How to Connect a Razer Headset to PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch

The correct way to connect a Razer headset depends on its exact model and connection mode—not simply whether the plug is USB, USB-C, Bluetooth, or 3.5 mm. Check the model’s official platform list first, then use the matching procedure below. A supported USB-wireless headset normally needs its included transceiver and a powered-on headset; a 3.5 mm model uses the computer, controller, or console audio jack; Bluetooth works only where that specific headset and platform support it.

After the physical connection, verify two separate settings: the headset must be selected for audio output and, when you want voice chat, for microphone input. Xbox requires the most careful model check because some Razer wireless headsets do not support Xbox wireless at all, while Xbox-licensed models may require a dedicated Xbox position on their dongle.

Check the Razer model before connecting anything

Razer sells headsets with several connection systems, and compatibility is model-specific. Two headsets that both include a USB-C connector may support entirely different consoles. Read the model name on the earcup, box, or product label and compare its official platform list with the device you want to use.

The connection method and platform must both be supported. A USB receiver that works on a PC does not automatically work on Xbox, and Bluetooth availability does not guarantee Bluetooth audio on every console. Razer’s Barracuda X Chroma listing, for example, names PC, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and other devices but specifically excludes Xbox wireless.

What to verify on the product page

  • The exact model and generation, such as Barracuda X (2022), Barracuda X Chroma, Kaira or an Xbox-licensed BlackShark model.
  • Whether the listed platform support applies to USB wireless, Bluetooth, 3.5 mm, or another mode.
  • Which receiver is supplied and whether it is USB-C, USB-A, or connected through an adapter.
  • Whether the microphone is carried over the selected connection.
  • Any required receiver switch position, console mode, software, or firmware procedure.

How to connect a Razer headset to a PC

USB wireless on Windows

Use this procedure when your model’s documentation lists Windows PC support for its wireless transceiver. Razer documents this flow for Barracuda, Barracuda X and Barracuda Pro families.

  1. Charge the headset, then turn it off while you prepare the receiver.
  2. Plug the included wireless transceiver into a compatible USB port on the computer. If the receiver is USB-C and the computer has only USB-A, use the supplied or model-approved USB-C-to-USB-A adapter.
  3. Turn on the headset. Wait for its indicator or voice prompt to show that it has connected to the receiver. Do not start Bluetooth pairing unless the instructions for your model specifically require it.
  4. In Windows, open Settings > System > Sound.
  5. Under the output device list, select the Razer headset. Set it as the default output if Windows has chosen speakers, a monitor, or another headset.
  6. Under input, select the Razer headset microphone and set it as the input device. Speak into the microphone and watch the input meter to confirm that Windows is receiving audio.
  7. Play a test sound, then check the headset’s physical volume control and any application-specific output setting.

Output and input are independent. Hearing game audio does not prove that the correct microphone is selected, and a working microphone does not prove that Windows is sending sound to the headset.

3.5 mm connection on a PC

Connect a combo 3.5 mm headset plug to a compatible combo audio port. Many laptops and some desktop cases combine headphone output and microphone input in one socket.

Desktop computers often have separate headphone and microphone ports. In that situation, use the splitter supplied for the headset, when applicable: connect the headset plug to the splitter, then connect the headphone and microphone branches to their matching PC sockets. Without the microphone branch connected, you may hear sound but have no voice input.

  1. Insert the plug fully into the combo port, or connect the appropriate splitter branches to the separate ports.
  2. Open Settings > System > Sound and choose the analog headset or the relevant motherboard audio device for output and input.
  3. Check the application’s own audio menu; games and chat programs can override the Windows default.
  4. Test playback and microphone input before joining a call or game.

Bluetooth on a PC

Pair over Bluetooth only when the exact Razer headset and the computer support that mode. Put the headset into its documented Bluetooth-pairing state, then open Settings > Bluetooth & devices, select Add device, choose Bluetooth, and select the headset name. After pairing, return to Settings > System > Sound and select the headset for both output and input.

Some models use different controls for Bluetooth and USB wireless. If the headset connects to Windows but produces no sound, confirm that it is in Bluetooth mode rather than waiting for a USB receiver that is not being used.

