Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To get 144 Hz, 165 Hz, 240 Hz or another advertised refresh rate, every part of the signal path must support the same resolution-and-refresh-rate mode: the monitor input, source output, cable, operating-system or console setting, and (for games) the game’s own performance mode. Plugging in a cable does not automatically select the monitor’s fastest mode.
Connect the source directly to the documented monitor input, select that input, then verify the received mode in Windows or the console’s video settings and, where available, the monitor’s information screen. The steps below cover PC and PlayStation 5 connections, explain why a display can remain at 60 Hz, and show how to isolate each limitation without buying unnecessary hardware.

What the refresh-rate number actually means
Refresh rate is the number of times a display updates the image each second. Microsoft defines it as “the number of times per second the image refreshes on the screen”; a 60 Hz display refreshes 60 times per second. A monitor marked 144 Hz is capable of accepting and displaying a signal at up to 144 updates per second under specified conditions. It is not a promise that every input, resolution, source or game will use 144 Hz.
Recommended Free Tools
Refresh rate and frame rate are different. The monitor’s selected mode describes how often it can refresh. Frame rate describes how many frames the PC or console actually renders. A game running at 80 frames per second cannot provide 144 unique frames per second, even when the monitor is set to 144 Hz. Conversely, a high-refresh mode can reduce waiting between frames when the source and game can produce them.

- Monitor capability: the maximum rate listed for a particular input and resolution.
- Output mode: the resolution and refresh rate the source is currently sending.
- Rendered frame rate: the number of frames the game produces, which varies by title, settings and hardware.
Use the exact model’s manual or timing table as the authority. Manufacturers can specify different limits for HDMI and DisplayPort, or for different resolutions. A 240 Hz headline may apply only to one port at a lower resolution, while another input may top out at 144 Hz.
Check compatibility before connecting anything
Identify the exact monitor model
Read the model number from the rear label, on-screen menu or original documentation. Search that model’s manual for an input-by-input table showing resolution, refresh rate, color mode and any required port or firmware setting. Do not infer capability from the monitor family name or from the largest number printed on the box.
Map the complete signal chain
Write down the intended mode, such as 2560×1440 at 165 Hz or 1920×1080 at 240 Hz, and check all links:

- The graphics-card output on a PC, or the console’s video output.
- The exact HDMI or DisplayPort input on the monitor.
- The cable specification and connectors at both ends.
- Any adapter, dock, switch, splitter or receiver in between.
- The operating-system or console setting and the game’s supported performance mode.
The weakest link determines the available choices. A high-bandwidth cable cannot make a monitor input or graphics output support a mode it was not designed to accept.
Confirm power and input selection
Connect the monitor’s power supply, turn it on and use the monitor’s on-screen menu to select the input carrying the source signal. Automatic input detection is not universal, and a monitor can show a picture from the wrong source at a fallback rate.
Connect a gaming monitor to a PC
1. Use the graphics card output
If the computer has a discrete graphics card, connect the monitor to that card’s HDMI or DisplayPort output, not an unrelated motherboard video port. A motherboard connector may be disabled, may use integrated graphics, or may expose different bandwidth and refresh-rate limits. With a laptop, use the port documented as connected to the discrete GPU when the manufacturer distinguishes between outputs.

2. Choose the documented monitor input
Insert the cable into the monitor input listed in its manual for the desired resolution-and-refresh-rate combination. Some displays require a specific HDMI socket, a DisplayPort input, or an input-version toggle in the monitor menu. Connect directly for the initial setup; leave docks, switches, splitters and adapters out of the chain.
3. Match the cable to both endpoints
The connector must fit both devices, but physical fit alone does not prove bandwidth. Sony’s gaming-monitor FAQ recommends DisplayPort for a PC and an HDMI 2.1-compatible cable when using an HDMI terminal; its INZONE M10S connection guidance names an HDMI 2.1- or DisplayPort 2.1-compatible cable for a computer. These are recommendations for the supported devices and modes, not a universal rule that every high-refresh monitor requires HDMI 2.1. A lower-bandwidth mode may work over another version if the monitor, source and resolution permit it.
Start with a cable already supplied with the monitor or computer when its specification matches the target mode. Replace it only after checking the manual and the complete signal path. A cable label by itself does not establish that every combination of resolution, refresh rate, color depth and compression will work.
4. Select the rate in Windows
Windows does not necessarily choose the monitor’s maximum rate automatically. Use this sequence:
- Open Settings.
- Choose System > Display.
- If more than one display is attached, click the gaming monitor in the display diagram or selection list.
- Open Advanced display.
- Check the listed current resolution and refresh rate.
- Open the refresh-rate menu and select the highest rate offered for the intended resolution.
- Accept the change and verify the result after the screen briefly goes blank.
Microsoft explains that the available rates depend on the connected display and hardware. Windows can show a star beside a rate that does not support the current resolution; selecting that option may change the resolution. If the target rate is absent, first select the monitor’s documented resolution, then reopen the rate list. See Microsoft’s current instructions at Change the refresh rate on your monitor in Windows.

