To connect your phone to a Bluetooth speaker, turn on the speaker, put it into its model-specific pairing mode, open Bluetooth in your phone’s Settings, and tap the speaker’s name. A tone, steady light, or “Connected” status confirms the link. If the speaker does not appear, check power, distance, pairing mode, competing connections, and saved Bluetooth entries before attempting a reset.
The reliable three-minute method
- Turn on the speaker and activate Bluetooth pairing or discoverable mode. The button may require a press, a long hold, or a dedicated control; indicators differ by model.
- Open your phone’s Bluetooth settings and switch Bluetooth on.
- Select the speaker’s displayed name under available devices, wait for the connection confirmation, then play a short clip and verify that audio is routed to the speaker.
Those steps apply to most phones and portable speakers, but no single button sequence works for every model. For example, instructions for the Bose SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen) say to hold its Bluetooth button until the light blinks blue, while another speaker may use a quick press or a different light pattern. If your speaker’s control does not behave this way, use its own manual. Sony’s model instructions also emphasize entering pairing mode before selecting the speaker on the phone: Sony Bluetooth speaker connection instructions.

Pairing and connecting are different
Pairing is the one-time process in which the phone and speaker exchange and save identification information. Connecting is the active Bluetooth link that carries sound. A phone can remember a speaker without currently sending audio to it. JBL describes this distinction in its support guidance: remembered devices still need to connect before playback.
| Situation | What you do | What can stop it |
|---|---|---|
| New pairing | Put the speaker in discoverable mode, then select its name in the phone’s available-device list. | The speaker is not in pairing mode, is already controlled by another phone, or is too far away. |
| Reconnection | Tap the speaker’s saved entry in Bluetooth settings. | The speaker is off, another device has taken the connection, or saved pairing data is stale. |
| Playback | Choose the speaker as the current audio output and start media. | Audio remains routed to the phone, the app uses a different output, or one device is muted. |
Before you start: make the connection easy
- Charge both devices. A low speaker battery can prevent discovery or cause an immediate disconnect.
- Keep them close. Huawei’s guidance for the listed speaker products is to keep the phone and speaker less than 10 metres apart. Treat that as model-specific guidance, not a universal guaranteed Bluetooth range: Huawei Bluetooth speaker troubleshooting.
- Temporarily stop nearby Bluetooth devices. Earbuds, laptops, tablets, and another phone may automatically reclaim the speaker.
- Move away from likely interference. Test away from crowded wireless equipment, metal enclosures, and USB 3 devices if discovery is unreliable.
- Know the speaker’s name. It may appear as a model number rather than the retail name. Selecting a similarly named device can pair the wrong product.
Connect an iPhone
Pair a speaker for the first time
- Press the speaker’s Bluetooth or pairing control. Hold it only as long as the speaker’s instructions specify. A flashing blue light, pairing tone, or voice prompt usually indicates discoverable mode.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Turn Bluetooth on if it is off. Remain on this screen while the phone scans.
- Under the available-devices list, tap the speaker’s name. If the speaker requests a code, use the code supplied by its manual; do not guess combinations repeatedly.
- Wait for the entry to move to the connected section or show a connected status. Listen for the speaker’s confirmation tone or check its indicator.
- Play a short clip. If the sound still comes from the iPhone, open the app’s output control or the iPhone’s current audio-output picker and select the speaker. The exact control can vary by iOS version and app.
Reconnect a previously paired speaker
Turn on the speaker, then go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap its saved name. The iPhone may reconnect automatically when the speaker is available, but automatic reconnection is not guaranteed. If the saved entry shows “Not Connected,” tap it once and wait several seconds before trying again.

