How to Connect a JBL PartyBox to a TV, Phone, or Laptop

For a phone or laptop, Bluetooth is usually the simplest documented option: put the PartyBox in pairing mode, then select its model name in the device’s Bluetooth settings. For a wired connection, JBL documents AUX audio, and RCA inputs are available on certain models. A TV setup depends on the outputs on the television and the inputs on your exact PartyBox model.

Connect a phone or laptop with Bluetooth

  1. Turn on the PartyBox and select Bluetooth mode if your model requires you to choose an audio source.
  2. Press the speaker’s Bluetooth button to enter pairing mode.
  3. Open Bluetooth settings on your phone or laptop and select the PartyBox name shown there. For example, JBL’s instructions identify “JBL PARTYBOX 310” for the PartyBox 310 and “JBL PARTYBOX ON-THE-GO” for the On-The-Go model. Other models may show different names. JBL’s PartyBox 310 instructions and On-The-Go instructions provide model-specific steps.
  4. Start playback on the phone or laptop. If the speaker does not connect, confirm it is in pairing mode and select its entry manually. The PartyBox 310 manual says it attempts to reconnect to the last connected Bluetooth device when powered on; if it does not, select it again from the device’s Bluetooth settings.

Connect with a cable

AUX audio

Connect the source device’s audio output to the PartyBox AUX input with a compatible analog audio cable, then play audio from the source. JBL says the AUX cable is not included and documents this connection for the PartyBox 100, 200, 300, 310, 1000, and On-The-Go. Check the ports on both devices before buying a cable: the cited instructions do not establish a single connector type that fits every phone, laptop, or speaker. A phone without an analog audio output may require an adapter, but adapter compatibility depends on the device and is not established by JBL’s guidance. JBL’s connection overview lists the covered models and connection options.

RCA audio

JBL specifically documents RCA input and output connections on the PartyBox 200, 300, and 1000, including use with equipment such as a DVD or Blu-ray player or an AVR. Do not assume another PartyBox model has RCA ports; check that model’s specifications and the source device’s audio outputs before choosing a cable.

Connect a TV

There is no single documented TV procedure that applies to every television and PartyBox. First check the TV’s audio outputs and the input ports on your exact speaker. Bluetooth is an option only if both devices support a compatible Bluetooth audio connection. For a wired setup, the TV needs an audio output that can be connected to an input on the PartyBox with a compatible cable. JBL documents RCA connections only for the PartyBox 200, 300, and 1000 in the connection overview; check other models individually.

Bluetooth, AUX, or RCA: which should you use?

Connection Best fit What you need
Bluetooth Phones or laptops when both devices support compatible Bluetooth audio; no audio cable is needed. Pair the devices in Bluetooth settings. The speaker’s displayed name varies by model.
AUX A source with an analog audio output and a PartyBox with an AUX input. A compatible analog audio cable, which JBL says is not included.
RCA Compatible audio equipment connected to a PartyBox 200, 300, or 1000. A cable that matches the RCA connections and the source device’s output.

The cited JBL material does not provide controlled comparisons of sound quality or latency for these methods, so it does not establish that one will sound better or have less delay than another.

Fix common connection problems

  • The PartyBox does not appear in Bluetooth settings: Put the speaker in pairing mode using its Bluetooth control, then scan again and choose the entry matching its model.
  • The speaker reconnects to another device: Disconnect or disable Bluetooth on the previously paired device, then select the PartyBox from the phone or laptop you want to use. On the PartyBox 310, JBL says the speaker tries to reconnect to its last connected Bluetooth device at startup.
  • AUX audio does not play on a PartyBox 310: The 310 manual says only one source plays at a time and gives this priority order: USB, then Bluetooth, then AUX. Stop playback from a higher-priority source before trying AUX.
  • Bluetooth is unreliable: For the PartyBox 310, JBL notes that distance and the operating environment can affect Bluetooth performance. Its manual says it can memorize up to eight paired devices; pairing a ninth replaces the first. These details apply to the 310 and should not be assumed for every PartyBox.
  • A USB cable does not work as an audio connection: JBL’s documented USB audio use is playback from USB storage, not a general USB audio input for a connected phone, computer, or TV. Check for Bluetooth or a supported analog connection instead.
