Short answer: You cannot pair a PS2 or PS3 controller directly with a PS5 through its normal controller setup. Sony says those controller generations are not compatible with PS5. A documented adapter route exists for a PS2 controller on PS3 or PS4, and Brook reports that a firmware update added support for PS4-format games on PS5. That adapter is now marked end of life, and the PS3-controller route to PS4 or PS5 is not verified by the available documentation.
Start by identifying the exact combination
“A newer PlayStation” can mean a PS3, PS4 or PS5, while “a PS2 or PS3 controller” can mean a wired DUALSHOCK 2, a wireless DUALSHOCK 3 or another controller made for that generation. Compatibility changes with both sides of the connection. Before buying a converter or trying to pair anything, write down these three details:

- Controller generation: PS2-era or PS3-era, and the exact model if it is printed on the back.
- Target console: PS3, PS4 or PS5.
- Software generation on a PS5: PS4-format software or PS5-format software.
The last item matters because Sony treats PS4-format and PS5-format games differently. A controller that can operate a PS4 game on PS5 is not automatically accepted by a PS5-format game.

This table reflects the documented combinations, not a promise that every third-party converter behaves the same way. A converter’s connector, firmware and supported controller list all matter.

Why the PS5 does not accept PS2 and PS3 controllers directly
Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide states: “Controllers intended for use with PlayStation®, PlayStation®2, and PlayStation®3 consoles, such as the analog controllers (DUALSHOCK® and DUALSHOCK®2) and the DUALSHOCK®3 wireless controller, are not compatible with the PS5 console.” That covers the two generations in this question, including the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller.
Consequently, the PS5’s ordinary accessory flow is not a workaround. Sony’s controller support page describes pairing procedures for current, supported controllers such as DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4. Following those procedures with an old PS2 or PS3 controller does not add compatibility that the console itself does not provide.
USB power is not the same as controller support. A cable may make a legacy controller light up or draw power without giving the console a usable input device. Bluetooth visibility, where applicable, also does not prove that the PS5 accepts the controller’s protocol.
Using a PS2 controller on PS3 or PS4 with the documented converter
What Brook actually documents
Brook’s page for the PS2 to PS3/PS4 Super Converter lists PS2 controllers as the input and PS3 or PS4 as target consoles. This is the specific adapter path supported by the available documentation. It should not be generalized to every PS2 accessory, every converter or a PS3 controller.

The same page is marked end of life. That means current stock, replacement support and firmware-download availability may not be the same as when the product was sold. No current price or retailer availability is established here, so check the manufacturer page and the seller’s return policy before spending money on old inventory.
Preparation checklist
- Confirm that your controller is a PS2 controller, not a DUALSHOCK 3. The converter’s name and documentation specify the direction of compatibility.
- Confirm whether the destination is PS3 or PS4. Do not assume that a PS4 listing applies to PS5.
- Read the converter’s current compatibility list for your exact controller model and console revision.
- Check whether the converter requires a firmware update and whether the official update files and instructions are still available.
- Keep the console’s original supported controller available for menus, setup and troubleshooting.
Connection procedure
- Verify the combination before connecting anything. Record “PS2 controller + PS3” or “PS2 controller + PS4,” rather than relying on a generic claim that an adapter works with PlayStation.
- Check the converter status and firmware. Brook’s page identifies the product as end of life. If you cannot obtain the documented firmware or the update utility safely, treat that as a compatibility risk instead of using an unverified download.
- Install any required update exactly as Brook specifies. Do not substitute firmware intended for another converter model. A failed update can leave an adapter unusable.
- Connect the PS2 controller and converter according to the converter’s labeling and manual. Use the ports and operating mode named by the manufacturer; the sources do not establish a universal cable order or button combination for every revision.
- Start with a simple test. Use the console’s menus or a known PS3/PS4 title and check directional input, face buttons, shoulder buttons, both sticks and the system button. A controller that operates menus but loses a particular function may have a feature limitation rather than a complete connection failure.
- Test the game you actually intend to play. Compatibility can differ between the console interface and a game, especially where a title expects functions that the original PS2 controller does not provide.
If the converter does not respond, disconnect it and return to the checklist rather than repeatedly pairing the controller. Confirm the exact model, recheck the firmware requirement and test with another supported PS2 controller only if the manufacturer’s documentation says that model is covered.
Using that PS2 adapter on a PS5: the important limitation
The documented PS5 case is PS4-format software
Brook says a firmware update dated 2020-11-04 added support for PS4 games on PS5. The wording is narrower than “PS2 controllers work on PS5”: it describes PS4-format games running on the newer console. It does not establish operation with PS5-format games, nor does it establish support for every PS2 controller.

