How to Connect a Gaming Phone to a TV or Monitor With a Controller

To play phone games on a TV or monitor with a gamepad, four parts must work together: the exact phone model must output video, the cable or adapter must carry that signal, the display must accept it, and the game must recognize controller input. A USB-C socket alone does not prove video output.

The most dependable method is a wired connection. Check your phone maker’s specifications first, then connect a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or video-capable USB-C cable, select the correct display input, pair a supported controller, and enable the game’s gamepad controls. Wireless casting may work on some phones and TVs, but device combinations and responsiveness vary, so do not assume it is suitable for fast games.

What you need before connecting anything

Identify the exact phone model and software version, not just the brand. Manufacturers enable external-display output on selected models, and support can differ between phones that use the same connector. Confirm these four points:

  • Phone video output: the phone must support wired external-display output through USB-C or another documented method.
  • Adapter or cable: the accessory must support the video protocol and resolution used by both devices.
  • Display input: the TV or monitor must have a compatible HDMI input or a USB-C video input.
  • Gamepad support: the operating system may pair a controller even when a particular game does not accept it.

Check the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model before buying an accessory. This prevents the common mistake of purchasing a generic USB-C-to-HDMI adapter for a phone whose USB-C port carries charging and data only.

Choose HDMI or a direct USB-C display connection

Connection What you connect Best use Important checks
USB-C to HDMI Phone, compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable, then HDMI cable or built-in HDMI plug to the TV/monitor Most TVs and monitors with HDMI inputs Phone must support video output; adapter must support the phone’s signal; select the correct HDMI input
USB-C video Phone directly to a monitor’s USB-C video input with a video-capable USB-C cable Monitors designed to accept DisplayPort over USB-C Both phone and monitor must support the required DisplayPort-over-USB-C mode; a charge-only cable will not work
USB-C hub or dock Phone to a compatible hub, then HDMI and optionally power or USB peripherals to the hub Setups that need charging or wired accessories while playing Power passthrough, video output and peripheral support must all be documented for the phone and hub

HDMI is usually the easier choice for a television because HDMI inputs are common. A direct USB-C monitor connection can reduce the number of components, but it requires a monitor and cable that support video, not merely USB charging.

Adapters, cables and power: what to buy

USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable

Use an accessory explicitly described as supporting video from your phone model or its USB-C display standard. For iPhones that support external displays, Apple documents USB-C-to-HDMI adapters or cables supporting HDMI 2.0, with output up to 4K at 60 Hz under the stated conditions. That specification does not make every USB-C iPhone compatible; the phone model still has to be on Apple’s supported list.

For a Galaxy phone, Samsung documents USB-C-to-HDMI connection and DeX cables for supported devices. Compatibility is device-dependent, so do not treat every Galaxy model as DeX-capable. A Pixel phone may mirror to a monitor or TV when the model supports wired projection and the connection meets Google’s DisplayPort or HDMI-to-USB-C requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Video-capable USB-C cable

For a USB-C monitor, use a cable that carries DisplayPort video. Many USB-C cables are intended only for charging or USB data. If the cable packaging does not state video support, it is not a safe choice for this setup.

When a hub helps

A hub is optional. It can be useful when the phone must charge during a long session or when you want wired USB peripherals, but neither feature is universal. Confirm that the hub supports video output, power passthrough and the required USB functions with your specific phone. A hub that works with a laptop may not provide video from a phone.

Safer shopping wording

Search for “USB-C to HDMI adapter for [exact phone model]” rather than assuming a generic adapter works with all USB-C phones. Treat compatibility statements as model-specific, and do not assume an untested third-party listing will work merely because it uses the right connector.

