First identify where your accessory sends audio: through the Game Boy, or from an output on the cartridge. Use headphones only with a documented headphone output; connect a documented line or audio output to a compatible powered speaker or mixer. A cartridge’s 3.5 mm jack is not automatically an audio output—it may serve another purpose.
Identify the audio path before plugging anything in
Check the accessory’s label and manual for the jack’s purpose and the supported console models. Cartridge accessories can send audio through the console’s cartridge connector, provide their own headphone output, or expose an output intended for external audio equipment. The connector’s size alone does not tell you which one it is.

- Console audio path: The cartridge sends sound into the Game Boy, and you listen through the console’s speaker or headphone connection, where supported.
- Cartridge headphone output: Plug headphones into the accessory’s documented headphone jack. Use its volume control if it has one.
- External equipment output: Connect the accessory’s documented audio output to a compatible mixer or powered speaker, matching the connectors at both ends.
- Non-audio jack: Do not connect it as an audio output. Some jacks have another function, such as an antenna connection.
Examples of cartridge audio connections
Orange FM: audio through the Game Boy or cartridge headphones
The Orange FM manual describes two listening paths. Its cartridge audio-input connection can send mono sound through the Game Boy cartridge header, allowing the console speaker to play it on supported models. The manual says this speaker path is not available on GBA models; Orange FM’s own headphone amplifier is an alternative. Its compatibility information names Game Boy Advance models except Micro, as well as the FunnyPlaying GBC and Analogue Pocket. Check the manual for the exact console and version.
The manual describes stereo headphone sound when signal strength is adequate. Orange FM’s FAQ also describes the 3.5 mm jack as an antenna/headphone jack and says an external antenna—including a 3.5 mm aux cord—can be connected there. That antenna function does not make the jack a general-purpose output for external speakers; follow the instructions for the particular use.

The maker’s FAQ says the cartridge audio input is present on Game Boy models through GBA, with input volume varying by model and Game Boy Color performing best. It also says, to the maker’s knowledge, Nintendo did not officially use this feature.
nanoloop mono: output for a mixer or active speaker
nanoloop mono documents a mini-jack output intended for external audio equipment. Its product documentation says: “The raw signal is rather strong and there is no volume control, it is hence best used as input for a mixer, active speaker etc.” Connect it to compatible powered equipment, rather than assuming the output is a headphone jack. This signal description applies to nanoloop mono, not to cartridge accessories generally.

Connection steps
- Read the accessory documentation. Confirm whether its jack is a headphone output, an output for external equipment, an antenna connection, or something else.
- Choose the matching audio path. For a documented headphone output, connect headphones there. For an external-equipment output, use a cable that matches the accessory and the powered speaker or mixer input. For audio routed through the console, use the console’s speaker or headphone connection where supported.
- Start at low volume. This is especially important with the GBA SP adapter; its manual explicitly recommends a low setting before insertion. Raise the volume gradually using the controls available for that path.
- Check compatibility if there is no sound. Verify the console model against the accessory’s compatibility information, confirm the jack’s function, and check volume and any accessory-specific mute or amplifier setting. Troubleshooting steps beyond these checks depend on the particular accessory.
