Connect a video-capable USB-C or Thunderbolt port on the Dell XPS 13 directly to a monitor that accepts USB-C or Thunderbolt. For an HDMI or DisplayPort monitor, use a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI or USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter. A USB-C or Thunderbolt dock is the better choice when you need two or more displays, several peripherals, or one desk cable that may also charge the laptop.

The exact steps and display limits depend on your XPS 13 generation. Identify the model first, then match the laptop port, adapter or dock, cable, monitor input, resolution and refresh rate.

Identify your exact XPS 13 before choosing a cable

XPS 13 is a product family, not a single port specification. Different generations use different USB-C and Thunderbolt implementations, and their external-display limits are not interchangeable. Find the full model number in Windows System Information, Dell SupportAssist, the Dell Support service-tag page, or the label on the underside of the laptop. Use that model number when reading the setup or external-display guide.

Examples of differences between generations

XPS 13 example Port information documented by Dell What it means for monitor setup
9350 Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports Can use compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt display connections; the guide lists several model-specific external-display configurations.
9345 USB-C ports Display combinations and accessory compatibility must be checked against the 9345 guide rather than assumed from another XPS generation.
9315 Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports Use the 9315 external-display documentation for its exact port and display limits.
9360 Thunderbolt 3 port supporting DisplayPort 1.2 DisplayPort capability is documented for that port, but the cable, adapter and monitor still need to support the desired mode.

USB-C describes the connector shape, not automatically the video capability. A USB-C port used only for data or charging may not output a display signal. Confirm video support for the exact XPS model and use a cable rated for the resolution and refresh rate you want.

Choose the connection that matches your monitor

Direct USB-C or Thunderbolt connection

Use this path when the monitor has a USB-C video input or a Thunderbolt input and the selected XPS port supports video. A single suitable cable carries the display signal, and some USB-C monitors can also provide power to the laptop. Do not assume that every USB-C monitor supplies enough power or that every USB-C cable supports the same display mode.

  1. Confirm that the XPS port is video-capable and that the monitor input is intended for USB-C or Thunderbolt video.
  2. Connect the cable to the monitor first, then to the XPS 13.
  3. Select USB-C or Thunderbolt as the monitor’s input if it does not switch automatically.
  4. Open Windows display settings and choose whether to duplicate, extend or show the desktop on only one screen.

USB-C-to-HDMI adapter

For a monitor with HDMI input, connect a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter to the XPS 13 and an HDMI cable from the adapter to the monitor. The adapter must support video from the particular XPS model and the HDMI resolution and refresh rate you intend to use. An adapter that works for basic 1080p output may not provide 4K at 60 Hz.

  1. Insert the adapter into a video-capable USB-C or Thunderbolt port.
  2. Connect the HDMI cable between the adapter and the monitor.
  3. Set the monitor to the HDMI input used by the cable.
  4. Configure the screen in Windows under Settings > System > Display.

Power pass-through is a separate feature. Some USB-C display adapters include a USB-C power input, while others carry video only. If you want to charge the XPS through the adapter, the product must explicitly list power pass-through and a suitable wattage. Dell notes that USB-C and Thunderbolt adapters may not allow simultaneous charging, so a display connection alone is not proof that the laptop will charge.

USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter

For a DisplayPort monitor, use a compatible USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter or a dock with a DisplayPort output. Follow the same signal path: XPS USB-C or Thunderbolt port, adapter or dock, DisplayPort cable, then the monitor’s DisplayPort input. Check whether the adapter supports the monitor’s target resolution and refresh rate; DisplayPort connector compatibility by itself does not establish a maximum mode.

USB-C or Thunderbolt dock

A dock is useful when the desk has multiple monitors, Ethernet, USB accessories, audio equipment or other connections. One host cable runs from the dock to the XPS 13, while the displays and peripherals stay connected to the dock. A compatible dock may also charge the laptop, but charging power and display capabilities vary by dock and XPS generation.

Dell’s model-contextual accessory listings include the Thunderbolt Dock WD22TB4 for the XPS 13 9350 and USB-C accessories such as DA305, DA310 and UD22 for the XPS 13 9345. Those listings do not establish that every accessory is optimal for every XPS 13 or every monitor. Verify the exact host compatibility, display count, resolution, refresh rate and power specifications before purchasing.

