How to Connect a Local Weather Station to Home Assistant Automations

You can connect a compatible Ecowitt station directly to Home Assistant using its built-in Local Push integration, then trigger automations from the sensor entities it creates. Home Assistant displays a callback address for the station to send readings to; once data arrives, use a measurement-specific threshold trigger when available, or a numeric-state trigger. Ambient Weather’s built-in integration follows a different route: it retrieves readings from Ambient Weather Cloud.

Choose a connection route

Route Data path What it needs Main trade-off
Ecowitt integration Local push from gateway to a Home Assistant callback Supported Ecowitt hardware, local network reachability, and HTTP access Direct local connection, but Ecowitt devices do not support TLS/SSL.
Ambient Weather Station integration Ambient Weather Cloud An Application Key and API Key from the Ambient Weather dashboard Built into Home Assistant, but cloud-dependent.
ecowitt2mqtt in Ambient Weather mode Station upload to an MQTT-based bridge Compatible hardware and MQTT setup Home Assistant documents it as a local option, but it requires an additional component.

For Ecowitt’s local route, see the Home Assistant Ecowitt integration documentation. For Ambient Weather, consult the Ambient Weather Station integration documentation, which also points to ecowitt2mqtt for a local alternative.

How do I connect my Ecowitt weather station to Home Assistant?

Ecowitt is a Local Push integration: the gateway sends readings to an endpoint on your Home Assistant instance. The gateway must be able to reach that instance on your network, and the endpoint must accept HTTP because Ecowitt devices do not support HTTPS.

  1. Check compatibility. Confirm that your exact gateway and sensors appear in the current Ecowitt compatibility list. Home Assistant lists the GW1200 Wi-Fi Gateway, GW2000 Ethernet/Wi-Fi Gateway, and GW3000 Ethernet/Wi-Fi Gateway with data storage among reported working gateways. Documented sensor examples include the WH51 soil moisture sensor, WH40 rain gauge, WH57 lightning detector, and WS90 7-in-1 sensor. The entities you get depend on the sensors you have connected.
  2. Put the station and Home Assistant on a reachable network. Set up the station and sensors, then connect the gateway to the same local network as Home Assistant, or otherwise ensure it can reach Home Assistant’s address and port.
  3. Add the integration. In Home Assistant, open Settings > Devices & services > Add integration and select Ecowitt. Home Assistant displays the callback server IP address or host name, path, and port.
  4. Configure the station’s custom server. In the Ecowitt app or gateway web interface, enter the address, path, and port shown by Home Assistant. Select the Ecowitt protocol, save the settings, and allow the gateway to send readings. The path must match exactly; if the mobile app prepends a slash, follow the path format shown in the current Home Assistant instructions.
  5. Confirm that entities appear. Once readings arrive, review the device and entities in Home Assistant. Depending on connected sensors, available values can include temperature, humidity, pressure, wind, rain, UV or solar, soil moisture, lightning, air quality, and battery status.

Handle the HTTP limitation carefully

Because the Ecowitt gateway does not support TLS/SSL for this connection, the Home Assistant callback needs to be reachable over HTTP from the gateway. If your setup accepts traffic only over HTTPS, the official instructions suggest configuring the network or reverse proxy to accept HTTP as well as HTTPS where needed. Keep this endpoint limited to the trusted local network; do not expose it to the public internet. The HTTP connection itself is not encrypted, so consider what devices can reach that network and avoid sending this traffic over an untrusted network.

Can I connect my Ambient Weather station locally?

Not through Home Assistant’s built-in Ambient Weather Station integration: it retrieves readings through Ambient Weather Cloud and requires an Application Key and API Key from the Ambient Weather dashboard. Home Assistant identifies ecowitt2mqtt in ambient_weather mode, with MQTT Discovery support, as a local option. That is a separate toolchain to configure, not a local mode of the built-in integration. Check its current instructions and verify that your station and MQTT setup are supported before choosing it.

Build an automation from a weather sensor

After station entities appear, create an automation that watches the entity you care about. In Home Assistant, open Settings > Automations & scenes, create or edit an automation, and add a trigger for the relevant sensor.

  1. Choose a measurement-specific trigger, such as Temperature crossed threshold, if Home Assistant offers one for that entity. These triggers handle compatible units automatically.
  2. If there is no suitable measurement-specific trigger, choose Numeric state crossed threshold and select the sensor entity.
  3. Set an above value, a below value, or both to define a range. Add an action, such as sending a notification or controlling a device, then save the automation.

The visual automation editor supports these triggers without YAML. The following is an illustrative pattern, not a tested configuration; replace the example entity and notification action with ones in your installation:

automation:
  - alias: "Notify when outdoor temperature drops below threshold"
    triggers:
      - trigger: numeric_state
        entity_id: sensor.outdoor_temperature
        below: 2
        for: "00:05:00"
    actions:
      - action: notify.notify
        data:
message: "Outdoor temperature has stayed below the threshold."

A numeric-state trigger fires when a numeric value crosses the configured threshold. It does not repeatedly fire merely because the reading stays above or below that value. It also does not immediately fire just because the entity is already beyond the threshold when Home Assistant starts or the automation is enabled: the value must cross back and then cross the threshold again. If you need a check at startup, add a Home Assistant start trigger and a numeric-state condition. If you use the optional for duration, Home Assistant resets that timer on restart or automation reload. See the numeric-state trigger documentation and the general automation trigger documentation.
