But joining a network will not restore online multiplayer or other discontinued online features. To set up Wi-Fi, open System Settings → Internet Settings → Connection Settings, configure a connection, then run the test.
Connect your Nintendo 3DS to Wi-Fi
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Internet Settings, then Connection Settings.
- Choose an available connection slot and start a new connection setup.
- Choose a detected access point, or enter the network information manually. Enter the Wi-Fi password if prompted.
- Save the settings and run the connection test.
Menu wording can vary slightly by model or system software. Nintendo’s 3DS Operations Manual says the system needs a wireless Internet connection and supports 802.11b/g. That does not establish that every current router or security configuration will work, so check your access point’s compatibility rather than assuming it will connect.

What Wi-Fi can—and cannot—do now
Nintendo ended online play and other functionality using online communication for Nintendo 3DS software at 5 p.m. PDT on April 8, 2024, including New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive software. That included online cooperative play, Internet rankings, and data distribution. Offline modes remain usable. Nintendo’s service announcement listed Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter as exceptions at the time, while noting that those services could also end in the future.
Nintendo says software updates and redownloads of previously purchased software and downloadable content remain available for the foreseeable future. This does not include new purchases: Nintendo ended Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases and downloads of free content, including demos, on March 27, 2023, at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. StreetPass and SpotPass are different
StreetPass uses local communication between nearby 3DS-family systems and remains available. SpotPass relies on online communication, and its features are no longer available, according to Nintendo’s service announcement.

Troubleshoot connection problems
- The 3DS cannot find or join your network: Confirm that another device can access the Internet on the same network, re-enter the password, and move the console closer to the access point. These checks can identify common setup issues, but there is no single fix established for every connection error.
- A public hotspot asks you to sign in through a web page: Nintendo says hotspots that require browser-based account setup, agreement acceptance, or password entry cannot provide Internet access to the 3DS. Try a network without that captive-portal step; see Nintendo’s hotspot error guidance.
- A game shows error 002-0110 or says its service was discontinued: Nintendo defines this as the online service for that game or application no longer being available. Changing Wi-Fi settings will not restore it. See Nintendo’s error-code explanation.
- An eShop purchase or free download is unavailable: New purchases and free-content downloads have ended. Previously purchased content redownloads and software updates remain available for the foreseeable future, according to Nintendo’s eShop notice and online-service announcement.