Connect one monitor step by step

Option 1: USB-C or Thunderbolt monitor

  1. Identify a USB-C or Thunderbolt port on the XPS 13 that supports display output.
  2. Check that the monitor’s USB-C or Thunderbolt input accepts video, not just USB data.
  3. Use a cable rated for the required display mode. For high-resolution or high-refresh operation, the cable is part of the performance limit.
  4. Connect the cable to the monitor and laptop.
  5. Choose the correct monitor input, then press Windows key + P and select Extend, Duplicate, PC screen only or Second screen only. You can also use Settings > System > Display for arrangement and resolution controls.

Option 2: HDMI monitor through an adapter

  1. Plug a video-capable USB-C-to-HDMI adapter into the XPS 13.
  2. Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to the monitor.
  3. Select the matching HDMI input on the monitor.
  4. In Windows display settings, select Detect if the screen is not listed, then choose Extend these displays or another arrangement.
  5. Set the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate to a combination supported by the XPS port, adapter and HDMI cable.

Option 3: DisplayPort monitor through an adapter

  1. Attach a compatible USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter to the XPS 13.
  2. Connect the DisplayPort cable from the adapter to the monitor.
  3. Set the monitor input to DisplayPort.
  4. Configure display mode, resolution, orientation and refresh rate in Settings > System > Display.

If the XPS model guide identifies a preferred port for display connections, try that port first. Dell identifies the left-side USB-C or Thunderbolt port as the preferred display connection on some models; the exact recommendation varies by generation.

Set up a dock and two or more monitors

A dock does not remove the need to check display limits. Its outputs, the XPS graphics hardware, the dock connection and the monitor cables all contribute to the maximum number of screens and the available modes.

  1. Connect each monitor to the dock using the dock’s supported HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C or Thunderbolt outputs.
  2. Turn on the monitors and select their correct inputs.
  3. Connect the dock’s host cable to the video-capable USB-C or Thunderbolt port on the XPS 13. Dell’s instructions recommend attaching the display to the dock first and then connecting the dock to the computer.
  4. Connect peripherals and the dock’s power supply after the display connections are established.
  5. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display, select Identify to label the screens, and drag the display rectangles to match their physical positions.
  6. Choose Extend these displays if you want separate work areas. Use Duplicate only when both screens should show the same image.

For two monitors, compare the dock’s supported two-display combinations with the XPS model guide. A dock may expose two video connectors but still limit the pair to a lower resolution or refresh rate, or require a particular combination of outputs. If the laptop does not detect a screen, connect one monitor directly to the XPS to determine whether the limitation is in the dock path.

Resolution, refresh rate and display-count limits

There is no single maximum display specification for every Dell XPS 13. The applicable limit depends on the generation, graphics configuration, internal-screen state where applicable, port, cable, adapter or dock and monitor.

Model and documentation context External-display information reported by Dell How to interpret it
XPS 13 9350 The guide separates supported external-display configurations up to 4K at 60 Hz from configurations up to 8K at 60 Hz. These are named configurations in the 9350 guide, not a universal promise for all XPS 13 systems or every combination of monitors.
XPS 13 9345 The guide includes combinations such as three 4K displays at 60 Hz, or one 4K display at 60 Hz together with one 5K display at 60 Hz or one 4K display at 120 Hz. Use the exact 9345 configuration table, including the number of displays and connection method, before planning a desk setup.
Other XPS 13 generations Not stated as a single family-wide value. Consult the guide for the exact model; do not transfer the 9345 or 9350 figures to another generation.

Dell recommends appropriate cables for full supported resolution and gives DisplayPort or HDMI cables as examples for 4K and above. Think of the setup as a chain: the laptop output, adapter or dock, cable and monitor input must all support the requested mode. If one link supports only a lower resolution or refresh rate, Windows may offer only that lower mode.

When a high-refresh monitor runs at a lower rate

  • Check the monitor’s selected input and its on-screen information panel.
  • Verify that the adapter or dock explicitly supports the desired refresh rate at the selected resolution.
  • Replace an unverified cable with one rated for the required mode.
  • In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and inspect the refresh-rate choices available for the selected monitor.
  • If the high-refresh mode is available only when another monitor is disconnected, the dock or XPS configuration may be enforcing a multi-display limit.

