To use a mini PC on a television, connect the PC’s video output to an HDMI input on the TV, select that input, and choose the appropriate Windows display mode. HDMI is usually the simplest route because it can carry both picture and sound. After the connection works, use Windows display settings to select a supported resolution and refresh rate, enable HDR only if every device in the chain supports it, and connect a compatible controller for comfortable couch play.
The exact result depends on the mini PC’s graphics hardware, memory, cooling, game, cable or adapter, and the TV model. “Mini PC” is a form factor, not a performance specification, so no universal frame rate or console-equivalent experience can be promised.

What you need before connecting the mini PC
Check the physical ports
Look for an HDMI output on the mini PC and an HDMI input on the television. If both are present, use them first. Microsoft explains that external-display capability depends on the device model and the cables or video adapters being used; its guidance is written for Surface devices, but the compatibility principle also applies when checking a mini PC. See Microsoft’s external-display guidance.
- Mini PC: identify the video-output port, such as HDMI or a USB-C port with display support.
- TV: identify an available HDMI input and note its label, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
- Cable or adapter: make sure the entire connection path supports the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use. A connector shape alone does not guarantee a particular display mode.
Decide which display mode you want
If the TV will be your only screen, Windows’ Second screen only mode is the cleanest arrangement. If the mini PC remains connected to a monitor, you can duplicate the image on both screens or extend the desktop. These choices are available through the Windows+P shortcut.

Check the TV’s supported modes
TV specifications vary by model and input. Before choosing 4K, a high refresh rate, or HDR, check the television manual and the mini PC specifications. The selected mode must be supported by the PC, the cable or adapter path, and the specific TV input.
Plan the cable and adapter path
Think of the connection as one chain: mini PC output, cable or adapter, TV input, and the display mode selected in Windows. Every link has to report support for the mode you want. A cable that fits physically may still fail to expose a desired resolution, refresh rate, or HDR option. Compare the actual port labels and specifications on your two devices before ordering anything.
- If HDMI is available on the mini PC, a direct HDMI-to-HDMI connection has the fewest variables.
- If you need an adapter, verify both the source port’s output capability and the adapter’s supported signal. Do not choose solely by connector appearance.
- Write down which TV input you used. Some televisions expose different capabilities on different HDMI inputs, so the manual’s input-specific notes matter.
- Keep the mini PC positioned so the cable is not sharply bent or pulling on the port. If you move the computer between a desk monitor and the TV, label each cable and input to avoid reconnecting to the wrong socket.
Connection methods compared
| Method | What it requires | When to choose it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI cable | HDMI output on the mini PC, HDMI input on the TV, and a cable that supports the intended mode | First choice for a direct living-room setup | Capability depends on the ports, cable, and TV mode; no single cable specification is universal for every mini PC and TV |
| USB-C to HDMI | A USB-C port that supports display output, plus a compatible cable or adapter and the TV’s HDMI input | When the mini PC has no usable HDMI output | USB-C describes the connector, not guaranteed video capability; some USB-C ports are data- or charging-only |
| Wireless display adapter | A compatible adapter connected to the TV’s HDMI port and powered as its instructions require | When a cable run is impractical | The available guidance does not establish wireless latency or suitability for latency-sensitive gaming |
How to connect a mini PC to a TV with HDMI
- Shut down or suspend the mini PC if convenient. This is not normally required for HDMI, but it makes it easier to inspect ports and avoid selecting the wrong connector.
- Plug the HDMI cable into the mini PC’s HDMI output. Do not force the plug. If the PC has more than one video output, use the port identified in its manual as an output.
- Plug the other end into an HDMI input on the TV. Record the input number or name.
- Turn on the TV and select that input. Use the remote’s Input, Source, or similarly named control. Labels differ by manufacturer, so consult the television manual if the HDMI port does not appear.
- Start the mini PC and sign in to Windows. If the desktop does not appear, use the troubleshooting section below before changing advanced settings.
- Choose the Windows screen arrangement. Press Windows+P, then select Second screen only, Duplicate, or Extend. Microsoft documents these display choices in its Windows multiple-monitor instructions.
Confirm that Windows sees the television
After signing in, open Settings > System > Display. The TV should appear as a selectable display. If more than one screen is listed, click the diagram or display entry that corresponds to the TV before changing resolution, refresh rate, or HDR. This prevents changing the desk monitor by mistake.

