How to Connect a Keyboard and Mouse to an Android Tablet for Work

Yes—you can use a physical keyboard and mouse with most Android tablets. Pair Bluetooth accessories in the tablet’s Bluetooth settings, or plug wired devices and wireless USB receivers into the tablet’s USB port. If the tablet has USB-C and the accessory has USB-A, you may need a compatible USB OTG adapter. Samsung DeX is optional: ordinary Android supports keyboard and mouse input without it.

Choose the connection that fits your tablet

Android supports three practical arrangements. The right one depends on the tablet’s ports, the accessories you already own, and whether you need a cable-free desk.

Connection What you need Advantages Limitations
Bluetooth keyboard and mouse Accessories with Bluetooth and charged batteries No cable or adapter; leaves the USB port free Requires pairing and periodic charging; nearby wireless interference can affect discovery
Wired USB USB keyboard or mouse plus a matching tablet port, dock, or hub Simple, low-latency connection without accessory batteries Cables occupy a port; USB-A accessories may need an OTG adapter on USB-C tablets
Wireless USB receiver Keyboard or mouse set with its receiver, plus a compatible USB port or OTG adapter One receiver can support a matched set and avoids Bluetooth pairing The small receiver must remain connected; compatibility varies by tablet, hub, and peripheral

Before buying anything, identify the tablet connector (usually USB-C or, on older devices, Micro-USB), the accessory connector, and whether the tablet can host USB peripherals. A USB-C port does not guarantee that every keyboard, mouse, hub, or receiver will work. An adapter changes the connector shape; it does not guarantee power delivery or peripheral compatibility.

Prepare the tablet and accessories

  • Charge the tablet, keyboard, and mouse. A device with a nearly empty battery may not enter pairing mode or may disconnect during setup.
  • Keep the keyboard or mouse within a short distance of the tablet while pairing.
  • Disconnect the accessory from another tablet, phone, or computer if it only supports one active Bluetooth connection.
  • Locate the accessory’s pairing button or key combination. The exact action is manufacturer-specific; consult the instructions that came with the device.
  • For USB equipment, check whether you need a USB-C-to-USB-A OTG adapter, a powered hub, or a dock. Do not force a plug into the port.

Menu names differ between Android versions and manufacturers. The Google path below is documented for Android, with some steps limited to Android 14 and later; a manufacturer may place the same controls under a different heading.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Pair a Bluetooth keyboard

  1. Enable pairing mode on the keyboard. Turn it on and press its Bluetooth or pairing control according to the keyboard’s instructions. A blinking indicator usually means it is discoverable.
  2. Open Bluetooth settings. On the tablet, go to Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device. On another Android version, use the Settings search field for “Bluetooth” or “pair new device.”
  3. Choose the keyboard. Under Available devices, tap the keyboard’s name. If Android displays a code, type that code on the physical keyboard and press Enter.
  4. Confirm the connection. The keyboard should move to the list of paired or connected devices. Open a text field and type a short test sentence.

If the keyboard appears under a previous name, select it and use the available connect option rather than creating multiple entries. A keyboard that is still connected to another device may not appear until that connection is released.

Pair a Bluetooth mouse

  1. Put the mouse in pairing mode. Switch it on, select its Bluetooth channel if it has one, and hold the pairing button as described by its manufacturer.
  2. Open the tablet’s Bluetooth controls. Use the general Android Bluetooth page, or on a Galaxy tablet use Settings > Connections > Bluetooth.
  3. Select the mouse. Tap its name in the available-device list and accept any pairing prompt.
  4. Test movement and clicks. A pointer should appear. Move it across the screen, click an app icon, and use the scroll wheel on a long page.

Android can keep a keyboard and mouse connected simultaneously. Pair each device separately; there is no requirement to pair them as a matched brand or set.

Connect a wired keyboard, mouse, or USB receiver

Direct USB connection

  1. Check the tablet’s port and the accessory plug. USB-C accessories can plug directly into a USB-C tablet when the tablet supports USB host operation.
  2. Insert the keyboard or mouse cable firmly. For a wireless set, insert its USB receiver rather than the keyboard or mouse’s charging cable.
  3. Wait a few seconds, then type or move the pointer. Android normally recognizes standard input devices without an extra driver.

Using USB-A equipment with a USB-C tablet

A USB-A keyboard, mouse, or receiver cannot plug directly into a USB-C receptacle. Use a USB-C OTG adapter with a USB-A socket, or a USB-C hub/dock that explicitly supports USB peripherals. Connect the adapter to the tablet first, then attach the accessory. If the tablet does not recognize it, the issue may be host-mode, power, hub, or peripheral compatibility rather than the connector itself.

