A reliable drone connection is a chain: the aircraft must link to a compatible controller, the controller must connect to the correct flight app, and a phone or tablet must be attached when the controller has no built-in screen. Pairing the aircraft with the controller and connecting the phone to the controller are separate checkpoints, so one can work while the other fails. Use the model-specific app, a sound cable and port, current compatible firmware, and the manufacturer’s re-pair command before troubleshooting deeper.

Understand the four-part connection chain

“Connecting the drone” can describe several different links. Treating them separately makes a failure easier to locate.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Link What it does Typical failure message or symptom
Aircraft to controller Carries flight-control commands between the remote and the aircraft. The sticks do not control the aircraft, or the app reports that the aircraft is not connected to the remote controller.
Controller to phone or tablet Carries the live camera view, settings and telemetry to a mobile device when the controller depends on one. The controller can operate the aircraft, but the app says “RC not connected to mobile device.”
Phone or tablet to flight app Lets the app display the aircraft and expose pairing, firmware and account controls. The wrong app opens, the aircraft is not listed, or the app reports “Aircraft Disconnected.”
Location source for compliance Supplies location data for Remote ID on setups whose controller or goggles do not have integrated GNSS. A Remote ID error or missing location source appears even though the aircraft and controller are linked.

A controller with an integrated display removes the phone-to-controller link, but it does not remove the need for a compatible aircraft, correct firmware and the appropriate app or system. The DJI RC-N3, for example, is a mobile-device-dependent controller, so it needs a compatible phone or tablet.

Identify the exact aircraft, controller and app

Start with the model family rather than assuming that every drone uses the same application. Manufacturer support separates aircraft families that use DJI Fly from older families that use DJI GO 4. The aircraft, controller and app must be a supported combination; a cable cannot compensate for an incompatible pairing.

  • Uninterrupted Creation with Extended Battery Life - There are three sets available for you to choose from: 1-battery set (31-min), 2-battery set (62-min), or 3-battery set (93-min). [3] Say goodbye to battery anxiety and let nothing hold you back.

Find the model information

  • Read the aircraft name on its body, battery compartment or packaging.
  • Read the controller model from its label or startup screen.
  • Open the aircraft’s manual or the manufacturer’s support page and note the named flight app.
  • Check whether the controller has its own screen. If it does not, plan to use a compatible phone or tablet.

Keep the exact model names available while troubleshooting. “DJI controller” is not specific enough: the correct cable, app and linking path can vary by controller family.

Prepare the hardware before pairing

Many apparent software failures are poor physical connections or insufficient power. Prepare both ends before opening the app.

  1. Charge the aircraft battery and controller sufficiently for setup. A controller that powers off during linking cannot complete the process.
  2. Remove a phone case if it prevents the plug from entering the controller’s mobile-device port fully.
  3. Use the controller’s designated phone port, not a port intended for charging or another accessory.
  4. Inspect both plugs for a loose fit. If the app does not detect the phone, reconnect the cable and try a known-good replacement cable with the connector type required by the phone and controller.
  5. Keep the aircraft, controller and phone close enough for the initial link and leave unnecessary wireless accessories disconnected while testing.

DJI lists poor cable contact, an incorrect port and a controller that is not powered as common causes of a mobile-device connection failure. A case that holds the plug out by even a small amount can produce the same symptom as a bad app.

Connect a phone-dependent controller

Wired controller-to-phone setup

For a controller such as the RC-N3, the phone is part of the operating setup. The dependable sequence is:

  1. Turn on the controller and aircraft according to the aircraft manual.
  2. Connect the phone to the controller’s phone port with the supplied or compatible data cable. A charge-only cable may power the phone without carrying the app data connection.
  3. Unlock the phone and accept any USB prompt.
  4. Open the flight app specified for that aircraft family, such as DJI Fly when the manual calls for it.
  5. Wait for the app to load the aircraft and controller status before attempting to launch.

If the controller can move the aircraft but the app still says that the mobile device is not connected, the aircraft-to-controller link has succeeded and the phone link has not. Focus on the cable, port, phone case and USB settings rather than repeating aircraft pairing first.

  • Due to platform compatibility issue, the DJI Fly app has been removed from Google Play. To ensure a better product usage experience, please log in to the DJI official website to download the latest version of DJI Fly.