A cautious PS5 workflow
- Confirm that the controller is PS2-era and that the converter is the Brook model covered by the documentation.
- Confirm that the converter has the firmware associated with the 2020-11-04 PS4-game support note, if Brook still provides it.
- Check the converter’s end-of-life status, seller return terms and exact compatibility list before purchase.
- Connect the controller and converter using Brook’s instructions, then test in a PS4-format game.
- Do not treat success in that game as evidence that a PS5-format title will accept the controller. Use a current supported controller for PS5-format software.
If any part of that chain is unavailable—especially the correct firmware or a documented compatibility list—the setup is not a dependable recommendation. The end-of-life label makes availability and long-term support a practical concern, even though the historical firmware note exists.
What about a PS3 DUALSHOCK 3?
The DUALSHOCK 3 is a separate controller generation from a PS2 DUALSHOCK 2. The cited Brook product is named for PS2 controllers and does not, by itself, establish support for DUALSHOCK 3. Do not plug a PS3 controller into that adapter and infer compatibility from the connector shape or from a report that a PS2 controller works.
For PS3-controller use on PS4 or PS5, no sufficiently verified route is established in the cited sources. That is an evidence boundary, not proof that no accessory exists anywhere. It means a reliable, documented recommendation cannot be made from the available information. Generic advice such as “connect it by USB and press the PS button” should not be presented as a supported PS4 or PS5 setup.

- An explicit statement that the input is a DUALSHOCK 3 or PS3 controller, not merely “PlayStation controller.”
- An explicit target listing for PS4 or PS5.
- A statement about PS4-format versus PS5-format software when the target is PS5.
- Current firmware files, update instructions and a compatibility list from the manufacturer.
- A return option in case the exact controller and console combination is not recognized.
Without those details, the safest conclusion is that the PS3-to-newer-PlayStation path remains unverified.

Sony’s safety guide separately says: “The DUALSHOCK®4 wireless controller is compatible with PlayStation®4 format software on the PS5™ console, but not with PS5™ format software on the PS5 console.” This statement concerns DUALSHOCK 4, a controller designed for PS4, and does not make DUALSHOCK 2 or DUALSHOCK 3 compatible.
That distinction explains why a DUALSHOCK 4 can be a practical choice for PS4-format games on PS5 while an older controller cannot simply be added through the same pairing screen. It also sets the correct expectation for game support: compatibility follows the software generation, not just the fact that the game launches on a PS5.
For current controller pairing instructions, use Sony’s official accessories support page. Its procedures apply to the supported controller families described there, not as a general conversion method for PS2 or PS3 hardware.

What to verify in a listing or manual
Third-party accessory descriptions often use broad phrases such as “works with PlayStation.” For this question, broad wording is inadequate. A useful listing should identify the controller generation, console generation and software limitation separately. Look for:
- The exact controller input: PS2, DUALSHOCK 2 or PS3/DUALSHOCK 3.
- The exact target: PS3, PS4 or PS5.
- Whether the connection is wired through an adapter or a native wireless pairing process.
- Firmware version or update date, especially for the PS5 PS4-game case.
- Any restrictions on PS5-format software, motion features, pressure-sensitive inputs or system-menu access.
- Whether the product is current, discontinued or end of life, and how returns are handled.
If a listing leaves one of these fields blank, treat the omission as unresolved compatibility rather than filling it in from another adapter’s specifications.
Bottom line for each controller and console
A PS2 or PS3 controller is not a native PS5 accessory. For PS2 hardware, a specific Brook converter is documented for PS3 and PS4, with a firmware note for PS4-format games on PS5; its end-of-life status means you must verify availability and support before purchase. For a PS3 DUALSHOCK 3 on PS4 or PS5, the available documentation does not provide a verified setup, so generic USB or Bluetooth pairing instructions would be misleading. Match the controller generation, adapter model, console and game format as one complete combination.