Specification to check Why it matters
Monitor connector Confirm whether the display uses HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C or Thunderbolt, and select an adapter or dock with that output.
Resolution and refresh rate at your display count A device may support a mode for one monitor but a lower mode when two or more monitors are connected.
Power delivery or pass-through Display output does not guarantee charging. Look for explicit power-pass-through support and a wattage suitable for the XPS model.
Number and type of extra ports Count the USB, audio, network and card-reader connections you will actually use, not just the video outputs.
Exact XPS compatibility Check the accessory documentation against the full model number, especially when comparing USB-C and Thunderbolt systems.
Software or driver requirement Some display solutions depend on software or drivers. Confirm requirements before relying on the dock for a work computer.

For a single HDMI monitor, a straightforward USB-C-to-HDMI adapter usually adds less complexity than a dock. For a multi-monitor workstation or a desk where one cable should connect displays and peripherals, a compatible dock is more practical. In either case, treat the stated display mode and charging specifications as requirements to verify, not assumptions based on the accessory’s name.

Troubleshoot a blank or unreliable display

The monitor says No signal

  1. Use the monitor’s input control to select the actual HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C or Thunderbolt input in use.
  2. Disconnect and reconnect both ends of the display cable.
  3. Confirm that the adapter or dock is plugged into a video-capable XPS port for your exact generation.
  4. If a dock is involved, connect the monitor to the dock first and then reconnect the dock’s host cable to the laptop.
  5. Try the XPS port identified as preferred in the model’s guide; on some models this is the left-side USB-C or Thunderbolt port.
  6. Press Windows key + P and select Extend or Duplicate. Then open Settings > System > Display and select Detect.

The display works but resolution or refresh rate is too low

  • Check the maximum mode supported by the XPS model, adapter or dock, cable and monitor together.
  • Use the monitor’s native input mode rather than a conversion path with a lower limit.
  • Replace a cable whose rating is unknown, especially for 4K, 5K, 8K or high-refresh operation.
  • When using multiple monitors, test each display alone. If each works individually but not at the desired combined modes, the multi-display limit is likely the deciding factor.

The laptop does not charge

A USB-C display connection and charging are separate functions. Confirm that the adapter or dock explicitly supports power pass-through, that its power input is connected, and that its wattage is appropriate for the XPS. Dell’s documentation cautions that some USB-C or Thunderbolt adapters cannot charge the laptop while carrying video.

Only one of two monitors appears

  1. Check whether the XPS model and dock support two simultaneous displays at the resolutions you selected.
  2. Verify that each monitor is connected to an output type supported for simultaneous use; some docks impose output-combination rules.
  3. Open Windows display settings and select Detect.
  4. Connect one monitor directly to the XPS and leave the other on the dock. This isolates a dock-output limitation from a laptop or monitor problem.
  5. Lower the resolution or refresh rate temporarily. If the second display appears, the original combination exceeded the supported mode.

The connection works intermittently

  • Reseat the adapter, dock host cable and monitor cable.
  • Use the same input-selection check after the laptop wakes from sleep.
  • Remove unnecessary adapters or extension links so the signal path contains as few conversions as possible.
  • Consult the adapter or dock documentation for host compatibility, power requirements, supported display count and display-mode limits.

Practical decision guide

  • USB-C or Thunderbolt monitor and one screen: use a direct video-capable USB-C or Thunderbolt connection.
  • HDMI monitor and one screen: use a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter and a suitable HDMI cable.
  • DisplayPort monitor and one screen: use a compatible USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter or a dock with DisplayPort output.
  • Two or more monitors, or several desk peripherals: use a dock only after checking its display-count, resolution, refresh-rate and charging specifications against the exact XPS model.
  • Need charging through the same accessory: require explicit power-pass-through support; do not infer it from the presence of USB-C.

The reliable method is always the same: identify the XPS 13 generation, confirm video support on the chosen port, match the monitor input with the correct adapter or cable, and verify the complete chain’s display and power limits. That avoids the most common mistake—buying an accessory that fits physically but cannot deliver the required video mode or charge the laptop.
