The exact setup depends on the router model. If you only need a few devices online, connecting them directly to the phone’s hotspot is simpler and requires no router.
Check that your router supports the connection you want
A router needs a supported way to use the phone as its internet source. Look in the manual for Wi-Fi uplink options such as WISP, Hotspot, or Public Wi-Fi, or for USB tethering. Names and available modes differ by model; TP-Link notes that some models may not support every mode described in its operation-mode guide.

- Hotspot/WISP or Public Wi-Fi: The router joins the phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot as its upstream connection and shares the internet with devices connected to the router. ASUS describes WISP as using one Wi-Fi connection as WAN while serving wired and wireless clients.
- Repeater or range extender: Intended to extend an existing Wi-Fi network. Whether it creates a separate local network varies, so check the model’s documentation rather than assuming it behaves like WISP.
- Client mode: Can connect wired equipment to Wi-Fi through the router, but may not create the separate Wi-Fi network you want.
- USB tethering: Connects the phone to the router by USB. Both devices must support this feature; a USB port alone does not establish support.
- Access point mode: Shares a wired upstream connection over Wi-Fi, so it is not the mode for receiving a phone hotspot.
For a multi-device Wi-Fi setup, choose a mode that explicitly says it shares the upstream connection with the router’s own clients. If the manual does not confirm that feature, use the phone hotspot directly or select a router with documented support.
Connect the phone hotspot over Wi-Fi
These are general steps; router menus vary. Follow the manual for your exact model if its labels or setup flow differ.

- Turn on the phone’s hotspot. Note its Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password. On Android, Google’s instructions describe enabling the hotspot and selecting its name on the device you want to connect.
- Connect a setup device to the router. Join the router’s setup Wi-Fi or connect a computer to its Ethernet port.
- Open the router’s management page. Use the address or app stated in the router manual. For example, TP-Link’s guide uses
tplinkwifi.netor, on certain models,192.168.0.1; ASUS documents using its router URL or LAN IP. These are vendor-specific examples, not universal addresses. - Select the Wi-Fi uplink mode. Choose the router’s WISP, Hotspot, Public Wi-Fi, or equivalent mode, then scan for networks and select your phone’s hotspot.
- Enter the hotspot password. Set the router’s local Wi-Fi name and password if prompted, then apply the configuration. This local network is what your other devices will join.
- Reconnect and test. If you changed the router’s local Wi-Fi details, reconnect your setup device using the new name and password. Join the router’s local network with another device and check that the router reports an internet connection.
Connect by USB tethering instead
Use USB only when the phone and the router’s documentation both support USB tethering. On Android, connect the phone to the router with a USB cable, open the phone’s hotspot or tethering controls, and enable USB tethering. The router then uses the phone’s connection if that model supports the feature.
Google’s Android guidance says Mac computers cannot tether to Android by USB. It also warns that some carriers limit tethering or charge extra. Check your plan before relying on either connection method.

Fix common connection problems
The router cannot find the phone hotspot
- Confirm the phone hotspot is on and the router is scanning in a Wi-Fi uplink mode.
- Check whether the router supports the hotspot’s Wi-Fi band and channel. A network can be missing from the scan list if the router does not support its channel.
- For an iPhone Personal Hotspot that a GL.iNet router cannot find, GL.iNet’s manual advises keeping the iPhone screen unlocked while searching.
- On iPhone 12 or later, try Settings > Personal Hotspot > Maximize Compatibility. Apple says this turns off 5 GHz (and 6 GHz, if applicable), limits the hotspot to 2.4 GHz, and enforces WPA2 Personal. This may help a router that cannot use the hotspot’s default band or security mode.
The router sees the hotspot but will not connect
Re-enter the hotspot password and check that the router supports its security mode. Apple says iPhone Personal Hotspot uses WPA2/WPA3 Personal by default; Maximize Compatibility changes it to WPA2 Personal and 2.4 GHz on supported iPhone models.

The router connects, but devices have no internet
- Check that the phone itself has mobile data access and that the carrier plan allows tethering.
- Confirm the router’s status page shows an upstream connection, then reconnect a client to the router’s local Wi-Fi.
- Some public Wi-Fi networks require a captive-portal sign-in or periodic reauthentication. ASUS documents cases where a portal may still appear on a second device and suggests MAC cloning as a possible troubleshooting step. Its guide also notes that some public hotspot connections renew every 24 hours; this should not be assumed to apply to a phone hotspot.
The router’s setup page stops responding after configuration
If applying settings changed the router’s local Wi-Fi name or password, your setup device may have been disconnected. Join the router again using the new local network details, then reopen its management page.

Choose between a router and direct hotspot connections
Connecting devices directly to the phone is the simplest option when you do not need a separate router network or wired connections. Google says Android phone Wi-Fi hotspots can share with up to 10 other devices. That is Google’s stated phone hotspot limit—not a promise about a router’s client capacity or a carrier’s tethering rules.
A compatible travel router is useful when you want several devices on the router’s local network or need to connect wired clients. For example, TP-Link documents Hotspot/WISP setup for the TL-WR902AC. Before buying any model, verify its exact hardware revision and firmware, supported bands and security, and whether it supports the specific Wi-Fi uplink or USB tethering method you plan to use.

Secure both wireless networks
Set a strong password for the phone hotspot and for the router’s local Wi-Fi. Google documents that Android hotspot security can be set to “None”; avoid an open hotspot unless you deliberately accept that nearby people may be able to join. Apple says Personal Hotspot supports WPA2/WPA3 Personal by default and uses a system-suggested secure random password.

A WISP setup can create a separate local network, but isolation and firewall behavior depend on the router’s implementation and settings. The mode name alone does not establish anonymity, VPN protection, or complete isolation.