Step-by-step wired setup

  1. Find the exact model. Open the phone’s About section in Settings and record the model name and software version. Use that information on the manufacturer’s support site to verify wired external-display output.
  2. Inspect the display. Note whether the TV or monitor has HDMI, USB-C video, or both. If it has several HDMI sockets, record the socket number you will use.
  3. Select the connection. For HDMI, choose a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable. For a USB-C monitor, choose a video-capable USB-C cable and verify DisplayPort support on both ends.
  4. Connect the display side. Plug the HDMI cable into the adapter and the TV or monitor, or connect the USB-C cable to the monitor’s video-capable USB-C input. Make sure the plugs are fully seated.
  5. Connect the phone. Attach the adapter or cable to the phone’s USB-C port. If using a hub, connect its power input before starting a long session when the phone and hub documentation support charging passthrough.
  6. Select the input. Use the TV or monitor’s Input, Source or similar control and choose the exact HDMI port or USB-C source. The display may remain blank until the correct source is selected.
  7. Accept the phone prompt. Follow any on-screen request to mirror the screen or start a supported desktop-style display mode. Some phones begin mirroring automatically; others require a display or desktop-mode choice.
  8. Pair the controller. Pair it with the phone over Bluetooth or connect it with a supported USB cable. Pairing should be completed before opening the game so the game can detect the input device.
  9. Configure the game. Open the game’s controller or input settings, enable gamepad controls if offered, and test every button. A successful Bluetooth pairing does not prove that the game supports a controller.

Phone-specific connection notes

Samsung Galaxy

Samsung describes using an Xbox controller or another compatible Bluetooth controller with a Galaxy phone. For a larger screen, Samsung documents connecting supported Galaxy devices to an HDMI monitor or TV with a DeX cable and separately provides USB-C-to-HDMI adapter guidance.

Depending on the phone, the display may mirror the Galaxy screen or show Samsung DeX, a desktop-style interface. DeX and wired video output are not available on every Galaxy model. Confirm support for the exact model before buying a DeX cable or adapter.

  • CHECK YOUR DEVICE FIRST( USB-C MALE TO HDMI FEMALE): This adapter works with USB Type C ports that support DP Alt Mode. Want to be sure before you buy? Check your device specs - not every USB-C port sends video.
  • ONE-WAY VIDEO & AUDIO OUTPUT: This adapter sends video and audio from your USB-C device to an HDMI display. It does not support charging, and it is not designed for HDMI-to-USB-C direction.
  • 4K@60Hz USB-C TO HDMI ADAPTER CABLE: Get clear 4K picture at 60Hz from a compatible USB-C laptop or tablet. It also works with older HDMI 1.4, 1.3 and 1.2 screens.
  • PLUG AND PLAY, NO SETUP: Turn your USB-C port into an HDMI port with no drivers and no installation. What you see depends on your device and your screen.
  • EXTEND YOUR REACH: Going from USB-C male to HDMI female lets you keep using the HDMI cable you already have, and place your laptop or phone where you want it.

Google Pixel

Google’s Pixel guidance describes wired projection that mirrors a Pixel screen to an external monitor or TV. The documented connection requires the applicable Pixel support and a DisplayPort-capable connection or an HDMI-to-USB-C arrangement. Pixel model and software support can change, so verify the current instructions for your phone.

USB-C iPhone

Apple lists iPhone 15 models, iPhone 16 models except iPhone 16e, and iPhone 17 models except iPhone 17e for external displays through USB-C. Apple states that a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable supporting HDMI 2.0 can output up to 4K at 60 Hz under the specified conditions. USB-C monitors use a DisplayPort connection with the required cable support.

External-display support does not mean every iPhone game accepts a controller. Also note that Apple describes ordinary mirroring except when an app provides a second-screen experience; the behavior is controlled by the phone and app, not by the HDMI cable alone.

Motorola phones

Motorola’s Smart Connect documentation describes external-display connections on supported phones using a video-capable USB 3.1 USB-C cable or a USB-C-to-HDMI cable. Smart Connect is a feature for supported devices, not a guarantee for every Motorola phone. Check the model’s Smart Connect and external-display requirements first.

How to pair and use a controller

Bluetooth pairing

  1. Charge the controller and put it into its Bluetooth-pairing mode according to its instructions.
  2. On the phone, open Settings > Bluetooth (the wording can vary), turn Bluetooth on, and select the controller when it appears.
  3. Approve the pairing request and wait for the status to show Connected.
  4. Launch the game and look for a Controller, Gamepad or Input section. Some games switch automatically; others require selecting a controller layout.