5. Verify the received signal
Open the monitor’s information, signal or input-status page if the model provides one. Compare its reported resolution and refresh rate with Windows’ Advanced display panel. Menu names and reported fields differ by manufacturer, so do not assume one brand’s on-screen display behaves like another’s.

Connect a gaming monitor to a PlayStation 5
1. Use a supported HDMI input
PlayStation’s monitor setup example connects the PS5 HDMI output to either of the monitor’s supported HDMI inputs and recommends using the HDMI cable included with the console where appropriate. Follow the monitor manual if only one HDMI socket supports the desired resolution, refresh rate or variable-refresh-rate mode. The connection procedure is documented by PlayStation at How to connect a gaming monitor to PS5 consoles.
2. Review PS5 video output
On the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the resolution and related output options, then apply a mode that both the PS5 and monitor list as supported. PlayStation’s resolution guidance is available at How to change PS5 console resolution.
When the monitor provides an HDMI 2.1-capable port and the intended configuration requires that bandwidth, use that port and a compatible cable. Sony likewise recommends an HDMI 2.1-compatible cable for compatible consoles in its gaming-monitor guidance. HDMI 2.1 is not automatically required for every PS5-and-monitor combination; the required version depends on the exact resolution, refresh rate and features.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →3. Check the game’s performance mode
The PS5 and monitor can establish a high-refresh output while an individual game renders at a lower frame rate. Select the game’s documented high-frame-rate or performance option when one exists. Do not treat the monitor’s maximum Hz, the console’s output setting or the presence of VRR as proof that every game renders at that rate.
4. Confirm the mode on the monitor
Use the monitor’s signal-information page, if available, and the PS5 video-output screen to confirm what is being sent. If the console reports a supported mode but the monitor reports another, check the selected HDMI input and any monitor input-version setting.
What about other consoles?
Console menus and supported timings vary by model and software version. Open the console’s current video or display settings and compare its available resolutions, refresh rates and VRR options with the monitor’s manual. The exact Xbox menu sequence and a universal compatibility table are not established here, so use the console maker’s current support documentation rather than copying a PlayStation path. In every case, the console, monitor input, cable and game must support the same target mode.

Why a 144 Hz monitor is stuck at 60 Hz
Wrong source or monitor input
Confirm that the cable is connected to the discrete GPU output when applicable and to the monitor socket documented for the desired mode. A connection that produces a picture can still be on an input with a lower limit.
Windows is still set to 60 Hz
Re-select the gaming monitor under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and choose the supported higher rate. Windows may retain 60 Hz after a display change or driver update.
The current resolution limits the rate
Some displays support a high rate at 1080p but a lower rate at 4K, or 165 Hz at one resolution but 144 Hz at another. Select the resolution and timing listed in the monitor’s table, then check the Windows rate menu again. A starred Windows option can indicate that the rate is incompatible with the current resolution.
The cable or intermediate hardware is limiting the path
Bypass docks, adapters, splitters, switches and receivers. Test one direct cable from source to monitor, using the connector and specification required by the mode. For the INZONE M10S, Sony says to match DisplayPort version settings to the PC and cable; other models may expose different controls. Only apply model-specific fixes documented for your display.
A monitor input-version setting is disabled
Inspect the monitor’s input or signal-version menu for options such as an HDMI enhanced mode or a DisplayPort version. Enable only the setting supported by the connected source and cable. If the manual does not document such a setting, do not assume one exists.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDrivers or system software are outdated
Install the current graphics driver supplied for the GPU and apply appropriate monitor or console software updates. Reboot, reconnect directly and check the mode again. Updates can alter the list of available timings, but they cannot add a mode that the hardware does not support.