Connect an Android phone
Pair a speaker for the first time
- Activate pairing mode on the speaker and leave it close to the phone.
- Open the phone’s Settings and find Bluetooth. Depending on the manufacturer and Android version, the path may be Settings > Connected devices, Settings > Connections, or a menu simply labeled Bluetooth.
- Switch Bluetooth on, then choose Pair new device, Available devices, or the equivalent scan command.
- Tap the speaker’s name. Confirm any pairing request and wait for a connected status or speaker confirmation sound.
- Start audio and check the phone’s media-output selector if playback remains on the handset. Android manufacturers place this selector in different locations, so use the controls shown by your phone’s current software.
Reconnect a saved speaker
Open the same Bluetooth screen and tap the speaker under saved or previously connected devices. If it refuses to connect, check whether another phone is using it. Some speakers permit several phones to remain paired, while only one can actively play at a time; others permit only one active phone. Disconnect the other phone or switch off its Bluetooth temporarily.
How to confirm that the connection really works
A Bluetooth label alone does not prove that an app is sending audio to the speaker. Confirm all three layers:
- Phone status: the speaker appears as connected in Bluetooth settings.
- Speaker feedback: its light changes to the connected pattern, or it plays a connection tone.
- Real playback: a short clip is audible from the speaker, with volume raised on both devices.
Test a second app if the first one is silent. Some apps retain an earlier output choice, and a call, navigation session, or wired accessory can temporarily claim audio. The precise output menu is phone- and app-dependent; there is no universal route-selection screen that looks identical on every iPhone or Android device.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy the speaker does not appear in Bluetooth
1. Pairing mode was not activated
Powering on is not always enough. A speaker can be on and still hidden from new devices because it is waiting to reconnect to a previous phone. Press or hold its Bluetooth control until the model’s pairing indicator appears. If the light pattern does not match the manual, repeat the action after switching the speaker off and on.
2. Another device is occupying it
Check nearby phones, tablets, and computers. Turn Bluetooth off on those devices for a moment, or disconnect the speaker from their Bluetooth menus. Then put the speaker back into pairing mode and scan again.

3. The devices are too far apart or underpowered
Place the phone within arm’s reach for the initial pairing and connect the speaker to power or charge it. Huawei specifies less than 10 metres for the products covered by its support article, but the practical range depends on the speaker, phone, obstacles, and interference.
4. The phone’s Bluetooth scan is stuck
- Turn Bluetooth off in Settings, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it on again.
- Restart the speaker.
- Restart the phone.
- Return the speaker to pairing mode and scan from the Bluetooth settings page rather than from a quick-settings shortcut.
This sequence refreshes the radio without erasing saved pairings.
5. Wireless interference is masking the discovery
Move both devices away from routers, laptops with many active radios, metal cabinets, and dense groups of wireless accessories. If discovery works in a different room, interference or physical obstruction is more likely than a damaged speaker.
It paired before but will not reconnect
Use the saved entry first
Open Bluetooth settings and tap the speaker’s saved name. Give the connection several seconds. Do not immediately create a second entry; duplicate records can make it harder to identify which one is active.
Find the phone that connected last
Turn off Bluetooth on other devices that have used the speaker. A speaker may reconnect silently to a nearby tablet or laptop before your phone can claim it. Product behavior varies: some models let several phones remain paired, while others maintain one active connection.

Remove and recreate a stale pairing
- In the phone’s Bluetooth settings, open the speaker entry and choose Forget, Remove, or Unpair.
- Switch the speaker off, then on again.
- Activate its pairing mode.
- Scan from the phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the speaker as a new device.
Sony provides separate iPhone and Android reconnection steps for this type of failure in its support article: Sony guidance for a speaker that no longer reconnects. Removing a phone entry does not reset every other device’s record; repeat the process on any phone that still tries to connect incorrectly.

The phone says connected, but there is no sound
Check output routing
Start a clip and open the phone’s current media-output control. Select the speaker rather than the handset, wired headphones, a car system, or another Bluetooth accessory. Because iOS, Android, and individual apps use different labels, follow the controls displayed by your phone.
Check both volume controls
- Raise the phone’s media volume, not just its ringtone volume.
- Raise the speaker’s physical volume and confirm it is not muted.
- Pause and resume the clip after changing output; some apps do not switch routes mid-stream.
Test another source
Play a local recording or a different app. If every source is silent, the problem is probably output selection, volume, or the Bluetooth link. If only one app is silent, inspect that app’s own output or casting controls.
Reconnect cleanly
Pause playback, disconnect the speaker in Bluetooth settings, wait a few seconds, and reconnect. Confirm the speaker’s indicator or tone before trying audio again. If the phone repeatedly reports connected while the speaker gives no connection confirmation, forget the entry and pair again.
When compatibility is the real issue
Most modern phones and speakers support common Bluetooth music profiles, but compatibility is not guaranteed solely by seeing a Bluetooth logo. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance for its described connection scenario requires the source device to support sending audio with the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP): Sony Bluetooth pairing and compatibility guidance. This is a model-specific condition, not a universal statement that every product pair has identical requirements.

