How to Connect a DVD Player to a TV With HDMI—and What to Do If It Won’t Work

To connect a DVD player with HDMI, plug a cable from the player’s HDMI OUT port into an HDMI IN port on the TV, turn on both devices, then select that HDMI input on the TV. HDMI carries digital audio and video over one cable on supported players. If either device lacks a matching port, the right alternative depends on the ports available on both devices.

How do I connect a DVD player to a TV with HDMI?

  1. Check the ports. Look on the back or side of each device for HDMI OUT on the DVD player and HDMI IN on the TV. Do not connect one output to another output.
  2. Connect the cable. Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the player’s HDMI OUT and the other into one of the TV’s HDMI IN ports. Cable inclusion varies by product, so check the player’s package contents; Sony’s TV connection guide says the cable described there is not supplied (Sony connection guide).
  3. Select the TV input. Turn on both devices. Use the TV remote’s input/source control to select the HDMI port number or name you used, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
  4. Start playback. Insert a playable disc and press Play. The picture and sound should come through the TV.

On the cited Sony player, HDMI carries both audio and video, so a separate audio cable is not needed for a direct player-to-TV connection (Sony DVP-SR510H manual). If you route the player through a receiver or sound system instead, the correct setup depends on those models’ ports and audio settings; consult their manuals.

What does HDMI do, and what does DVD upscaling mean?

HDMI is a digital connection that can carry picture and sound over a single cable. The connection itself does not make every DVD player upscale its output. Upscaling is a player feature that raises the output resolution of a standard-definition DVD signal. It does not convert the DVD into a native high-definition disc: Philips describes the source as SD video and the upscaled result as an HD signal (Philips explanation of upscaling).

Capabilities and settings are model-specific. For example, Sony lists its DVP-SR510H as able to upscale DVDs to 1080p (Sony DVP-SR510H specifications). Philips lists 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, and Auto as resolution options for the particular players covered by its support page—not for all DVD players (Philips resolution settings). A setting described as 1080p output is not a guarantee that the DVD will look like native HD; the source remains a DVD.

What if the DVD player has no HDMI output?

Match the outputs on the player to inputs the TV actually has, and check the TV manual for the exact model before buying an adapter. Analog inputs are not present on every newer television.

Connection option What to look for Audio and video notes
Component video Three video connectors, usually red, green, and blue Requires a separate red-and-white audio connection. Sony classifies this connection as standard-definition video in its comparison (Sony connection comparison).
Composite Yellow video connector plus red-and-white audio connectors Video and audio use separate plugs; Sony classifies composite as standard-definition video in its comparison (Sony connection comparison).
HDMI-to-DVI A TV with DVI, plus the appropriate HDMI/DVI connection DVI does not carry audio in Sony’s described setup; the TV needs a suitable audio input for the player’s separate audio connection. Compatibility depends on the TV’s ports (Sony connection comparison).
Composite-to-HDMI converter An analog-output player and an HDMI-only TV Compatibility and performance depend on the converter and devices. Do not assume a generic converter improves picture quality.

Panasonic’s connection guide illustrates both component video with separate audio and composite video/audio connections (Panasonic DVD connection guide). If neither player nor TV has a compatible port, a DVD player with HDMI output is another option; check the specific model’s specifications and regional availability before buying.

  1. Reseat the HDMI cable. Check that it is firmly connected at both ends, as Sony recommends in its troubleshooting guidance (Sony troubleshooting guidance).
  2. Confirm the TV input. Select the HDMI input that matches the physical port in use. If you are unsure, try the TV’s other HDMI inputs.
  3. Check playback. Make sure the player is on, the disc is seated properly, and playback has started. If the player reports a disc error or will not play the disc, follow its manual’s disc-specific troubleshooting.
  4. Check resolution settings. If the player’s video output resolution was changed, consult its manual for supported settings and a reset procedure. Philips documents a fallback to supported output for the specific models on its resolution page; that instruction is not universal (Philips resolution settings). Sony also documents a reset for applicable models in its player support materials (Sony player support).
  5. Isolate the connection. If available, try another HDMI input and cable. If the screen remains blank, check the support information for the exact TV and player models.