Android USB settings

Some Android devices expose a USB mode selector after connection. DJI’s troubleshooting guidance directs users to choose the mode appropriate to the device—“Charge only” or “Transfer files”—and to enable USB debugging when the phone offers no useful connection prompt. Menu names differ by Android manufacturer, so follow the device-specific instructions instead of selecting random developer options. Reconnect the cable after changing the setting and reopen the flight app.

Controllers with an integrated display

A built-in-screen controller does not need a separate phone-to-controller cable for normal app display. You still need the aircraft and controller to be a compatible pair and must use the controller’s supported software. If the display reports that the aircraft is disconnected, proceed to the aircraft-linking steps rather than trying to add a phone that the controller does not require.

Pair the aircraft and controller in DJI Fly

When the controller and aircraft are not linked, DJI’s documented re-pair path is in the app’s Camera View. The labels below are important because pairing and phone connection are different operations.

  1. Power on the aircraft and controller, then open DJI Fly with the phone attached if the controller requires one.
  2. Enter Camera View.
  3. Tap the … button in the top-right corner.
  4. Open Control.
  5. Tap Re-pair to Aircraft (Link).
  6. Within the linking period, press and hold the aircraft’s power button for more than four seconds.
  7. Watch and listen for confirmation: DJI says the aircraft beeps and its battery LEDs blink while the controller confirms that the link succeeded.

If the command is unavailable, return to model identification. The wrong app, an unsupported aircraft-controller combination or incompatible firmware can prevent the expected linking control from appearing.

Bind the aircraft to your account when prompted

Linking hardware and binding ownership are separate. If DJI Fly asks you to bind the aircraft, use this path:

Check firmware, compatibility and permissions

After the physical links are sound, check the software conditions that can block a connection:

  • Correct app: use the app named for the aircraft family. DJI Fly and DJI GO 4 are not interchangeable for every model.
  • Supported firmware: install updates offered for the exact aircraft and controller combination. A mismatch can leave the aircraft visible but unavailable to fly.
  • Device compatibility: verify that the phone or tablet is supported by the controller and app.
  • USB permissions: on Android, review the USB mode and debugging setting when the device does not establish a data connection.
  • Location permission: for Remote ID arrangements that use the phone as the location source, allow DJI Fly to access location.
  • Foreground operation: keep DJI Fly in the foreground when the compliance setup requires the app to provide location data.

Restart the controller and phone after changing a cable, USB mode or app permission. A clean restart forces the app to renegotiate the connection instead of preserving a failed session.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The controller cannot control the aircraft

  1. Confirm that both aircraft and controller are powered on and have enough charge to remain on.
  2. Verify that the aircraft-controller-app combination is supported.
  3. Run the manufacturer’s link or re-pair command in the correct app.
  4. Hold the aircraft power button for more than four seconds when DJI Fly instructs you to do so.
  5. Wait for the aircraft beep, blinking battery LEDs and controller confirmation.

If the sequence repeatedly fails, check firmware compatibility and use the aircraft’s model-specific manual. Do not diagnose a failed mobile cable as an aircraft radio-link failure.

The aircraft flies, but the app says “RC not connected to mobile device”

This message identifies the phone-to-controller checkpoint. Re-seat the cable, use the controller’s phone port, remove the phone case, restart the controller, and try another data-capable cable. If the phone is Android, select the appropriate USB mode and enable USB debugging when required by the device. The aircraft link does not need to be paired again unless the controller has also lost control of the aircraft.

The app reports “Aircraft Disconnected” or “Aircraft not connected to RC”

These messages point back to the aircraft-controller-app chain. Confirm the app named for the model, check supported firmware, verify controller and aircraft compatibility, and repeat the linking flow. DJI also lists mobile-device faults as a possible cause, so test the phone and cable separately when the app cannot maintain its session.

Android never establishes a data connection

  • Unlock the phone before connecting it.
  • Use the controller’s designated data port.
  • Choose “Charge only” or “Transfer files” as appropriate for that Android device.
  • Enable USB debugging if the device provides no usable prompt and DJI’s device-specific instructions call for it.
  • Reconnect after every setting change and reopen the app.

A legacy Wi-Fi connection keeps dropping

Some older models connect the phone by a model-specific direct Wi-Fi network rather than a controller cable. Disconnect the phone from other Wi-Fi networks, verify the controller’s SSID and password, and disable any phone Wi-Fi-assistant feature that abandons networks without internet access. A direct drone network can be valid even when the phone labels it as having no internet.

