Connect the laptop’s HDMI or DisplayPort output to a matching monitor input with a suitable cable. USB-C can carry video only if the specific laptop port, cable or adapter, and monitor support a compatible video mode. Then set the display arrangement in Windows and check the external monitor’s available resolution and refresh rates.
Check the ports before choosing a cable
Look at the laptop’s side and rear panels and the monitor’s input panel. Common video connections include HDMI, DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, and video-capable USB-C. A USB-C connector’s shape alone does not indicate that it can output video: the laptop, display, and cable or adapter must support a compatible mode, such as DisplayPort Alternate Mode. - Check the laptop and monitor manuals or specifications for the exact ports and supported video capabilities.
- Prefer a direct HDMI-to-HDMI or DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort connection when both devices have matching ports.
- If you plan to use USB-C, verify video support for that exact laptop port and compatibility of the cable or adapter and monitor.
Choose a connection that supports your gaming display
The best connection is the one that works across the entire signal path: laptop output, cable or adapter, monitor input, selected resolution, and the GPU driving the output. A monitor’s advertised refresh rate does not guarantee the laptop can deliver that rate at every resolution. Laptop models may also route ports through different GPUs; consult the manufacturer’s documentation for your exact model. MSI publishes model-specific display-output information in its display-output FAQ.

Connect the monitor and arrange displays in Windows
- Turn on the monitor and connect the cable to the laptop’s video output and the monitor’s matching input. If using an adapter, connect it as specified by its manufacturer.
- Use the monitor’s input control to select the input you connected, if it does not switch automatically.
- In Windows, open Settings > System > Display. Select the external monitor if needed, then choose how the displays are arranged or used.
- Open Advanced display, select the external monitor, and inspect the available resolution and refresh-rate options.
Windows reports the refresh rates available for the selected display. Choose a rate supported by the monitor and the connected signal path; Microsoft notes that an asterisk can mark refresh rates that do not support the current resolution. Its refresh-rate instructions explain where to find and change this setting.

Check performance limits across the full signal path
For gaming, confirm both the resolution and refresh rate Windows makes available, rather than assuming the monitor’s headline specification will be reached automatically. The laptop port implementation, cable or adapter, monitor input, display settings, and GPU routing can all affect the result. NVIDIA recommends selecting the monitor’s maximum refresh rate in its GeForce NOW setup advice; that recommendation is for GeForce NOW and should not be treated as a universal rule for every game or laptop.
If Windows does not offer the mode you expect, check the specifications for the exact laptop model, monitor input, and cable or adapter. A different port on the laptop may have different capabilities or GPU routing, so confirm its documented behavior before switching connections.

Troubleshoot a blank or limited USB-C display
- Confirm that the particular USB-C port on the laptop supports video output. USB-C alone does not establish video support.
- Check that the laptop, cable or adapter, and monitor support the same video mode.
- If available, try another laptop port that is documented to support video, or try a compatible cable or adapter.
- Temporarily remove any hub or dock and connect the display or adapter directly to the laptop. Microsoft recommends a direct connection when diagnosing USB-C problems.
- After the display appears, return to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and check the available resolution and refresh rate.
Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance emphasizes that the computer, attached display, and cable or dongle all need compatible Alternate Mode support. If the display still does not work, check the laptop and monitor documentation for the exact ports and supported modes.
