Start with the CRT television’s input panel. If the console or computer has a matching analog output, connect it directly. If the source has HDMI only and the CRT has composite RCA inputs, use a powered HDMI-to-composite AV converter; an HDMI-to-RCA cable without active electronics will not perform that conversion. A CRT with only an antenna/RF socket needs an additional composite-to-RF modulator after the video conversion. In every case, match the source’s video standard and supported mode to the television before buying hardware.
Identify every input on the CRT first
The ports on the television determine the entire connection path. Look at the back and side panels, then check the television’s manual for the exact labels and supported formats. Connector shape alone is not proof that two devices can exchange a signal.

Composite RCA (CVBS)
Composite is usually a yellow RCA socket for video, alongside red and white RCA sockets for right- and left-channel audio. This is the simplest analog input to use with an older console or with the output of an HDMI-to-composite converter. The yellow plug carries video only; it does not carry sound.

S-Video
S-Video uses a small multi-pin connector and separates the luminance and chrominance portions of the picture. It is not the same signal as composite, so a yellow RCA plug cannot be inserted into an S-Video socket without the appropriate adapter or converter. A source must actually provide S-Video for this input to be useful.

Component video (YPbPr)
Component uses three video RCA connections, commonly colored green, blue and red, plus separate red and white audio connections. The red video socket can be mistaken for the red audio socket, so follow the labels rather than the colors alone. Component and composite are different signal types; plugging a composite output into a component input normally produces no usable picture.
SCART
Some regional CRT models use a large SCART connector. SCART can carry several analog formats, and the television’s manual must identify which pins and modes that particular socket accepts. A passive pin adapter may change the physical connector without converting the signal.
Antenna or RF
An RF or antenna socket accepts a modulated television-frequency signal, not baseband composite video. If it is the only input, the final stage must be an RF modulator and the television must be tuned to the modulator’s channel. The exact channel and tuning procedure vary by equipment and region.
Match the source output to the CRT input
Use this decision table before purchasing anything. “Direct” means the source already produces the analog format that the television accepts.

Connect a source that already has analog output
Older consoles and some computers provide composite, S-Video or component output through a model-specific cable. A direct analog connection avoids an HDMI conversion stage, but the source still has to output a mode the CRT can display.
- Turn off the console or computer and the television.
- Connect the video plug or plugs to the matching television input. For composite, connect yellow to the television’s video input.
- Connect red and white plugs to the television’s right and left audio inputs. Sony’s composite instructions use this yellow-video/red-and-white-audio arrangement.
- Connect the cable’s other end to the exact output socket specified for the source model. Do not assume a cable from a different console generation has the same wiring.
- Turn on the television and source, then press the television’s Source, Input or AV control until the connected input is selected. Philips documentation describes selecting the connected device with the television’s Source control; the wording and button location vary by set.
If the screen remains blank, inspect the source’s video-output setting. The PlayStation 3 manual, for example, lists NTSC 480i and 480p and PAL 576i and 576p options for standard-definition outputs. It also says that available modes depend on console region and instructs users to select resolutions supported by the connected television. Those choices apply to that console, not automatically to every modern source.
Connect an HDMI-only console, PC or streaming device to composite
The usual route is an active HDMI-to-composite AV converter. It receives the digital HDMI signal, converts it to analog standard-definition video, and exposes composite video and audio outputs. A passive cable that merely has an HDMI plug at one end and RCA plugs at the other cannot do that conversion.
Step-by-step wiring
- Put the source, converter and CRT close enough for short, secure cables, and switch all equipment off.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the console, computer or streaming device’s HDMI output to the converter’s HDMI input. Confirm the labels; connecting to an HDMI output on the converter reverses the intended direction.
- Connect the converter’s yellow RCA video output to the CRT’s yellow video input.
- Connect the converter’s red and white audio outputs to the CRT’s right and left audio inputs.
- Connect the converter’s supplied power cable if it requires external power. A converter that is not powered may show no picture or may fail to pass audio.
- Turn on the CRT and select its AV or composite input.
- Turn on the source and set its display output to a mode the converter documents as supported. If the source offers a manual resolution or refresh-rate choice, begin with a standard-definition setting rather than an unlisted high-resolution mode.
Check these specifications before buying
| Specification | Why it matters | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Signal direction | Many inexpensive adapters are designed for the opposite conversion | Does it explicitly accept HDMI input and output composite AV? |
| Analog standard | NTSC and PAL use different timing and color systems | Does it support the television’s regional standard? |
| Accepted input modes | A converter may reject a source mode even when the connector fits | Are the source’s resolution and refresh rate listed? |
| Output mode | The CRT needs a standard-definition analog signal | Does the unit state whether it outputs 480i, 576i or another compatible mode? |
| Audio | Composite video alone carries no sound | Are left/right analog audio outputs included, and do they carry the source audio? |
| Power | Active conversion requires electronics | Does it use USB or another external supply, and is that supply included? |
| Latency and image processing | Extra processing can be noticeable in games | Is input lag documented? If not, treat gaming latency as unknown rather than assuming zero delay. |
No particular current HDMI-to-composite model is established here as a tested winner. Compare the specifications above and retain the packaging or return option until the converter works with both your source and television.