Remote ID reports an error or has no location source

First determine whether the controller or goggles include integrated GNSS. If they do not, use a GNSS-capable phone or tablet, grant DJI Fly location permission, keep DJI Fly in the foreground and use compliant firmware. This is a separate compliance data path; a successful aircraft link does not by itself prove that the location source is ready.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Can you fly without Wi-Fi?

It depends on the connection architecture. A controller with a built-in display, or a phone-dependent controller using a wired controller-to-phone cable, does not require the phone to join a separate Wi-Fi network for that link. Legacy models designed around direct Wi-Fi do require the phone to join the aircraft or controller’s local wireless network. In either case, the aircraft still needs a valid controller link, the correct app when one is required, and any applicable firmware, account and regulatory checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse Wi-Fi with internet access. A phone may be connected to a local drone network that has no internet route; Wi-Fi-assistant behavior can mistakenly disconnect it. Internet access may still be needed for account sign-in or software updates, but the local control architecture is determined by the model.

Remote ID, registration and location requirements in the United States

Connection readiness is not the same as legal readiness. For covered drones in the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration defines Remote ID as “the ability of a drone in flight to provide identification and location information that can be received by other parties through a broadcast signal.”

Registered drones must carry the registration number. Check the FAA’s current registration and Remote ID requirements for the aircraft and operation before flight. The cited requirements are U.S.-specific; pilots elsewhere must consult their own national aviation authority because the responsible regulator, equipment rules and registration process can differ.

When the controller lacks integrated GNSS, the phone or tablet may be the location source. That arrangement requires a GNSS-capable mobile device, location permission for DJI Fly, foreground operation of DJI Fly and firmware that supports the setup. A controller that controls the aircraft successfully can still fail this compliance check.

Choose the connection architecture that fits your workflow

Setup Advantages Trade-offs and checks
Built-in-screen controller Fewer external connection points; no phone-to-controller cable for the flight display. Still requires a compatible aircraft, supported software and a working aircraft-controller link. Confirm whether the controller supplies GNSS for your Remote ID setup.
Phone-dependent controller such as RC-N3 Uses a familiar phone or tablet for the app display and settings. Requires a compatible mobile device, a secure data cable, the correct port, USB permissions and a charged phone. Verify aircraft compatibility before purchase or use.
Wired controller-to-phone connection Uses the controller’s cable connection and avoids dependence on a separate Wi-Fi network. Failure points include the cable, connector, case obstruction, USB mode and phone compatibility.
Model-specific direct Wi-Fi Can connect a phone locally without a controller-to-phone cable on supported legacy models. Requires the correct SSID and password and may be disrupted by Wi-Fi-assistant features or other remembered networks.
Controller or goggles with GNSS Can provide the location source without relying on a phone’s GNSS. Confirm the exact hardware capability and firmware; not every controller or goggles unit includes GNSS.
Phone-supplied GNSS Provides location data when the controller lacks integrated GNSS. Requires a GNSS-capable phone or tablet, location permission and DJI Fly in the foreground.

A field checklist for every connection attempt

  • Aircraft model, controller model and required app identified.
  • Aircraft and controller powered and charged.
  • Phone case removed if it blocks full connector insertion.
  • Correct controller port selected.
  • Known-good data cable fitted for phone-dependent controllers.
  • Phone unlocked, compatible and allowed to use the required USB mode.
  • DJI Fly or the specified app open and showing the expected aircraft.
  • Aircraft-controller link confirmed through the re-pair flow when needed.
  • Account binding completed only after checking the serial number.
  • Firmware and compatibility checked after any aircraft or controller change.
  • Remote ID location source confirmed, including permissions and foreground operation where required.
  • Registration number and applicable aviation requirements checked for the flight’s country.

When replacement or support is the sensible next step

Replace the controller-to-phone cable when reconnecting it, changing ports and removing the case do not restore the mobile-device link. Use a cable whose connector and data capability match both devices. If a known-good cable and compatible phone still fail, the phone port, controller or mobile device may need service.

Escalate to manufacturer support with the exact aircraft and controller models, app name, firmware versions, the message shown, and the steps that reproduced it. This information separates an aircraft-link problem from a mobile USB, compatibility, account-binding or Remote ID-location problem and avoids repeating unrelated resets.

Bottom line

Build the connection in order: identify the supported aircraft-controller-app family, prepare power and ports, attach the phone when required, link the aircraft and controller through the app’s re-pair command, then verify firmware, account, permissions and Remote ID readiness. When a failure appears, follow the message to the correct checkpoint instead of repairing every link at once.