How to connect a Razer headset to PlayStation

USB wireless on PS5

For a model that lists PlayStation USB-wireless support, connect its included receiver to a supported USB port and power on the headset. A USB-C receiver may need a USB-C port or an appropriate adapter, depending on the console and the headset instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Insert the receiver into the PS5.
  2. Turn on the headset and wait for the wireless connection indicator.
  3. Open Settings > Sound.
  4. Set the headset as the output device and select its microphone as the input device if the console has not done so automatically.
  5. Use the sound controls to adjust output volume and microphone level. Speak and watch the input indicator to verify the mic.

USB wireless on PS4

After inserting the compatible receiver and powering on the headset, open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices. Choose the Razer headset for input and output, then test the microphone and adjust volume. Razer’s Kaira setup instructions use this menu path for PS4.

3.5 mm on PlayStation

Plug a compatible analog headset into the controller’s 3.5 mm jack. The controller and console handle volume and, where available, game/chat balance for this type of connection. If the console does not detect the microphone, remove and firmly reinsert the plug, then inspect the audio-device settings and the controller mute state.

How to connect a Razer headset to Xbox

First confirm Xbox wireless compatibility

Do not plug in a Razer USB wireless receiver and assume Xbox will accept it. The exact model and receiver mode determine compatibility. The Barracuda X Chroma product information explicitly states that Xbox wireless is not supported, so its USB receiver should not be presented as an Xbox solution.

Some Razer headsets licensed for Xbox use a receiver with a dedicated Xbox position. Razer’s BlackShark V3 Pro instructions say to toggle the HyperSpeed Wireless Gen-2 dongle to “XBOX” for an Xbox console; the same dongle uses “USB” mode for PC or PlayStation. A receiver left in USB mode can therefore appear not to work on Xbox even when the headset is an Xbox-compatible model.

Xbox wireless procedure for a compatible model

  1. Verify that the model’s official specifications list Xbox wireless support.
  2. Insert the supplied receiver into the Xbox-compatible USB port.
  3. Move the receiver’s mode switch to Xbox when the model provides separate Xbox and USB settings.
  4. Power on the headset and wait for the connection indicator.
  5. Open the Xbox audio settings and select the headset for output and microphone input if it is not selected automatically.
  6. Check the headset mute button, console volume, and game/chat mixer before testing voice chat.

Xbox support can differ between editions of a headset. Treat the model designation and the receiver’s mode as decisive rather than relying on a generic statement that the headset is “wireless.”

3.5 mm on Xbox

For a compatible analog headset, plug the 3.5 mm connector into an Xbox controller with a headset jack. The console or controller supplies the audio and microphone path, and its mixer controls handle volume or game/chat balance. If your controller has no 3.5 mm socket, an analog connection requires a compatible controller or approved audio accessory.

How to connect a Razer headset to Nintendo Switch

USB wireless

Razer lists certain Barracuda models for Nintendo Switch use with a USB receiver. Confirm that the precise headset, receiver and Switch configuration are listed together in the current product instructions; USB support on a different Razer model is not evidence of Switch compatibility.

  1. Put the compatible receiver into the Switch’s available USB connection, using the dock or the documented handheld adapter arrangement for that model.
  2. Power on the headset in USB-receiver mode.
  3. Wait for the receiver and headset indicators to confirm a link.
  4. Open the Switch audio controls, where available, and verify that the headset is being used. Some Switch configurations route audio automatically once a compatible USB device is detected.
  5. Test game audio and the microphone in a supported chat setup. Voice-chat behavior can depend on the game and Nintendo’s chat arrangement, not only on the headset.

Bluetooth and 3.5 mm on Switch

Use Bluetooth only if both the specific headset and your Switch configuration support it according to their current instructions. Do not assume that a headset’s Bluetooth support on a phone or PC carries over to Switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 3.5 mm headset can be connected to the Switch’s headphone jack when the console or game supports the required microphone path. Insert the plug fully and check the game’s voice-chat settings; analog headset behavior is controlled by the host device rather than by a USB receiver.

