The Tool Desk

To use it locally, choose a host and server that support the same workflow, install the server and its prerequisites, grant it only the access it needs, then connect or restart the host and verify the tools are available. A local server is not risk-free: it can act with the operating-system permissions of the account running it.
How do I connect my local AI assistant to my apps with MCP?
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an interface between an AI application, called the host, and an MCP server that provides tools or data. The server is the part that connects to a particular app or resource; MCP does not make every app compatible with every assistant automatically. Check the documentation for both the host and the specific server before installing. Google Cloud’s overview names Claude, VS Code, Gemini CLI, and Cursor IDE as host examples, but that does not establish that every host supports every server or feature: Google Cloud’s MCP overview.

- Choose the host and server. Confirm that the host supports the connection type you intend to use and that the server is designed for the app or data source you want to connect.
- Check prerequisites and instructions. Runtimes, configuration fields, and package names vary. Follow the server’s current official installation guidance rather than copying an old command.
- Limit access before connecting. Configure only the directories, app permissions, scopes, or credentials needed for the task.
- Connect or restart the host. Local configurations may require a full application restart; remote connectors are generally managed through the host’s connector settings.
- Verify and test cautiously. Confirm that the server is connected and its tools appear. Start with a harmless read-only request, then review any approval request carefully before allowing a tool to change data.
Claude Desktop’s documented local filesystem server is a concrete example; the setup below follows that official route. Other host-server combinations can have different steps and platform support.
How do I set up an MCP server in Claude Desktop?
For the official filesystem-server walkthrough, Node.js is required. The server exposes file operations in the directories you configure, so choose those paths deliberately. Anthropic’s guide documents the manual configuration route and its operating-system-specific locations; check the live guide for the current path and syntax: Connect to local MCP servers.

- Install the prerequisite. Install Node.js if it is not already available, and follow the filesystem server’s current installation instructions.
- Open Claude Desktop’s developer settings. Use the app’s MCP configuration option to open or edit its JSON configuration file. Use the location and format shown in the current documentation for your operating system.
- Define the server and permitted directories. Add the server command using the documented configuration format, and specify only the directories Claude should be able to access. Do not grant a broad home-directory or drive path unless that is genuinely required.
- Save and fully restart Claude Desktop. Closing only a window may not be enough; quit the app and launch it again so it can load the updated configuration.
- Confirm the connection. Check Claude’s connector or tool list and MCP logs for a successful start. Try a read-only request against a file in an allowed directory before permitting actions that create, move, rename, or delete files.
The Model Context Protocol project’s guide puts the boundary plainly: “Only grant access to directories you’re comfortable with Claude reading and modifying.” The guide is versioned 2026-07-28.
A simpler option: Claude Desktop extensions
Claude Desktop also supports desktop extensions for installing and managing local servers. Its documentation covers directory installation and custom .mcpb packages, and describes support for Node.js, Python, and binary servers. The extension route may avoid some manual configuration, but check that your app version, extension, and required settings are compatible: Getting started with local MCP servers on Claude Desktop.

Do I need Node.js to use MCP?
No—not for MCP as a whole. Node.js is a prerequisite for the official Claude Desktop filesystem-server example, not a universal requirement of the protocol. The type of server determines what it needs: Claude Desktop extensions can also support Python and binary servers, according to Anthropic’s extension guidance. Check the server’s own instructions before installing a runtime or assuming one is required.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Yes. The main differences are where the server runs, how the host reaches it, and which permissions govern its access. Neither route is universally safer or simpler; the right choice depends on your network, data, and trust requirements.

| Consideration | Local server | Remote server or connector |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Typically on the same device as the host. | On a service or other remote infrastructure. |
| Connection method | Typically stdio between the host and local process. | An HTTP endpoint. In Claude’s remote connector flow, requests reach the server from Anthropic’s cloud infrastructure. |
| Network access | Local resources can be accessible without exposing a server endpoint publicly. | A server behind a VPN or firewall may need suitable public reachability or firewall configuration for Claude’s remote flow. |
| Permission boundary | The process can use permissions available to the local user account. | Access depends on the permissions and credentials granted to the connector, such as OAuth scopes or fixed credentials. |
| Setup route | Claude Desktop offers local configuration and installable desktop extensions. | Claude connectors are configured through connector settings. |
For the distinction between local stdio servers and remote HTTP servers, see Google Cloud’s MCP overview. For how requests and network access work in Claude’s remote connector flow, see Anthropic’s remote MCP server guide. Google Cloud’s page, last updated 2026-10-02, says its remote servers support MCP version 2026-07-28; that version statement applies to the servers covered there, not to all MCP hosts or servers.
What permissions does an MCP server get?
A local server runs as a process under your user account. A filesystem server can read, create, move, rename, and search files in its configured areas, subject to the permissions that account has. Restricting the configured paths limits the server’s intended working set, but it does not turn the process into a separate, automatically sandboxed user.

A remote connector instead uses the credentials or permissions you grant it. Review its requested OAuth scopes or other access settings and grant only what is needed. Anthropic warns that custom remote connectors can reach services it has not verified and that connected tools can read, create, modify, or delete data. Tool approval prompts are useful checkpoints, but they do not erase the underlying permissions of the server or connector.
- Connect only servers and extensions from publishers you trust.
- Review the requested permissions and the actions each tool can perform.
- Keep local filesystem paths and remote scopes as narrow as practical.
- Pay attention to approval requests, unexpected tool behavior, and prompt-injection attempts that could try to steer an assistant into misusing connected access.
- Revoke connector access or remove a local server when you no longer need it.
See Anthropic’s guidance on custom remote connectors for its warnings about connector trust, tool actions, and prompt injection.

What should I check if the MCP server will not connect?
- Check the host’s connection status. Look for the server in the host’s MCP or connector list and note any reported error.
- Inspect the logs. Use the host’s MCP logs to find whether the server started and, if not, what failed.
- Check the server independently. Follow its own documentation to confirm that the command or package starts correctly outside the host.
- Verify prerequisites and configuration. Check the runtime, command, file paths, JSON syntax, required environment settings, API keys, and app permissions.
- Restart and recheck. After correcting the issue, fully restart the host if the local configuration requires it, then confirm the server’s tools appear.
For Claude Desktop extensions, possible causes also include missing required configuration, organization policy, and app permissions; see Anthropic’s troubleshooting guidance. Host and server support changes over time, so verify current documentation for the exact versions and platforms you plan to use.
