Connect your PS5 or Xbox Series X directly to a TV HDMI port that supports the features you want, select that input, and check what the console detects. A 4K TV label alone does not mean every HDMI port supports 4K at 120 Hz, HDR, VRR, or ALLM. Use the console’s included HDMI cable first, then verify the TV’s specific port and settings if a feature is missing.
Connect the console and select the right HDMI input
- Connect the console’s HDMI output directly to the TV. Start with the HDMI cable included with the console.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input you used.
- Check the TV manual for that exact input’s supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR, and ALLM. Some TVs reserve higher-bandwidth features for particular ports.
Sony recommends the included cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for relevant PS5 features. Xbox likewise recommends its included cable when troubleshooting. You do not need to buy another cable if the one supplied works; consider a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable only if the included cable is missing, damaged, or too short. Sony’s PS5 resolution guide and Xbox’s TV-readiness guide explain the cable and connection checks.

Enable the gaming features your setup supports
120 Hz and high frame rates
On PS5, 120 Hz Output enables 120 Hz output when the TV and game support it. Xbox Series X supports up to 120 FPS, but actual output depends on the game and the display connection. A 4K 120 Hz picture requires support from the console, TV, selected HDMI port, cable, and any equipment between them; check the exact port specification rather than assuming all inputs are equivalent. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X specifications list its headline display features.
HDR
On PS5, use the on-screen HDR adjustment. On When Supported leaves non-HDR content in SDR; Always On converts unsupported content to HDR output. To use HDR, the TV and the selected input must support it, and the connection path must pass it through.

VRR and ALLM
PS5’s VRR setting adjusts refresh rate in real time when supported by the TV and game; Sony notes that results vary by TV. ALLM can switch a compatible TV to a low-latency mode during gameplay. PS5 does not send an ALLM signal while a media app is running, and VRR output may trigger low-latency mode even if the ALLM setting is off. Xbox Series X also supports HDMI VRR and Auto Low Latency Mode, subject to the display and connection. HDMI describes VRR as reducing or eliminating lag, stutter, and tearing, and ALLM as automatically selecting a low-latency mode; those general feature descriptions do not establish support on a particular TV. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s feature description provides the general explanation.
Check the TV’s HDMI input mode
Some TVs require an enhanced, full-bandwidth, or manufacturer-specific input setting before 4K, HDR, or advanced gaming signals work. Xbox’s 2020 guide gives examples such as HDMI UHD Color, Enhanced format, and HDMI mode 2.1 for certain televisions. These are examples, not universal menu paths: labels and availability vary by model. Consult the TV manual for the exact input, and install available TV firmware updates because manufacturers may add capabilities through updates. Xbox’s TV-readiness guide covers these checks.

Troubleshoot missing 4K, HDR, or 120 Hz
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| 4K cannot be selected | Confirm the chosen port supports 4K and enable its enhanced input mode if required. Connect directly to the TV, update its firmware, and check the console’s capability screen. On PS5, set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p. See Sony’s guide and Xbox’s guide. |
| 4K at 120 Hz is unavailable or falls to 1080p at 120 Hz | Verify that both the TV and the selected port support 4K at 120 Hz. Update TV firmware, use the included or a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, and connect directly to the TV. On PS5, leave Video Transfer Rate at Auto unless troubleshooting requires a change. See Sony’s resolution guide. |
| HDR is unavailable | Verify HDR support for the TV and specific input, enable enhanced input mode if needed, update firmware, and check PS5’s HDMI-device information or Xbox’s 4K TV details. See Sony and Xbox. |
| PS5 picture flickers during 4K output | Sony suggests trying Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2. These settings limit some output formats, so use them only as a workaround and return the setting to Auto if the issue is resolved. See Sony’s guide. |
| A receiver, switch, or other intermediary may be blocking a feature | Temporarily connect the console directly to the TV with the console’s cable and check the detected capabilities again. Reconnect the intermediary only if it supports the required format. Xbox recommends a direct connection as a troubleshooting check: Xbox’s TV-readiness guide. |
What to compare when checking your TV’s gaming support
If you are assessing a TV you already own or considering a replacement, compare its specifications against the features you intend to use. Confirm each item for the model and port, not just the TV series or HDMI label.
- Native 4K resolution.
- Refresh rate, including whether a specific input supports 4K at 120 Hz.
- HDR support.
- VRR support and its stated operating range.
- ALLM support.
- How many HDMI ports support those features and where they are located.
HDMI 2.1 labeling by itself does not guarantee ALLM or mean every port supports every feature. Verify the exact port in the TV manual; Sony’s PS5 guide, Xbox’s TV guide, and HDMI’s feature description explain the relevant compatibility checks.
