How to Connect a GoPro to Your PC: Windows Transfer and Webcam Guide

For most current GoPro cameras, the most dependable way to connect to a Windows PC is to remove the camera’s microSD card, place it in a compatible card reader or adapter, connect that reader, and copy the files in File Explorer. Direct USB transfer still works on some generations, but its cable, USB mode, firmware, and software requirements vary. Webcam mode is a separate USB-C setup and is not the same as transferring recorded videos.

Which GoPro-to-PC connection should you use?

Your goal determines the best connection. Use a card reader when you want to copy photos or videos. Try a direct USB connection only when your camera model documents it or when removing the card is inconvenient. Use webcam mode when you need live video in a meeting or streaming application; it does not copy the recordings stored on the card.

How to connect a GoPro to your PC with a microSD card reader

This is the clearest general workflow for current cameras, including the sequence in GoPro’s HERO13 guidance. It avoids model-specific USB behavior and does not depend on installing Quik Desktop.

  1. Turn the GoPro off. Wait until the camera has shut down completely. Removing a card while the camera is writing can damage files or the card’s file system.
  2. Remove the microSD card. Open the camera’s card compartment, press the card as directed by the slot, and slide it out by its edges. Do not touch the gold contacts.
  3. Choose the matching reader or adapter. A USB-C microSD reader plugs directly into a USB-C port. A USB-A reader fits a traditional rectangular USB port. If the computer has a full-size SD slot, place the microSD card in a microSD-to-SD adapter and insert the adapter there. The reader’s connector must match the port you intend to use.
  4. Insert the card into the reader. Push it in until it is held securely. If the reader has an activity light, it may blink while the computer accesses the card.
  5. Connect the reader to the PC. Plug it into the computer’s USB port, or insert the SD adapter into the computer’s SD slot.
  6. Open the card in File Explorer. Press Windows key + E, then look under This PC for the removable drive. Windows may show the card by a drive letter rather than by the word GoPro.
  7. Copy the media to local storage. Open the card and copy the photo and video folders to a folder on the PC. Older GoPro manuals commonly refer to the camera’s DCIM folder; copy the relevant folders inside it rather than moving them if you want to keep the card as a backup.
  8. Wait for the transfer to finish. Keep the reader connected until the Windows copy dialog reaches 100 percent. Large video files can take time, and interrupting the process can leave an incomplete file.
  9. Eject the card before removing it. In File Explorer, right-click the removable drive and choose Eject, or use the Safely Remove Hardware control in the taskbar. Remove the reader only after Windows confirms that it is safe.
  10. Return the card to the camera. Insert it with the contacts facing the correct direction, press it until it locks, and close the compartment before powering on the GoPro.

Where your GoPro files are located

After opening the removable drive, look for the photo and video folders supplied by the camera. On generations whose manuals use the standard camera layout, these files are inside DCIM. Copy the entire relevant folder structure when possible; changing names or moving only individual clips can make later organization harder.

Why a reader is usually more reliable

The reader presents the storage card directly to Windows, so the camera’s USB mode, firmware behavior, and battery state are not involved in the transfer itself. It also gives you a clear test: if the card appears in File Explorer, you can copy files even when the camera’s USB connection is not recognized.

How to transfer GoPro files over USB

Direct camera-to-PC transfer is model dependent. Older and some model-specific manuals document connecting the camera with the included USB-C cable, powering it on, and following the computer application’s instructions. The HERO7 White manual, for example, tells users to install Quik, connect the camera with the included USB-C cable, power it on, and follow the app prompts.

  1. Use a data-capable USB cable. A charge-only cable can power the camera but cannot carry files. If the cable came with another device and its data capability is unknown, test with a known data cable.
  2. Connect the cable directly to the PC. Avoid beginning with an unpowered hub while troubleshooting. Try a different USB port if Windows does not react.
  3. Power on the GoPro after connecting it. Some generations expose the camera to Windows only after startup. Watch the camera screen for a USB, MTP, or connection prompt.
  4. Follow the instructions for your exact model. USB behavior and supported software vary by generation. A procedure that applies to a HERO7 White should not be treated as a universal instruction for HERO9, HERO10, HERO13, or another camera.
  5. Open the detected device in File Explorer if Windows presents it as storage. If the camera appears as a removable or portable device, browse to its media folders and copy the files to the PC.
  6. Switch to a card reader if detection remains unreliable. Turn the camera off, remove the microSD card, and use the reader workflow. GoPro’s current HERO13 guidance specifically documents that route for computer copying.

What to do when the USB cable only charges the camera

Replace the cable with one known to support data, then test another USB port. Reconnect with the camera powered off and turn it on only after the cable is seated. If Windows still shows no portable or removable device, do not repeatedly reconnect the same setup; use a card reader and check the camera model’s manual for its supported USB mode.

How to use a GoPro as a webcam on a PC

Webcam mode is a live-video connection, not a method for importing recordings. GoPro’s HERO9 instructions state that both the camera and computer must be set up for webcam mode before you go live. The HERO10 manual likewise describes a USB-C webcam setup and directs users to GoPro’s webcam instructions.

  1. Confirm support for your model and firmware. Webcam support depends on the GoPro generation, firmware, operating system, and GoPro Webcam software. Do not assume that a camera capable of recording to a card also supports webcam mode.
  2. Install or complete the official webcam setup. Follow the instructions at gopro.com/webcam for the camera and computer combination you are using.
  3. Connect the camera with a USB-C data cable. A charging-only cable cannot provide the webcam data stream.
  4. Select the webcam USB mode when required. On models that expose the setting manually, the documented path is Dashboard > Connections > USB Connection > GoPro Connect.
  5. Choose the GoPro in your meeting or streaming application. Open that application’s camera settings and select the GoPro webcam device if it is listed. The exact label depends on the operating system and application.
  6. Keep the camera connected during the session. Removing the cable or changing USB modes ends the live feed. To copy recorded clips afterward, leave webcam mode and use the card-reader workflow or a model-supported transfer method.