Check the exact phone and speaker specifications when:
- Neither device discovers the other after power, distance, pairing-mode, and restart checks.
- The speaker pairs with one phone but not another.
- The phone supports Bluetooth connections but exposes no music-audio option.
- The speaker is designed for a specialised profile rather than ordinary media playback.
Install official firmware or system updates only through the device maker’s documented process. Do not assume an update will preserve pairing records; note your saved devices first if the manufacturer warns that records may be cleared.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Factory reset: a last resort
Reset only after the simpler steps fail and you have confirmed the exact model’s reset procedure. A reset can erase every saved phone, not just the one causing trouble. JBL’s warning is explicit: “Resetting erases all pairings to all phones.” Afterward, every user must pair again.
- Read the speaker’s manual or official support page for the precise button combination.
- Disconnect or switch off nearby phones so they cannot immediately reclaim the speaker.
- Perform the reset and wait for the speaker to restart.
- Delete the old speaker entry from each phone that still lists it.
- Put the speaker in pairing mode and create a fresh connection.
Never guess a reset combination from a different model. Similar-looking speakers can use different controls, and an incorrect sequence may change another setting instead of clearing pairings.

Model-specific behaviors worth knowing
| Example or guidance | What it establishes | How to apply it safely |
|---|---|---|
| Bose SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen), sold from 2024 | Its instructions use a Bluetooth-button hold until the light blinks blue; Bose says this model can store up to six paired devices. | Use the light pattern and capacity only for this model, not as a rule for every speaker. Official instructions: Bose SoundLink Flex pairing support. |
| Huawei listed speaker products | Huawei advises keeping the phone and speaker less than 10 metres apart during troubleshooting. | Use close-range testing first; do not present 10 metres as a guaranteed range for another product. |
| Sony SRS-XB20 support scenario | Pairing starts on the speaker and finishes by selecting its name in the phone’s Bluetooth list. | Follow the SRS-XB20 indicator and button instructions if you own that model; other speakers may differ. |
| JBL reset guidance | A factory reset removes all phone pairings for the affected speaker. | Back up or note important device relationships before resetting, then pair every phone again. |
A decision tree for persistent failures
- Does the speaker power on? If not, charge it, try another charging cable or adapter approved for the model, and inspect its power indicator.
- Is it visibly or audibly in pairing mode? If not, repeat the model-specific Bluetooth-button sequence.
- Does the phone see the speaker? If no, move closer, disable competing devices, toggle Bluetooth, and restart both devices.
- Does tapping the entry produce a connection? If no, forget the saved entry and pair again.
- Does another phone connect? If yes, investigate the first phone’s saved records, software, or supported audio profiles.
- Does the phone show connected but playback fail? Select the speaker as output, raise both volumes, and test another app.
- Does nothing work on any compatible phone? Check official compatibility information and then consider the model’s documented factory reset or service options.
How to prevent the next pairing problem
- Give the speaker a distinctive name if its app or settings allow it, so you do not select a neighbour’s device.
- Disconnect from a phone before lending the speaker to someone else; this reduces accidental automatic reconnection.
- Keep the speaker charged if you expect it to reconnect automatically.
- When moving between several phones, connect deliberately from the saved Bluetooth entry instead of repeatedly creating new pairings.
- Record the model number and keep its official manual available. Pairing controls, indicator meanings, stored-device limits, and reset procedures are model-specific.
Should you replace the speaker?
A new speaker is not required to solve an ordinary pairing failure. Replacement becomes reasonable only when the speaker cannot enter pairing mode, fails with multiple known-compatible phones after a documented reset, has a damaged Bluetooth control, or no longer holds a charge. If you are shopping, compare the clarity of pairing indicators, the physical pairing control, stored-device behavior, compatibility with your phone, size, and price. The Bose SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen) is one example with documented iPhone and Android pairing instructions, not a universal recommendation or a tested “best” choice.
