Connect the monitor to a rear HDMI or Thunderbolt/USB-C video port, attach a keyboard and mouse by cable or Bluetooth, then press the Mac mini’s power button on its bottom and follow Setup Assistant. Check your Mac mini model and the monitor’s inputs first: port layouts and display capabilities vary by generation.
Before you connect anything
Identify your Mac mini model and check which inputs your monitor and accessories use. Apple’s current Mac mini guide covers the M6 and M5 Pro, while older models have different display specifications. Don’t assume every generation has the same ports or display limits.

- Check the monitor’s available inputs and its documentation for compatible cables.
- Check the Mac mini’s rear ports. On the current models described in Apple’s guide, the rear video outputs are three Thunderbolt/USB-C ports and one HDMI port; the two front USB-C ports do not support video output. Apple’s display-connection guide is scoped to those current models.
- Gather the monitor’s matching cable, or an adapter or cable with ends that fit both the Mac mini and monitor. Connector shape alone does not guarantee a USB-C cable supports video.
- For a wired keyboard or mouse, check whether its cable fits an available USB-C/Thunderbolt port or whether you need an adapter.
Connect the monitor
- Place the Mac mini and monitor where you plan to use them. Connect the monitor to its own power source if required, then turn it on.
- Connect the display cable to a rear HDMI or Thunderbolt/USB-C video port on the Mac mini. Choose the port and cable based on the monitor’s input and the Mac mini model. If the connectors do not match, use a compatible video adapter or a cable with matching ends; consult the monitor’s documentation if you are unsure. Connect the keyboard and mouse
Use wired accessories
Plug each accessory into an available USB-C/Thunderbolt port using its cable. If the connector does not fit, use an appropriate adapter. Some wired accessories need a separate power source. Apple’s Mac mini accessory instructions describe these connection options.

Use Bluetooth accessories
Make the keyboard and mouse ready to pair and keep them near the Mac mini. Pair or reconnect them in System Settings > Bluetooth. Apple Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse can first be connected to the Mac mini by cable; after pairing, disconnect the cable to use them wirelessly. Turn on the Mac mini and finish setup
- Once the display and input devices are connected, press the power button on the bottom of the Mac mini.
- Follow the on-screen Setup Assistant prompts, including the initial Wi-Fi and user-account steps.
Apple’s setup guide gives the same core instruction: “Connect a display, keyboard, and mouse or trackpad, then press the power button on the bottom of your Mac mini.” Read Apple’s Mac mini setup guide.

If the monitor stays blank
- Confirm the monitor has power and is turned on.
- Use the monitor’s controls to select the input that matches the cable you connected.
- Check that the cable is connected to a rear video-capable port, not a front USB-C port on the current models covered by Apple’s guide.
- Verify that the cable or adapter supports the monitor connection you are using. If uncertain, check the monitor documentation or try a compatible cable or adapter.
- If you need to check display count, resolution, refresh rate, or supported port combinations, look up the technical specifications for your exact Mac mini model. Apple publishes separate specifications for the M6 and M5 Pro and 2024 Mac mini; do not assume those limits apply to other generations.