The console or game is not using the high-refresh mode
Review the console’s video-output settings and the game’s own performance options. A console may output a compatible signal while a game renders fewer frames. VRR can smooth changes in frame rate, but it does not force a game to render at the monitor’s maximum.
Multiple displays are changing the selection
Temporarily disconnect secondary displays and recheck the gaming monitor. This removes display-path and bandwidth variables. Reintroduce other displays only after the target mode works directly.
A reliable verification checklist
- Record the exact monitor model and target resolution-plus-refresh-rate mode.
- Read the model’s input timing table and identify the correct HDMI or DisplayPort socket.
- Connect the PC graphics output or console HDMI output directly to that socket.
- Connect monitor power and select the matching input.
- Use a cable whose specification is appropriate for both endpoints and the target mode.
- On Windows, select the monitor under Advanced display and choose the desired rate.
- On PS5, review Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and select a supported mode.
- Check the monitor’s signal-information page, if available.
- Launch a game with a documented high-refresh or performance mode; do not infer frame rate from the monitor setting alone.
- If the mode is missing, remove adapters and secondary displays, check resolution and input settings, update software, and test again.
How to compare two possible setups
When a monitor offers several connection choices, compare the complete mode rather than the largest Hz number. The following checklist keeps the comparison meaningful:
| Item to compare | Why it matters | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Monitor input | HDMI and DisplayPort sockets can have different limits. | Exact port and documented resolution/refresh-rate combination. |
| Maximum resolution at target rate | A headline rate may apply only at a lower resolution. | For example, 4K at 120 Hz versus 1440p at 165 Hz, only when the manual states those modes. |
| Cable | Bandwidth and connector compatibility affect available timings. | Type, version recommendation and whether a suitable cable is included. |
| Source output | The GPU or console may have a lower ceiling than the monitor. | Source model and its documented output modes. |
| Console timing support | PC-only modes are not automatically available on consoles. | Console compatibility information for the exact monitor. |
| VRR support and range | VRR can adapt refresh to changing frame rates but does not raise the game’s frame rate. | Whether both endpoints support VRR and the stated operating range. |
| Signal path | Docks, splitters and adapters can impose their own limits. | Every device between source and monitor, or a direct connection. |
A PC display may advertise rates above what a console can output. That is normal: the monitor’s capability and the console’s usable modes are separate questions. Check the exact console-and-monitor combination instead of comparing monitor labels alone.
When should you replace a cable?
Replace or buy a cable only after the manual identifies the required specification and a direct test shows that the current cable or path cannot provide the mode. First try the cable supplied with the console or monitor when appropriate, confirm both connectors, and remove adapters. If a new cable is necessary, choose one described by the monitor or source manufacturer for the target interface and bandwidth; no cable can guarantee a refresh rate when the monitor input, GPU, console or resolution is the actual limitation.
Key takeaways
- The advertised refresh rate is a model- and mode-specific capability, not an automatic setting.
- Use the monitor input documented for the target resolution and rate, and connect the PC to the graphics card output when one is installed.
- Set the mode explicitly in Windows or the console’s video settings.
- Verify the received signal on the monitor and distinguish display refresh from in-game frame rate.
- Troubleshoot the chain in order: display selection, resolution, input, direct cable, intermediate hardware, software and game mode.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 240 Hz monitor make every game run at 240 frames per second?
No. It can accept a 240 Hz display mode when the input, resolution and source support it, but each game’s rendered frame rate depends on the game, settings and hardware.
Is HDMI 2.1 always required for a high-refresh gaming monitor?
No. The required interface version depends on the exact monitor input, source, resolution, refresh rate and features. Use the model’s timing table and manufacturer cable guidance.
Why does Windows show a higher refresh rate with a different resolution?
The monitor may support that rate only at the alternate resolution. Windows can also mark a rate that is incompatible with the current resolution; select a documented resolution before choosing the rate.
