You can connect a PS5 DualSense controller to a supported Windows PC or Mac either wirelessly over Bluetooth or with a USB cable. Use Create + PS to enter Bluetooth pairing mode, then select the controller in your computer’s Bluetooth menu. For USB, connect the controller with a compatible USB-C data cable. Sony lists Windows 10 (64-bit), Windows 11 and macOS Big Sur 11.3 or later as supported baselines, but whether every button or feature works still depends on the game and connection type.
What you need before connecting
The DualSense works with the following operating-system baselines identified in Sony’s support guidance:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Computer | Minimum version listed by Sony | Wireless requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11 | Built-in Bluetooth or a compatible Bluetooth adapter |
| Mac | macOS Big Sur 11.3 or later | Bluetooth enabled on the Mac |
For a wired connection, you need a USB cable with a USB Type-C connector at the controller. The connector at the computer can be USB-C or USB-A, depending on the port you plan to use. A cable that only carries power may charge the controller without creating a usable data connection; for computer pairing, use a cable that supports both data and charging.
Charge the controller enough to complete pairing, especially if you intend to use Bluetooth. Remove the cable before attempting Bluetooth pairing. A controller that is still connected by USB may not enter the wireless discovery state you expect.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Connect the DualSense over Bluetooth
These steps apply to a Windows PC and a Mac. The computer must have Bluetooth turned on, and the controller must not already be actively connected to another device.
- Turn the controller off. The player indicator should be dark. If it is lit, hold the PS button until the controller switches off.
- Disconnect the USB cable. Bluetooth pairing mode is entered without a cable attached.
- Start pairing mode. Hold the Create button, then hold the PS button. Keep both held until the light bar begins blinking.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the computer. Turn Bluetooth on and wait for the list of discoverable devices to refresh.
- Select the controller. Choose the DualSense from the discovered-device list. Do not select an unrelated device with a similar name.
- Confirm the connection. Pairing is complete when the light bar continues blinking and the player indicator lights up.
Windows Bluetooth path
Open Windows Settings and go to the Bluetooth device page, then choose the option to add a device and select Bluetooth. Leave that window open while the DualSense is blinking. If Windows asks you to confirm a pairing request, accept it only when the listed device is the controller you just placed in pairing mode.
Mac Bluetooth path
Open the Mac’s Bluetooth settings, turn Bluetooth on and select the DualSense when it appears. Apple uses the same Create-plus-PS combination for pairing. If macOS shows the controller as paired but not connected, press and release the PS button once; Apple identifies that as the action that completes the connection in this state.

Pairing again after changing computers
Sony says pairing is required when you change devices. A controller paired to a PC will not automatically transfer that active connection to a Mac. Put it back into pairing mode and select it on the new computer, or use the controller’s device-slot feature described below if you have already registered both devices.
Connect with a USB cable
USB is the simplest option when Bluetooth is unavailable, when you want a wired link, or when you need DualSense features that Sony ties to a wired PC connection.

- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
- Check the computer for an available USB-C or USB-A port.
- Plug the USB-C end of the cable into the controller.
- Plug the other end directly into the computer rather than into an unpowered hub while troubleshooting.
- Press the PS button if the controller does not wake automatically.
- Wait for the operating system to recognize the controller before launching or returning to a game.
On an Apple device, Apple specifies a cable that supports both data and charging for automatic pairing and connection. If the controller only charges, replace the cable with a known data-capable cable and try another computer port. The cable’s computer-side connector must match the port you actually have; USB-C at the controller does not mean the computer must also use USB-C.
Bluetooth or USB: which should you choose?
| Consideration | Bluetooth | USB |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | A cable-free desk or sofa setup | A dependable wired connection and USB-dependent features |
| Required hardware | Bluetooth on the computer | A compatible USB port and data-capable cable |
| Windows haptic feedback | Not the connection Sony specifies for supported-game haptics | Required when a supported Windows game exposes haptics |
| Headset jack | Not available through a wireless DualSense connection on PC or Mac | Requires the controller to be wired |
| Mobility | No cable between controller and computer | Controller remains tethered to the cable |
Choose Bluetooth when convenience matters and the game only needs ordinary controller input. Choose USB when you need supported haptic effects on Windows, want to use the controller’s headset jack on a PC or Mac, or are diagnosing a wireless connection problem. Sony does not publish a general latency or success-rate figure for either method, so there is no official number to use as a universal performance comparison.
Make sure the game supports the controller
A successful operating-system connection does not guarantee that every game will accept the DualSense. Sony explicitly warns that controller support can vary by game, even when the controller is connected to a PC.
For a Steam game, inspect the game’s store page for the controller-support label. “Full Controller Support” indicates the developer lists complete controller operation for the title; “Partial Controller Support” means some functions may require a keyboard, mouse or additional configuration. The label is a useful indication, not a promise that every DualSense-specific feature is exposed.
Start the game only after the controller appears as connected. If a title still shows keyboard prompts, look in that game’s input settings for a controller toggle or input-device selector. Some games accept standard button and stick input but do not implement adaptive triggers, haptics, the built-in microphone or the controller speaker.

