To connect a MacBook Air or Surface Laptop to an external monitor, match the laptop’s video-capable port to the monitor’s input with a suitable cable or adapter, then choose how the screens should work in macOS or Windows. The right connection—and the number of displays and image modes available—depends on the exact laptop model and the whole cable, adapter, or dock path.
Before connecting: check your ports and display requirements
Identify three things before choosing a cable or adapter: your exact laptop model and generation, the monitor’s available video inputs, and the resolution, refresh rate, and number of screens you want to use. A USB-C connector describes its shape; it does not by itself guarantee that the port and cable carry video or support a particular display mode. Apple and Microsoft both note that the computer model and complete connection path affect compatibility (Apple’s Mac display guide; Microsoft’s Surface display guide).

- Power on the monitor and select the input you plan to use.
- When laptop and monitor have matching video-capable ports, connect them directly with a cable rated for your target resolution and refresh rate.
- If the ports differ, choose an adapter that supports the laptop’s video output, the monitor’s input, and the display mode you want.
- Connect the cable, then set the screen arrangement or projection mode in macOS or Windows.
Connect a MacBook Air
MacBook Air Thunderbolt ports support video output. Connect the monitor to power, then connect its video cable to a Thunderbolt/USB-C port on the Mac. Use a compatible adapter if the monitor has a different input. Once connected, macOS normally detects a properly powered display automatically (Apple Mac display guide).

If the monitor has HDMI or another connector
For an HDMI monitor, Apple lists a USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, which also provides a standard USB connection and USB-C charging connection. Apple also lists a USB-C-to-VGA multiport adapter and a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter (Apple adapter reference). These are examples of connection types, not a guarantee that every MacBook Air and monitor combination supports every resolution or refresh rate. Check the exact model and adapter specifications before buying.
Check external-display limits for your MacBook Air
MacBook Air models do not all support the same number of external displays. Apple says simultaneous-display support varies by Mac model and by the displays’ resolution and refresh rate; its MacBook Air guide gives model-specific configurations and directs owners of older models to information for their device (MacBook Air guide; Mac display guide). Match your exact model or chip generation to the intended display setup rather than assuming a limit from another MacBook Air.

Connect a Surface Laptop
Surface Laptop display support depends on the model and the cable or adapter. Connect the monitor to power, set its input to the connection you will use, then connect a video-capable Surface port directly or through an appropriate adapter. Microsoft recommends the same connection type at both ends when possible and recommends Surface USB-C display adapters or Designed for Surface accessories when an adapter is needed. Its guidance covers USB-C, DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, and VGA connection types; not every Surface Laptop generation has the same ports (Microsoft Surface display guide).
Choose mirror or extended desktop in Windows

- Select Duplicate to show the same image on both screens, Extend to use the external screen as additional desktop space, or Second screen only to turn off the laptop panel.
Microsoft also provides projection controls in Windows Quick Settings for people using the computer without a connected keyboard (Microsoft Surface display guide).

Surface Laptop display limits are model-specific
Microsoft’s support table lists the Surface Laptop (8th Edition) Snapdragon USB4 and Surface Laptop for Business (8th Edition) Intel USB4/Thunderbolt 4 configurations for up to one external display at 5120 × 2880 at 60 Hz or 3840 × 2160 at 120 Hz; up to two external displays at 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz; and up to three external displays at 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz. These are Microsoft’s specifications for the listed configurations, not independent test results. Other Surface Laptop editions have different limits, and the adapter, dock, or hub can constrain the achievable resolution or refresh rate. Check the table for your exact model and connection topology (Microsoft Surface Laptop specifications and features).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a cable, adapter, or dock
| Connection | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Direct USB-C cable | Both the laptop port and monitor input support video over USB-C. | Confirm the exact port and cable support the desired resolution and refresh rate; connector shape alone is not enough. |
| USB-C-to-HDMI adapter | The laptop has video output over USB-C or Thunderbolt and the monitor accepts HDMI. | Confirm the specific adapter supports the target display mode. Apple documents its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for MacBook Air to HDMI; Microsoft recommends Surface USB-C display adapters for compatible devices (Apple; Microsoft). |
| DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA adapter | A particular laptop and monitor combination uses one of these connections. | Match the adapter to the exact ports and signal. Older Surface Laptop generations differ, so do not assume every model has Mini DisplayPort or the same outputs. |
| Dock or hub | You want consolidated peripherals or a multi-display desk. | Check the laptop and dock model, supported screen count, port standards, and resolution/refresh-rate combination. A dock cannot override the computer’s native display limits. |
Microsoft recommends HDMI 2.0-rated or DisplayPort 1.2-rated cables for its documented connection guidance and recommends keeping the cable as short as practical, with six feet (1.8 m) as the upper recommendation for those examples. This is vendor guidance for those setups, not a universal cable-length limit; the cable must still support the intended display mode (Microsoft Surface display guide). Microsoft also recommends USB4/Thunderbolt 4 certified cables for optimal performance with Surface products.

Troubleshoot a blank, undetected, or low-quality display
- Check monitor power and input. Make sure the screen is on and set to the port connected to the laptop; reseat both ends of the cable.
- Test without accessories in the middle. Temporarily remove the dock, travel hub, extension, or adapter and connect directly if the ports allow it. The removed component may be limiting the signal.
- Verify cable and adapter capability. A cable or adapter that cannot handle the target resolution or refresh rate can leave the screen dark or force a lower mode. Apple says applicable USB-C/Thunderbolt adapters should comply with DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4 requirements (Apple display troubleshooting).
- Check the laptop’s display limits. Confirm the exact model supports the number of external screens and the requested mode. Resolution and refresh rate can affect what is possible across multiple displays.
- On Mac, check Displays settings. Open System Settings > Displays. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance says holding Option reveals Detect Displays. Reconnect the monitor, sleep and wake the Mac, or restart if needed (Apple display troubleshooting).
- On Surface, check projection mode and monitor input. Press Windows + P and confirm the monitor is set to the input receiving the laptop signal (Microsoft Surface display guide).
- Check monitor controls and software. Raise the monitor brightness and consult its controls if the picture is dim or blurry. Apple notes that third-party monitor controls and software can affect detection and available modes (Apple display troubleshooting).