Select the right projection mode
| Windows+P choice | Result | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Second screen only | Windows uses the TV and turns off the other connected display | A dedicated TV gaming setup |
| Duplicate | The same image appears on the TV and another display | Showing the same game or presentation in two places |
| Extend | The TV becomes an additional desktop area | Keeping a monitor for other tasks while using the TV separately |
Duplicate mode can be convenient while testing, but the two displays still need a common supported mode. If one screen cannot use the selected resolution or refresh rate, Windows may limit the choices. For a TV-only arrangement, Second screen only avoids that extra constraint.
Choose a supported resolution and refresh rate
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select the TV if more than one display is shown.
- Open Advanced display to inspect the available resolution and refresh-rate choices.
- Choose a mode listed as supported by Windows and by the TV. If a mode causes a blank screen or instability, return to a previously working setting.
The available choices are determined by the mini PC’s graphics output, the cable or adapter, and the TV input. Do not assume that a TV’s advertised maximum resolution or refresh rate is available through every input or every cable path. A higher setting is useful only when the mini PC can render the game consistently at that setting.
Send sound to the TV
HDMI can carry audio as well as video. In Windows, open the sound output controls and select the TV or the intended audio device. If the TV is visible as a display but silent, check that Windows has not retained the mini PC’s speakers or a headset as the active output, then check the TV’s volume and mute state.

Using USB-C instead of HDMI
USB-C is a connector format, not a promise that video will work. The mini PC’s specific USB-C port must support a display alternate mode, and the cable or adapter must also support the required signal. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance explains why identical-looking USB-C ports can have different capabilities.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Verify the port before buying an adapter
- Read the mini PC manufacturer’s port specification for terms such as display output, DisplayPort over USB-C, or alternate mode.
- Do not infer video support from a USB-C port’s ability to charge devices or transfer data.
- Confirm that the adapter and its cable support the resolution and refresh rate you want.
- Connect the adapter to the mini PC, connect HDMI from the adapter to the TV, select the TV input, and then use Windows+P.
If Windows never detects the TV, the USB-C port may not provide video, the adapter may be incompatible, or the cable path may not support the selected mode. Test the mini PC’s native HDMI output, if it has one, to separate a Windows problem from a USB-C limitation. If the native output works, revisit the USB-C port specification and adapter requirements rather than assuming Windows is at fault.
Using a wireless display adapter
A wireless display adapter can provide an alternative to a long HDMI cable. Connect the adapter to an HDMI input on the TV and power its USB connector as the adapter instructions specify. Then press Windows+K on the mini PC and select the available wireless display device. Microsoft describes this process in its wireless display adapter instructions.
This route may be useful when running a cable is difficult, but the reviewed guidance does not measure latency or establish that wireless display is appropriate for fast, timing-sensitive games. For competitive or latency-sensitive play, test responsiveness in your own room and network conditions rather than assuming it will match a direct cable. Keep a direct HDMI option available if wireless behavior is inconsistent.
Understand resolution, refresh rate, and HDR together
Resolution describes the image mode Windows sends, while refresh rate describes how often that mode can update. The practical choice is the combination that the mini PC can render, the connection can transport, and the TV input can accept. The highest value shown on the TV’s marketing page is not automatically available from every HDMI socket or through every adapter.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHDR is a separate capability. Windows HDR requires compatible hardware in both the PC and the display, and the connection path and game must also handle HDR for it to affect gameplay. - Connect the TV and select it in Settings > System > Display.
- Open the HDR controls for that display.
- Turn HDR on only if the mini PC, connection path, TV, and game meet their respective requirements.
- If colors look washed out, the image flickers, or HDR is unavailable, turn it off and verify compatibility at each point in the chain.
HDR is not a substitute for graphics performance. A mini PC still needs enough graphics capability, memory, cooling, and game-specific support to render a game at the chosen resolution and settings.
Can a mini PC connected to a TV run games?
Yes, provided the mini PC meets the game’s requirements and the TV connection is configured correctly. The phrase “mini PC” does not identify a particular processor, graphics solution, memory capacity, or thermal design, so performance must be checked for the exact model and game.
Check these specifications first
- Graphics hardware: identify the integrated or discrete GPU and compare it with the game’s minimum and recommended requirements.
- Memory: verify the installed RAM and the game’s requirement. Integrated graphics may also share system memory.
- Cooling and sustained power: small enclosures can have model-specific thermal limits; consult the manufacturer’s specifications and reviews for the exact unit.
- Storage: leave enough free space for the game and updates.
- TV mode: choose a resolution and refresh rate the PC can render consistently and the TV can accept.
Tune the game after the connection works
- Start with the game’s recommended or automatic graphics preset.
- Use the TV’s supported resolution rather than forcing an unsupported output.
- If play is not smooth, lower demanding settings such as resolution scale, shadows, reflections, or effects before changing the Windows display mode.
- Test a short session with the TV in its intended picture mode and the mini PC in its normal location, because heat and power behavior can differ from a brief desktop test.
No authoritative benchmark in the available documentation establishes a universal frame rate, input latency, or “console-like” result for an unspecified mini PC. Use the exact model, game requirements, and your selected settings to make the performance decision. A result that is comfortable for a slower-paced game may not be suitable for a timing-sensitive title, so evaluate the games you actually plan to play.

