Connect your monitor to a video-capable port on the back of your Mac mini or Mac Studio, using a cable that matches the monitor’s input. Then connect your keyboard, mouse, storage and other accessories to matching USB or Thunderbolt ports. Before planning multiple screens or a high refresh rate, check the exact Mac model and chip: display limits differ by generation.
1. Identify your Mac and your monitor’s ports
On the Mac, open Apple menu > About This Mac and note the model, year and chip. You can also check the device record or Apple’s specifications. This matters because display output and the number of supported screens vary between models.

Look at the monitor’s available inputs—often HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C or Mini DisplayPort—and check its manual for supported resolutions and refresh rates. A USB-C-shaped connector alone does not guarantee that a monitor accepts video through it.

Apple’s specifications for the 2024 Mac mini distinguish M4 and M4 Pro configurations. Its 2025 Mac Studio specifications distinguish M4 Max and M3 Ultra. For an older Mac, look up that exact model’s Apple Technical Specifications rather than relying on a family-wide display count.

2. Choose a cable or adapter for the monitor input
Whenever possible, use a direct cable between a video-capable Mac port and the monitor’s matching input. If the connectors differ, use an adapter designed for the monitor’s actual input. Apple’s Mac Studio connection guide describes these connection options.
| Monitor input | Connection | Check before connecting |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | HDMI cable from the Mac’s HDMI port | For the highest supported HDMI modes, Apple says to connect directly rather than through an adapter. The cable and monitor must also support the selected mode. See Apple’s HDMI guidance. |
| USB-C | Compatible USB-C cable | Confirm that the monitor’s USB-C port supports video. |
| Thunderbolt 3, Apple Studio Display or Pro Display XDR | Thunderbolt cable appropriate for the display | Follow the display’s guide for the supplied or supported Thunderbolt cable. |
| DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort | USB-C-to-DisplayPort or USB-C-to-Mini DisplayPort adapter, plus the monitor cable if needed | Match the adapter to the monitor’s exact connector and target display mode. |
| VGA | USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter and the monitor cable | Check that the adapter and monitor support the resolution you need. |
| DVI | USB-C-to-DVI adapter and the monitor cable | Match the DVI connector and confirm the supported display mode. |
| Thunderbolt 2 | Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and the display’s cable | Verify compatibility with the exact display before buying an adapter. |
3. Use a video-capable port on the Mac
On the 2024 Mac mini, Apple identifies HDMI and rear Thunderbolt/USB-C ports as video outputs. Its front USB-C ports are for USB 3 accessories, not displays. On the 2025 Mac Studio, the front ports differ by configuration: USB-C on M4 Max and Thunderbolt 5 on M3 Ultra. Unless the exact model’s guide confirms another supported route, use a rear HDMI or Thunderbolt port for the monitor. Apple’s guide to identifying Mac ports can help distinguish connector types.

- Connect the display cable to the matching input on the monitor and a video-capable HDMI or Thunderbolt/USB-C port on the Mac.
- Connect your keyboard, mouse, external storage and other accessories to matching USB-A, USB-C or Thunderbolt ports. Use an adapter or hub only when the accessory’s connector requires it.
4. Arrange the display in macOS
After connecting the monitor, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Select the display to adjust its resolution and refresh rate, and arrange the screens to match their physical positions. Choose mirroring if you want the same image on more than one screen; otherwise, use an extended desktop.
If you are connecting several screens, Apple advises connecting the highest-resolution display first. The monitor must support the resolution and refresh rate you select, and the Mac’s limit depends on its exact model and chip.

5. Check display limits for recent models
The figures below are model-specific examples from Apple’s specifications, not guarantees for every Mac mini or Mac Studio. A monitor’s capabilities, cable, adapter and chosen combination of displays also affect the available modes.
| Mac configuration | Apple’s listed external display support |
|---|---|
| Mac mini (2024), M4 | Up to three simultaneous displays in listed combinations, including two up to 6K at 60 Hz over Thunderbolt and a third at up to 5K at 60 Hz over Thunderbolt or 4K at 60 Hz over HDMI. Apple also lists alternate two-screen configurations with one display at up to 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 240 Hz. |
| Mac mini (2024), M4 Pro | Up to three simultaneous displays in listed configurations, including three up to 6K at 60 Hz, with alternate configurations that include one display at up to 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 240 Hz. |
| Mac Studio (2025), M4 Max | Up to five displays in Apple’s listed configuration: four up to 6K at 60 Hz over Thunderbolt and one at 4K at 144 Hz over HDMI. |
| Mac Studio (2025), M3 Ultra | Up to eight displays in listed configurations, including eight up to 6K at 60 Hz or 4K at 144 Hz, or four up to 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 240 Hz. |
Apple lists HDMI support up to 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 240 Hz for the cited recent models; the applicable model’s specification determines whether a particular configuration is supported. Apple says adapters are not supported for the cited highest HDMI resolutions and refresh rates, so use a direct HDMI connection for those modes. Check the Mac mini specifications or Mac Studio specifications, plus the monitor maker’s documentation, before relying on a particular resolution, refresh rate or display count.

6. Troubleshoot a blank or low-resolution display
- No picture: Confirm the monitor is powered on and set to the input connected to the Mac. Reseat both ends of the cable.
- Still no picture: Check that the Mac port supports video. On the 2024 Mac mini, do not use a front USB-C port for a display.
- Low resolution or refresh rate: Check the monitor manual, cable and any adapter against the mode you want. Try a direct connection if you are using an adapter, particularly for a high-bandwidth HDMI mode.
- Multiple screens not detected or not working as expected: Confirm the display count and combination against the specifications for your exact Mac model and chip. Older models may have different limits.