If the CRT has only an RF input
An RF-only set cannot accept the yellow composite plug directly. Use two conversion stages:
- Convert the source’s HDMI output to composite with an active HDMI-to-composite converter.
- Feed the converter’s composite video and audio into a composite-to-RF modulator.
- Connect the modulator’s RF output to the CRT’s antenna socket.
- Set the modulator to its documented channel and tune the CRT to that channel using the television’s channel controls.
This route introduces more equipment and more opportunities for incompatibility. Current modulator instructions, channel behavior and regional tuning details were not established for a particular product, so follow the manuals for the exact converter, modulator and television rather than relying on a generic channel number.
PC-specific setup considerations
A computer is often less forgiving than a console because its operating system may default to a high-resolution digital mode. After connecting the converter, open the display settings and select the external display represented by the HDMI connection. Choose only a resolution and refresh rate that the converter lists as supported, then apply the setting while the CRT is already on its composite input.

If the picture disappears after changing the mode, wait for the operating system’s automatic rollback or reconnect the computer to a modern monitor and restore a supported setting. The converter cannot make a standard-definition CRT display fine detail from a high-resolution desktop; text and modern interfaces may be difficult to read even when the connection is electrically correct.

Streaming-device considerations
Most current streaming players expose HDMI rather than composite. Their connection path is therefore the same active HDMI-to-composite route described above. Verify that the converter accepts the player’s negotiated HDMI mode and that it produces an analog standard compatible with the CRT. Then select the CRT’s AV input and use the streaming player’s normal on-screen setup.
If the player’s startup screen appears but a particular app or video does not, check the player’s display-output settings and the converter’s documented input limits before replacing cables. A connector that fits does not establish that every source mode will be converted.

A CRT television remains a standard-definition display after conversion. An adapter can change the signal format, but it cannot turn the set into a high-resolution monitor or recreate detail that the CRT cannot resolve.

| A Sony television support page lists RF/composite as 480i for that model and lists additional modes for S-Video. | Some CRT inputs and models are limited to interlaced standard definition. | It does not define the capabilities of every CRT. |
| The PlayStation 3 manual lists NTSC 480i/480p and PAL 576i/576p options for standard-definition outputs. | Console region and selected output mode affect compatibility. | Those modes are not universal settings for modern consoles, PCs or streaming players. |
| RetroTINK documentation lists 240p, 288p, 480i and 576i inputs and says 480p and higher inputs will not work. | Some converters accept only standard-definition signals and may reject progressive high-resolution input. | That device is for converting analog retro-console inputs to digital video, not for sending HDMI to a CRT. |
Interlaced output can look softer or flicker during motion, and the final image depends on the CRT, converter and source. Do not use a retro-console-to-modern-display scaler as an HDMI-to-CRT substitute. RetroTINK’s own documentation states: “The RT2X only supports standard definition signals. 480p and above inputs will not work.” Its documented direction is the reverse of the connection needed here, and its product page identifies it as a legacy product.