Choose a controller for couch gaming
A keyboard and mouse can work, but a PC-compatible game controller is often more comfortable from a sofa. Confirm that the controller is supported by the operating system and by the particular game. Compatibility varies, and the cited setup guidance does not document a pairing procedure for a specific controller.
- For a wired controller, connect it to the mini PC and wait for Windows to recognize it before launching the game.
- For a wireless controller, follow that controller’s own pairing instructions, then verify that Windows and the game detect it.
- Keep a keyboard and mouse available for Windows settings, launchers, and games that do not support controller input.
- If a game ignores the controller, check the game’s input settings and confirm that Windows lists the device before changing display settings.
Make the setup easy to repeat
Once the TV works, note the HDMI input name, the Windows projection choice, and the display mode that was stable. That record makes it easier to restore the arrangement after the mini PC has been used with another monitor. If you switch between displays, use Windows+P first, then select the display in Settings before changing Advanced display options.
Keep the TV remote nearby for Input, Source, volume, and mute controls. Keep the mini PC’s keyboard available for sign-in, game launchers, and recovery if the controller is not recognized. These small preparations avoid treating every session as a new installation.

Troubleshoot common problems
The TV says “No signal”
- Confirm the HDMI cable is connected to the mini PC’s output, not a second input or output.
- Use the TV’s Input or Source control to select the exact HDMI port in use.
- Press Windows+P and select a display mode.
- Try a lower, known-supported resolution or refresh rate through Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- If you are using USB-C, verify that the port supports display output and that the adapter is compatible.
- Check the TV manual for input-specific limitations and try the mini PC’s native HDMI output if an adapter is in the chain.
The picture disappears after changing a mode
Wait for Windows to revert if it offers that option, or return to the last known-working resolution and refresh rate. Reopen Advanced display and select a mode that Windows reports as supported by the connected TV. Do not continue forcing a mode that repeatedly produces a blank screen.

The picture works but there is no sound
- Select the TV as Windows’ audio output.
- Check the TV’s volume and mute controls.
- Disconnect competing audio devices temporarily to make the output choice clear.
- Confirm that the HDMI connection is still the active display path; changing to a different adapter can change the audio device Windows exposes.
The desired resolution or refresh rate is missing
Windows lists modes that the connected hardware reports as available. Check the mini PC specification, the TV manual, the cable or adapter, and the particular HDMI input. A different input or a direct HDMI connection may expose different modes. If you are duplicating two displays, try Second screen only to see whether the second display is limiting the common choices.
HDR cannot be enabled
Verify HDR capability on the mini PC and TV, confirm that the selected connection path supports it, and check that the TV is selected in Windows. The game also has to support HDR. If any component is incompatible, HDR will not be available as expected. If HDR produces washed-out colors or flicker, disable it and return to a supported standard-dynamic-range mode while checking each component.
Wireless display connects but gaming feels delayed
Wireless display behavior depends on the adapter, network environment, and software. The available Microsoft instructions explain connection, not gaming latency. Use a direct HDMI connection when responsiveness is the priority, or evaluate wireless play in the games you actually intend to use.
The controller is not usable in the game
Confirm that Windows recognizes the controller, then check the game’s controller support and input menu. Keep the keyboard and mouse connected so you can change settings or launch a title that does not accept controller input. The correct pairing and compatibility steps depend on the controller model and are not universal.
Bottom line
For most setups, connect the mini PC’s HDMI output directly to the TV, select the matching TV input, press Windows+P, and choose Second screen only. Then select a supported mode in Advanced display, route audio to the TV, and add a compatible controller. Treat USB-C and wireless display as conditional alternatives, and judge gaming performance from the exact mini PC and game rather than from the device’s size.