Choosing the right connection method

Use the following order when deciding how to connect:

  1. Platform support: eliminate any headset whose official compatibility list does not include your device.
  2. Supported mode: determine whether support applies to USB wireless, Bluetooth, 3.5 mm, or a particular receiver position.
  3. Microphone path: confirm that the selected connection carries microphone audio, not just playback.
  4. Accessories: identify whether you need a splitter, a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, or the supplied receiver.
  5. Practical preference: choose wired simplicity when you want plug-and-play reliability, or wireless freedom when the platform and model explicitly support it.
Priority Prefer USB wireless when… Prefer 3.5 mm when…
Compatibility The model’s receiver is listed for your exact platform Your controller or computer has a compatible analog jack
Setup You want a cable-free connection and can use the correct receiver mode You want to avoid pairing, charging and receiver troubleshooting
Desktop cabling Your PC has a free compatible USB port You have a combo jack, or a splitter for separate microphone and headphone ports
Xbox Your model is explicitly Xbox-wireless compatible and the dongle has the required Xbox mode Your controller has a 3.5 mm headset jack

Razer headset troubleshooting checklist

No sound

  • Confirm the headset is charged, powered on and in the intended mode.
  • Check the physical volume wheel or buttons, controller volume, console volume and application volume.
  • On PC, open Settings > System > Sound and select the Razer headset as output.
  • On PlayStation, choose the headset under the console’s sound or audio-device settings.
  • For a wireless setup, reseat the receiver and verify that the receiver’s switch is in the mode required by the platform.
  • For 3.5 mm, push the plug fully into the jack and test another compatible controller or device.

No microphone input

  • Make sure the headset and controller mute controls are not active.
  • On PC, select the Razer microphone as the input device and watch the Windows input meter while speaking.
  • On PlayStation or Xbox, select the headset microphone in audio settings and confirm the console’s chat-mixer level.
  • If using a desktop with separate audio sockets, connect the headset through the correct microphone/headphone splitter.
  • Reseat the 3.5 mm plug without pulling on the cable; a partially inserted connector can provide playback without reliable microphone contact.

Wireless receiver is not detected

  • Check that the receiver belongs to the headset and is intended for the platform.
  • Try another supported USB port and remove unnecessary hubs while testing.
  • Confirm the headset is not still connected to Bluetooth when you intend to use USB wireless.
  • For Xbox-licensed models, set the dongle to Xbox; for PC or PlayStation, use the documented USB position.
  • Power-cycle the headset and receiver, then repeat the model-specific pairing procedure.

It works on PC but not on a console

PC success proves only that the headset and that PC connection mode work together. Recheck the console support list, receiver type, USB adapter requirements and mode switch. This is especially important for Xbox, where a non-Xbox wireless model cannot be made compatible merely by changing Windows settings.

Accessories you may need

3.5 mm splitter

Buy or use a splitter only when the headset has a combined audio/microphone plug and the desktop provides separate headphone and microphone ports. It is unnecessary for a combo jack and does not add console compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

USB-C-to-USB-A adapter

This adapter is relevant when the headset’s supported receiver is USB-C but the computer or console offers USB-A. Use an adapter that fits securely and follow the headset’s instructions; an adapter cannot overcome a platform that does not support that receiver.

The included wireless receiver

Use the receiver supplied for the exact headset. A generic USB Bluetooth adapter is not a substitute for a proprietary wireless transceiver, and a receiver from another Razer family may not pair with your headset.

Final connection check

  1. Read the exact model and platform list.
  2. Choose the connection mode that the model and platform both support.
  3. Connect the included receiver or the correct analog plug and power on the headset.
  4. Select the headset for output and microphone input.
  5. Test playback, microphone input, mute and chat balance before starting a call or game.
  6. If it fails, troubleshoot compatibility and mode first, then ports, volume and software settings.

The dependable rule is simple: identify the model, match its documented connection mode to the platform, and configure input and output separately. That prevents the most common mistake—treating every USB, Bluetooth or wireless Razer headset as universally compatible.