Samsung specifically names Xbox and other compatible Bluetooth controllers for Galaxy phones. PlayStation states that DualSense Edge can connect to Android and iOS phones by Bluetooth or USB-C, while noting that feature availability depends on device and software support. These examples establish connection methods, not universal game compatibility. A game may ignore a paired controller, recognize only some buttons, or require a wired connection for a particular feature.

Wired controller connection

A USB-C controller can be connected directly when the phone and controller support that mode. If the controller uses another USB plug, an appropriate adapter or hub may be needed. Wired operation can consume the phone’s only port, which is why a power-passthrough hub may be useful; verify that the phone supports simultaneous video, USB input and charging before relying on it.

Check the game, not just the operating system

  • Test navigation in the game’s menus as well as movement during play.
  • Look for an in-game button-remapping or controller-layout screen.
  • Check whether the game switches back to touch controls after reconnecting the display.
  • Expect different behavior across games, even on the same phone and controller.

Mirroring versus a separate desktop-style display

Most wired phone-to-TV setups mirror the phone’s screen. The display shows the same game and menus that appear on the handset, so rotating the phone or opening another app can affect the TV image.

Some supported phones offer a separate interface. Samsung DeX can present its own desktop-style environment on a connected display, while the phone can remain available for other tasks. This mode depends on the device and software; it is not a property of HDMI itself.

Apple documents ordinary mirroring for external displays except where an app implements a second-screen experience. A game that supports a second screen may behave differently from one that simply mirrors the phone, so check the game’s own documentation when the layout is unexpected.

Why the display is blank or unstable

No picture at all

  • Recheck that the exact phone model supports wired video output. USB-C shape alone is insufficient.
  • Use the display’s input control to select the HDMI socket or USB-C source actually in use.
  • Confirm that the adapter or cable is rated for video and is fully inserted at both ends.
  • If using a hub, disconnect other accessories and test the phone with a direct, known-compatible connection.
  • Check whether the phone or adapter requires external power for the chosen mode.

Picture appears, then disappears

  • Reseat the cable and inspect for a loose connector.
  • Remove the hub or extra USB devices temporarily to isolate a power or compatibility problem.
  • Try another HDMI input on the display and select it explicitly.
  • Check the phone maker’s current support instructions for model-specific restrictions.

Video works but the controller does not

  • Confirm the controller is still connected in Bluetooth settings or is receiving power over USB.
  • Close and reopen the game after pairing.
  • Enable the game’s gamepad mode or choose its controller layout.
  • Test another game known to offer controller support to distinguish a game limitation from a phone connection problem.

The image is mirrored when you expected a desktop view

Mirroring is normal when the phone or app does not offer a separate display mode. Desktop-style interfaces such as DeX require a supported device and the appropriate software mode; an adapter cannot create that feature on an unsupported phone.

Wireless casting: when to consider it

Some phones and TVs support wireless display or casting. Availability depends on the phone, operating system, TV and network, and the cited device documentation does not establish one universal combination. Wireless links can also introduce behavior that is unsuitable for responsive games. Use the wired method when the phone supports it and consistent controller response matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical compatibility checklist

  • Exact phone model and software checked against the manufacturer’s external-display documentation.
  • Video-capable USB-C port or documented projection feature confirmed.
  • HDMI adapter/cable or USB-C video cable selected for that model and display type.
  • TV or monitor input type and source selection identified.
  • Charging and USB-peripheral needs evaluated before adding a hub.
  • Controller operating-system compatibility and Bluetooth or USB connection method confirmed.
  • Target game tested for actual gamepad input, not merely controller pairing.
  • Expected display behavior identified as mirroring, second-screen output or a supported desktop mode.

What this setup can and cannot guarantee

Official device instructions can establish that a supported phone can send video through a specified connection and that a controller can pair with a phone. They do not establish a universal phone-adapter-TV matrix, a list of every game that accepts gamepads, or performance figures for every third-party accessory. Verify each link in the chain for your model, display and game before purchase.