Using a dock or hub

A hub can provide several USB ports, but every added component is another possible failure point. Test the accessory in the hub, then test it directly through an OTG adapter if possible. A bus-powered hub may not supply enough power for multiple devices; a powered dock can help, but its compatibility still depends on the tablet and hub.

Make typing and pointing comfortable

Physical keyboard settings

After Android detects a physical keyboard, open the keyboard settings from the tablet’s language or input controls. You can generally:

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  • Choose the physical keyboard layout and language.
  • Keep the on-screen keyboard visible while the physical keyboard is connected.
  • View available keyboard shortcuts.
  • Change the behavior of modifier keys such as Ctrl, Alt, or the Meta key.

Android uses the tablet’s on-screen keyboard language as the default physical layout. If the keys produce unexpected characters—for example, a different position for “@” or quotation marks—select the layout that matches the printed keyboard.

Touchpad and mouse controls

A connected touchpad has its own controls. Depending on Android version and device, you may be able to enable tap-to-click, reverse scrolling, bottom-right corner tapping for a secondary click, and cursor-speed adjustment. Change one setting at a time and test it in a document and a web page so you can tell whether the behavior is comfortable for your work.

Samsung DeX controls

On a compatible Samsung tablet running DeX, the physical-keyboard settings include a keyboard language option. DeX also exposes mouse controls such as pointer speed and the primary-button choice. Names and available options vary by model and software version.

Decide whether Samsung DeX is worth using

DeX creates a desktop-style interface on supported Samsung tablets. It can be useful when your work depends on resizable windows, a taskbar-like environment, and frequent keyboard and mouse use. Supported tablets can accept input from the touch screen, S Pen, USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or a compatible keyboard cover.

DeX is not required for ordinary keyboard or mouse pairing. Google documents connecting a Bluetooth keyboard directly through Android tablet settings, so a non-Samsung tablet—or a Samsung tablet used in its normal Android interface—can still provide physical input.

  • Secure Hold: Our PopSockets adhesive phone grip gives your cell phone a secure, comfortable hold in hand to help prevent drops while texting, taking photos, or scrolling on the go. Designed to stick firmly to most phone cases and devices.
  • Hands-Free Made Easy: Easily turn your PopSocket into a phone stand to prop up your phone anywhere, perfect for watching videos, video calls, or following recipes. A must-have phone holder that keeps your device secure and ready for anything.
  • Compatibility: Works with all phones, tablets, and Kindles. Sticks best to smooth, hard plastic cases and may not adhere to silicone or textured cases. Easily swap your PopTop to change up your style.
  • Black PopSockets: Simple, refined, and endlessly versatile. A timeless essential for any phone.
  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.

Compatibility is model- and software-dependent. Before planning a DeX workflow, check Samsung’s current support information for the exact tablet and the DeX mode you intend to use. A keyboard cover must also be made for that tablet’s physical dimensions and connector; a generic cover may not fit or communicate correctly.

Choose an arrangement for desk work

Separate Bluetooth keyboard and mouse

This is the most flexible cable-free setup. It keeps the tablet’s USB port available for charging and storage, and you can position the mouse independently of the keyboard. Choose it when the tablet will sit on a stand and both accessories can be charged regularly.

Keyboard-and-mouse combo

A matched combo can reduce the number of Bluetooth pairings or USB receivers. Confirm whether the set uses Bluetooth, a proprietary receiver, or both, and check its battery or charging method. If it uses a receiver, verify that your tablet or hub has a compatible USB path.

Keyboard with integrated touchpad

An integrated touchpad saves desk space and can be convenient when you do not need a separate mouse. It is a useful choice for travel, but a separate mouse may offer more precise control for spreadsheets, creative applications, or long sessions.

Model-specific keyboard cover

A compatible cover can protect the tablet and provide a fixed viewing angle, but fit and support are model-specific. Confirm the exact tablet model number and software support before purchasing; a cover designed for a similar-looking tablet may not connect.

Existing USB accessories

Reusing a wired keyboard or mouse is economical if you already own one. Budget for the correct OTG adapter when the tablet is USB-C and the accessory is USB-A, and recognize that not every tablet, adapter, or hub combination is guaranteed to work.

Troubleshoot connection problems

The Bluetooth keyboard or mouse does not appear

  • Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the tablet.
  • Turn the accessory off and on, then activate its actual pairing mode; simply powering it on is not always enough.
  • Charge or replace its batteries.
  • Move it close to the tablet and temporarily turn off Bluetooth on devices that may be claiming it.
  • Leave the pairing screen open for several seconds and refresh the available-device list if that control is shown.