Webcam mode versus file transfer

A webcam feed sends live video to software; it does not make the existing recordings on the microSD card appear as ordinary files. If your objective is to edit yesterday’s footage, do not spend time changing webcam settings. Remove the card and copy the recordings instead.

What happened to Quik Desktop?

Older manuals mention Quik Desktop because it was available when those cameras shipped. GoPro announced on November 7, 2024 that it was discontinuing Quik Desktop: Quik Desktop for Mac was to be removed from the App Store on December 31, and a Windows version would not be released. That announcement means you should not assume that Quik Desktop can be newly installed on a Windows PC simply because an older manual recommends it.

Subscribers whose media is stored in GoPro’s cloud can use GoPro’s web Media Library, according to the same announcement. Premium+ or HyperSmooth Pro customers retain access to GoPro Player + HyperSmooth Pro. Those services are separate from the basic act of copying files from a microSD card, which can be done with File Explorer and a reader.

Why is my GoPro not showing up on Windows?

The camera is connected but Windows shows nothing

  • Disconnect the camera, replace the cable with a known data-capable USB-C cable, and try a different USB port.
  • Reconnect the cable, then power on the camera. Some models do not expose the connection until startup.
  • Check the camera’s USB or connection setting. The available choices differ by generation, so use the manual for the exact model.
  • Confirm that the battery has enough charge to remain powered while connected.
  • If Windows still does not detect it, power off the camera and use the microSD card in a reader. This bypasses the camera’s USB mode and is GoPro’s current documented computer path for HERO13.

The card reader is connected but no drive appears

  • Unplug the reader and reconnect it firmly with the card fully seated.
  • Try the reader in another USB port. If your PC has both USB-C and USB-A ports, use a reader that matches the port rather than relying on an uncertain adapter chain.
  • Test the card in another compatible reader or computer. This separates a reader or port problem from a card problem.
  • Open File Explorer and check This PC for a newly assigned removable drive. Windows may not label it with the camera name.
  • If the card is not recognized anywhere, stop repeated write attempts and consult the camera or card manufacturer’s recovery guidance before formatting it. Formatting would remove the recordings.

The drive opens but the videos seem missing

  • Open the camera’s photo and video folders, including the DCIM folder on models that use that layout.
  • Use File Explorer’s search within the card for a known file extension or sort by date and size.
  • Make sure you inserted the card from the camera that recorded the footage; a reader can expose any card connected to it, not necessarily the intended one.
  • Copy the folders to the PC before renaming or reorganizing files. Keeping the original folder structure makes it easier to identify a recording that was overlooked.

A transfer stops or produces an incomplete file

  • Reconnect the reader and copy the affected file again to a different destination folder.
  • Use a direct connection to the PC rather than an unstable hub or loose adapter.
  • Check that the card and reader remain firmly seated throughout the copy.
  • Do not remove the card until Windows has completed the copy and you have safely ejected the drive.

The webcam is not available in my app

  • Verify that the model, firmware, operating system, and GoPro Webcam software combination supports webcam mode.
  • Use a USB-C data cable and a different USB port.
  • On models with a manual setting, choose Dashboard > Connections > USB Connection > GoPro Connect.
  • Close other applications that may already be using the camera, then reopen the meeting or streaming application and check its camera list.
  • Follow the setup at gopro.com/webcam instead of treating webcam mode as a removable-drive connection.

Choosing a reader and cable for your PC

Match the reader to the computer’s port

Choose a USB-C microSD reader for a PC with an available USB-C port, or a USB-A reader for a traditional USB-A port. If the computer has a full-size SD slot, a microSD-to-SD adapter is sufficient. The practical requirement is a reader or adapter that physically matches the PC; the GoPro itself does not need to remain attached for card copying.

Keep a data cable for supported USB and webcam workflows

For direct transfer or webcam mode, use a USB-C cable that carries data. A cable that only charges can create the misleading impression that the camera or webcam feature is broken. Keep the camera powered on when the model’s instructions require it, and switch to a reader when the connection remains model-dependent or unreliable.

A dependable workflow for each common goal

Importing photos and videos after a trip

  1. Power off the GoPro and remove the microSD card.
  2. Insert it into a reader that matches the PC’s USB-C port, USB-A port, or SD slot.
  3. Copy the camera’s photo and video folders to a named folder on the PC.
  4. Open a few copied files to verify the transfer before deleting or reusing anything on the card.
  5. Safely eject the card and return it to the camera.

Trying to copy files without removing the card

  1. Use a known data-capable USB-C cable.
  2. Connect the camera directly to the PC and power it on.
  3. Follow the exact USB procedure for the GoPro model.
  4. If Windows does not expose the camera as storage, stop troubleshooting the same cable and use a reader.

Using the GoPro for a video call

  1. Confirm webcam support for the model, firmware, and operating system.
  2. Complete the GoPro webcam setup and connect with a USB-C data cable.
  3. Select GoPro Connect through Dashboard > Connections > USB Connection when that option is available.
  4. Select the GoPro webcam in the call or streaming application.

Optional driver check

If Windows still fails to recognize a supported GoPro, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional shortcut that scans more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, installs official drivers, shows current and recommended versions, and can back up and restore drivers or schedule scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a 2-day free trial requires no credit card before a subscription, and results vary by system.