Gaming latency and image-quality trade-offs
For games, an active converter may add processing delay, soften the picture or alter aspect-ratio handling. The available documentation establishes the importance of checking format, direction and supported modes, but it does not provide a verified head-to-head latency or image-quality test of current HDMI-to-composite converters. Treat undocumented latency as unknown.
A direct analog connection, when the source genuinely provides the required output, removes the HDMI conversion stage. That does not guarantee a perfect image: the television still limits resolution, and the source’s regional and resolution settings must remain compatible.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No picture and no sound | Wrong CRT input, unpowered converter or reversed HDMI direction | Select the connected AV input, confirm converter power, and make sure HDMI enters the converter’s input. |
| Picture but no sound | Red/white audio plugs are misplaced or the converter is not carrying audio | Connect red to right and white to left; check the source and converter audio settings. |
| Sound but no picture | Yellow plug is in the wrong socket or composite is connected to a component input | Move the yellow plug to the labeled composite video input and verify the television mode. |
| Rolling, tinted or unstable picture | NTSC/PAL mismatch or an unsupported output mode | Confirm the regional standard and choose a documented 480i/576i-compatible mode where available. |
| Blank screen after changing console settings | The source is outputting a mode the CRT or converter cannot display | Reset the source’s video configuration using its manual, then select a supported mode. |
| Image flickers in an interlaced mode | Interlaced processing or converter behavior | Check whether the converter documents 480i/576i handling; flicker can be a limitation rather than a cable fault. |
| RF television remains blank | No RF modulation or the CRT is tuned to the wrong channel | Add the required composite-to-RF stage and tune according to that modulator’s instructions. |
Use this order for a systematic check
- Confirm the CRT is switched to the physical input that carries the signal. Cycle through its AV or Source choices.
- Trace the signal direction from source output to converter input, converter output to television input, and—only for an RF-only set—modulator output to antenna input.
- Check every plug by its label, not only by color. Composite video and component video are different signals.
- Verify power to every active device.
- Check NTSC/PAL compatibility and the source’s selected resolution or refresh rate.
- Test with the simplest supported mode and a known-good cable before changing several settings at once.
- If a console allows a video-output reset, use the procedure in its manual. The PlayStation guidance warns that mismatched output settings can blank the image and describes resetting the output configuration.
Some retro systems generate non-standard signals that particular televisions, converters or capture equipment cannot display. Elgato’s legacy-hardware guidance is a general compatibility caution and explicitly may not apply to current hardware; use the manuals for the devices in your own chain.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying a passive HDMI-to-RCA lead and expecting it to perform digital-to-analog conversion.
- Using a converter designed for composite-to-HDMI when the required direction is HDMI-to-composite.
- Assuming a yellow composite cable can be connected to a green component-video input.
- Ignoring NTSC/PAL differences because the plugs physically fit.
- Choosing a source resolution that the converter or CRT does not document as supported.
- Forgetting that an RF-only television needs modulation after composite conversion.
- Expecting standard-definition CRT hardware to display modern high-resolution detail.
- Assuming an adapter has no gaming latency when the manufacturer provides no latency specification.
- Buying a retro-console-to-modern-display scaler for an HDMI-source-to-CRT connection. Its signal direction is opposite.
Final pre-purchase checklist
- Photograph or write down every input on the CRT.
- Record the source’s available outputs and the exact console, computer or streaming-device model.
- Choose a direct analog cable whenever both devices support the same analog format.
- For HDMI-only sources, select an active HDMI-to-composite converter with the correct direction, regional standard, supported input mode, analog audio output and power supply.
- For RF-only televisions, budget for a separate composite-to-RF modulator and follow its channel-tuning instructions.
- Read both the television and source manuals before changing output settings.
- Expect a standard-definition image and treat latency, flicker and scaling behavior as converter-dependent unless documented.