A previously paired device appears but does not respond

  1. Open the tablet’s Bluetooth list and select the device.
  2. Choose Forget, Unpair, or the equivalent option.
  3. Restart the keyboard or mouse and put it back into pairing mode.
  4. Pair it again and test in a simple text field or on the home screen.
  5. If the problem returns, restart the tablet and check for available tablet and accessory software updates.

Unpairing and pairing again creates a fresh Bluetooth relationship; it does not erase documents or other tablet data.

The USB keyboard, mouse, or receiver is not detected

  • Remove and firmly reconnect the plug or receiver.
  • Try another USB port on the dock or hub, if one is available.
  • Test the accessory on another computer or tablet. If it fails there too, the accessory or receiver may be defective.
  • Try the accessory directly through a compatible OTG adapter instead of through a hub.
  • Check that the adapter is OTG-capable and that the tablet’s port supports USB peripherals; a charging-only connection will not be enough.
  • If several USB devices are attached, disconnect the others and test one input device at a time.

Typing produces the wrong characters

Open the physical-keyboard settings and select the correct language and layout. The selected layout must match the keyboard’s printed key arrangement, not merely the language you usually speak. Also check modifier-key behavior if shortcuts or symbols are unexpected.

The pointer feels slow or scrolling is backwards

Adjust cursor speed and scrolling options in the touchpad or mouse settings. If you are using DeX, check its pointer-speed and primary-button controls. Test the change in more than one app, because an app can implement scrolling or pointer behavior differently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The setup disconnects during work

Recharge Bluetooth accessories, reduce distance and obstructions, and check whether the accessory is switching between saved devices. For USB equipment, inspect the adapter and cable for looseness and avoid putting strain on the tablet’s port. A receiver that works on another device but not through a particular hub points to the hub or power path rather than the mouse or keyboard.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Security, reliability, and everyday maintenance

  • Pair accessories in a private location and remove old, unused pairings from the tablet’s Bluetooth list.
  • Keep the keyboard and mouse firmware current when the manufacturer provides a documented update method.
  • Charge rechargeable devices before a long work session and keep spare batteries for devices that use replaceable cells.
  • Use a stable stand so cable tension or mouse movement cannot pull the tablet from a desk.
  • When lending or selling the accessory, unpair it from the tablet so it cannot reconnect unexpectedly.

Quick checklist before you buy an adapter or accessory

  • What port does the tablet have: USB-C, Micro-USB, or another connector?
  • Does the keyboard or mouse use Bluetooth, USB-A, USB-C, or a dedicated receiver?
  • If it is Bluetooth, can it remember the number of devices you need to switch between?
  • If it uses USB, is the adapter explicitly OTG-capable and is the tablet’s port known to support peripherals?
  • Do the keyboard language and physical layout match the characters you need?
  • Would a separate mouse, integrated touchpad, combo set, or model-specific cover suit the way you work?
  • For a Samsung tablet, is the exact model supported by the DeX mode and keyboard cover you plan to use?
  • How will you charge the accessories while the tablet’s only port is occupied?

What to expect after a successful setup

A working keyboard should let you enter text in any app that accepts text, use Android’s available shortcuts, and choose a physical layout. A working mouse or touchpad should display a pointer for selecting controls, dragging items, and scrolling. Some apps are designed primarily for touch and may not expose every desktop-style shortcut or context menu; that is an app limitation rather than a failed pairing.

If your goal is a laptop-like workspace, start with the normal Android interface and add DeX only when your Samsung tablet and software support it. If your goal is simply faster typing or precise pointer control, Bluetooth pairing or a correctly connected USB accessory is sufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect a Bluetooth keyboard and Bluetooth mouse at the same time?

Yes. Pair the keyboard and mouse separately from the tablet’s Bluetooth settings. Android can maintain both connections concurrently, provided each accessory has power and supports the tablet’s Bluetooth implementation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Samsung DeX to use a keyboard and mouse?

No. DeX is an optional desktop-style environment for compatible Samsung tablets. Standard Android lets you pair Bluetooth input devices or connect USB devices without enabling DeX.

Will any USB-C-to-USB-A adapter work with my tablet?

Not necessarily. The adapter must support USB OTG, and the tablet, hub, and peripheral must support USB host operation and have sufficient power. Verify those requirements rather than assuming that a charging adapter will carry input data.

Why does my keyboard type the wrong symbols?

The physical keyboard layout is probably different from the layout selected in Android. Open physical-keyboard settings and choose the layout that matches the keyboard’s printed keys; review modifier-key settings if shortcuts remain incorrect.

What should I do if a USB receiver works on a computer but not on my tablet?

Reconnect it, try another port on the dock or hub, and test it directly through a compatible OTG adapter. If it still fails, check tablet USB-host support and the adapter’s OTG capability; the receiver may be incompatible with that connection path.
