or coax): Some older computers output video over an aerial-style connection. Converting RF for a modern digital display may require RF demodulation before video conversion. Of the routes discussed here, RF is the least direct and generally the lowest-quality option.
- Composite: Often carried on a yellow RCA plug or through a computer-specific video lead. A composite-to-HDMI converter is suitable only if the computer is actually outputting composite.
- S-Video: This separates brightness and color compared with composite, but both the computer and converter must support it.
- RGB/SCART: RGB can provide a cleaner signal than composite, but the computer may need an RGB cable and the converter must accept RGB. A SCART socket or plug does not by itself prove that the signal is RGB; SCART can also carry composite video.
- VGA or another monitor output: Check the computer’s timing as well as its connector. A converter that accepts VGA may not support every resolution, refresh rate, or scan mode the computer produces.
RetroTINK’s product range lists several legacy input families, including SCART, VGA, composite, and S-Video, but supported inputs differ by model. Consult the RetroTINK product information and the exact model’s documentation rather than assuming the range-wide list applies to every device.

If the display has an input that directly matches the computer’s signal and timing, you may not need a converter. If the display accepts only HDMI, you need a converter or scaler that accepts the computer’s signal and outputs HDMI. The full chain may look like this:
#1 Best Overall
- RCA Female to HDMI Video Converters Adapter : The cable is used to convert analog composite input to HDMI 1080p output, displayed on a 1080p HD TV/TV/monitor.
- Input ports: 1xRCA Female (Yellow, White, Red), Output ports: 1xHDMI 1.3 1080p. NOT support 3D and 4K, NOT support HDMI Converts to AV
- AV to HDMI Converter: Plug and Play, Easy to Install and Operate, Powered by External USB Cable. Note: Please hook up the USB power cable (included) to 5V 1Apower source during use (not included power supply ).
- Support PAL, NTSC3.58, NTSC4.43, SECAM, PAL/M, PAL/N standard TV formats input. For PS2,PS3,Xbox,N64,STB, VHS, VCR, DVD Players and other devices with standard composite AV input.
- You Will Get : 1x RCA Female TO HDMI Converter, 1xHDMI cable, 1xUSB cable, 1xUser Manual. ONE YEAR WARRANTY - if you are not satisfied for any reason whatsoever, do not hesitate to contact us .
- Computer output: Identify the signal—not just the port.
- Computer-side cable: Add the correct machine-specific lead or breakout if the computer requires one, particularly for RGB from a monitor output.
- Converter or scaler input: Confirm that it accepts the signal arriving from that cable.
- Display input: Confirm the converter’s output matches an available TV or monitor input, and check the display’s supported timing.
Choose the conversion route according to the source and the result you want. A basic composite-to-HDMI device may be a simple option for a compatible composite source, but converter quality varies and this is not a universal adapter. Dedicated processors and scalers can offer more input types and processing choices; their exact capabilities depend on the model. An RGB-focused scaler such as the OSSC is a conditional option for a computer with a compatible RGB output, not a default choice for every retro machine. These options are outlined in Retro Compute’s connection guide.
Compare converters against your setup
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Input signal | The converter must accept the computer’s actual output: RF, composite, S-Video, RGB/SCART, VGA, or another format. |
| Computer-side cable | Some computers need a specific cable or breakout to produce the signal the converter expects. |
| Output | The converter must output HDMI or another signal your display can accept. |
| Timing and scan mode | Check support for the computer’s resolution, refresh rate, scan mode, and region-specific format. |
| Picture controls | Decide whether straightforward conversion is sufficient or whether you want additional scaling and image-processing controls. |
| Interlaced or unusual modes | Look for explicit support and any sync-handling requirements in the converter’s manual. |
Do not treat a manufacturer’s performance description as an independent measurement. RetroTINK describes its original 2X line doubler as an affordable way to convert retro-console signals for modern TVs “with minimal lag and visual distortions”; that is the company’s description of that product, not a measured guarantee for every source or setup. See the RetroTINK About page.

Troubleshoot a missing or unstable picture
Change one variable at a time so you can isolate where the signal path fails. These checks are diagnostic prompts, not proof that one fault has a single cause.
- No picture: Confirm that the computer and converter are connected using matching signal types. Check that any required computer-side cable is correct, the converter is powered, its selected input matches the connection, and the display is set to the input receiving the converter’s output.
- Monochrome or distorted color: Recheck the cable wiring, signal type, and regional video format. A familiar connector shape does not guarantee compatible wiring or color encoding.
- Picture appears but is unstable or rejected: Check the converter and display manuals for the computer’s exact timing and scan mode. Interlaced or unusual signals may need suitable sync handling; compatibility cannot be inferred from the presence of an HDMI output alone.
- SCART connection does not work as expected: Verify whether the computer is sending RGB or composite and whether the converter accepts that specific signal. “SCART to HDMI” does not necessarily mean RGB support.
For example, RetroTINK’s 5X firmware update log documents experimental downscaling options and warns that third-party HDMI-to-analog adapters are not guaranteed to work; it also notes that 480i requires appropriate sync handling. These are product-specific caveats, not universal rules for every scaler. Check the 5X firmware update log alongside the current manual and firmware information for the device you are considering.

What to confirm before buying
There is no single adapter that can be recommended for every retro computer. Before buying, record the computer’s exact model and revision, the signal it outputs, any cable it needs, and the inputs available on your TV or monitor. Then match those details against the converter’s specific input formats and supported timings. If the computer model or its output is uncertain, its manual or machine-specific documentation is the right place to resolve that uncertainty before choosing hardware.