Which DualSense features work on PC and Mac?
Feature availability is controlled by three factors: the game must implement the feature, the operating system must support it, and the connection method must meet Sony’s requirement. The same controller can therefore expose different capabilities on Windows, macOS and a PS5.
| Feature | Windows PC | Mac | Connection or support condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard buttons, sticks and triggers | Available in games that support the controller | Available in games that support the controller | Game support is required |
| Adaptive triggers | Only in games that implement them | Only where the game and platform expose them | Not automatic; support varies by game |
| Haptic feedback | Supported-game haptics require USB | Sony says haptic feedback is not compatible with Mac | Game support is also required |
| Built-in microphone and speaker | Available only when supported by the game | Sony says these are not compatible with Mac | Do not assume every Windows game exposes them |
| 3.5 mm headset jack | Requires a wired USB connection | Requires a wired USB connection | Mobile devices are not supported for this function |
Adaptive triggers are not a universal PC setting; a game has to program resistance effects. Sony also says adaptive triggers are not compatible with Android-based mobile devices, a limitation outside the Windows and Mac connection steps here.
Use the DualSense with up to four registered devices
Sony announced on July 23, 2025 that a DualSense can register up to four devices. This is useful if you alternate among a PS5, a Windows PC and a Mac instead of pairing from scratch every time.
Assign a device slot
Pair the controller with the device first. Sony’s slot combinations use the PS button together with one of the four action buttons:
| Slot | Assignment combination |
|---|---|
| 1 | PS + Triangle |
| 2 | PS + Circle |
| 3 | PS + Cross |
| 4 | PS + Square |
Use one combination while the controller is connected to the device you want to register. Keep the buttons held as directed by Sony until the device is assigned. Avoid assigning the same slot to a second device unless you intend to replace the previous entry.

Switch to a registered computer
- Turn on the computer you want to use and make sure its Bluetooth function is available, or connect it by USB if that is your chosen method.
- Hold PS and the action button for the device’s assigned slot for about three seconds.
- Watch the player indicator to confirm the selected slot.
If all four slots are occupied, Sony says assigning a new device replaces the least recently connected slot. Keep a note of your chosen button assignments if you regularly move between several devices.

The controller does not appear in Bluetooth
- Confirm the player indicator is dark before starting pairing mode. Hold PS to turn the controller off if necessary.
- Unplug the USB cable. A connected cable can prevent the pairing sequence from behaving as expected.
- Hold Create first, then hold PS until the light bar blinks. A brief press of PS alone only turns the controller on; it does not start discovery mode.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on in the computer’s settings, then refresh the discovered-device list.
- Move the controller close to the computer during pairing and temporarily turn off Bluetooth on nearby devices that might reconnect to it.
- If the controller was registered to another computer, use the four-device switching feature or remove the old Bluetooth entry before pairing again.
It says paired but not connected on a Mac
Press and release the PS button once, as Apple recommends for a controller that appears paired but is not currently connected. If that does not work, turn Bluetooth off and on, then select the DualSense again. Make sure the controller is not simultaneously connected to a PS5, phone or another computer.
USB charges but the computer does not detect the controller
- Replace the cable with one documented to support data and charging. Charge-only cables are a common cause of this symptom.
- Try a different USB port on the computer and connect directly rather than through a hub.
- Check that the USB-C plug is fully seated in the controller.
- On a Mac, follow Apple’s advice to install the latest controller and Apple-device software, then try Bluetooth if USB pairing still fails.
- On Windows, disconnect and reconnect the cable after the operating system is fully started, then press PS.
The game does not respond even though the computer sees the controller
Check the game’s own controller settings and its store-page support label. A game may recognize only one input device, may require controller support to be enabled, or may support standard controls without DualSense-specific effects. Close other games and controller-mapping utilities while testing so that another application does not capture the input first.
Haptics or the headset jack do not work
For Windows, connect the controller by USB when testing haptic feedback; Sony specifies a wired connection for supported-game haptics. Confirm that the game implements haptics. The controller’s headset jack also requires a wired connection on both PC and Mac. Sony says haptic feedback is not compatible with Mac, so changing from Bluetooth to USB on a Mac will not create the same haptic support Sony documents for Windows.

Turn off Bluetooth on devices you are not using, or select the intended registered slot with PS plus its assigned action button for about three seconds. If you have filled all four slots, register the desired device again; the least recently connected slot is the one Sony says will be replaced.

Update DualSense software and reset only as a last resort
Sony provides controller-device software updates through a Windows PC using the PlayStation Accessories app or through a PS5. Keeping the controller software current can resolve compatibility problems, but an update does not make an unsupported game support DualSense features.
If Apple displays a controller-firmware update message, follow Sony’s update instructions. Apple also recommends installing the latest software on the Apple device when USB pairing fails before switching to Bluetooth.
When the normal Bluetooth and USB checks do not resolve the problem, Sony advises resetting the controller. Use Sony’s reset procedure rather than improvising with the buttons or connector. If a reset does not restore connection, contact PlayStation Repairs for the next diagnostic step.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA quick decision checklist
- Is the computer running Windows 10 (64-bit), Windows 11 or macOS Big Sur 11.3 or later?
- Do you want a cable-free connection, or do you need Windows haptics and a wired headset jack?
- For Bluetooth, is the controller off, the cable removed and the light bar blinking after Create plus PS?
- For USB, does the cable carry data as well as power, and does its computer-side plug fit the available port?
- Does the specific game list full or partial controller support?
- Are you expecting a feature that depends on a particular platform, game or wired connection?
Once those conditions are satisfied, a DualSense can serve as a normal controller on a supported PC or Mac without a special subscription or paid pairing utility. The connection method gets the controller recognized; the game and platform determine how much of the DualSense feature set you actually receive.
