How to connect a Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar to a TV: HDMI eARC, optical, and Bluetooth

Use an HDMI cable from the TV’s port labeled ARC or eARC to the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar’s HDMI (eARC) port. That is Bose’s documented way to return television audio to this model. The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar’s connection guide does not document an optical input, so an optical-only TV has no verified connection path for this soundbar. Bluetooth is intended for pairing a phone or computer as an audio source, not for replacing the TV’s ARC/eARC connection.

What you need before connecting the soundbar

Check the ports and equipment before changing settings. The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar is a model sold from 2026, and its instructions are not interchangeable with instructions for older Bose soundbar models.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • A TV with an HDMI socket labeled ARC or eARC.
  • A working HDMI cable. Bose recommends a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet when troubleshooting connection failures.
  • The Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar and its power cable.
  • The Bose app on a phone or tablet for product and Wi-Fi setup.

Look at the labels printed beside the TV’s HDMI sockets rather than choosing the first available HDMI input. A regular HDMI input does not provide the Audio Return Channel needed to send the TV’s sound back to the soundbar.

Before you begin, note which HDMI socket is marked ARC or eARC and make sure you can reach both devices without sharply bending the cable. Disconnecting other HDMI equipment temporarily can make the first setup easier, especially if several devices use CEC control commands. You can reconnect those devices after the soundbar produces TV audio.

Connect the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar with HDMI eARC

Follow this sequence with the TV switched off. The TV can be turned on after the cable and power connections are complete.

  1. Find the soundbar port. On the back of the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar, locate the socket labeled HDMI (eARC).
  2. Connect the HDMI cable to the soundbar. Insert one end firmly into that HDMI (eARC) socket.
  3. Use the correct TV socket. Plug the other end into the television’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC. Do not use an unlabeled HDMI input unless the TV documentation identifies it as the ARC/eARC port.
  4. Connect power. Plug in the soundbar. Bose’s setup instructions say it turns on automatically after it is connected to power.
  5. Turn on the TV and select its internal source. Start with a broadcast channel, built-in streaming app, or another source whose audio is produced by the TV.
  6. Complete setup in the Bose app. Add the product, follow the Wi-Fi prompts, and confirm in the app that the soundbar is connected to eARC.

ARC and eARC are audio-return functions built into HDMI. They let the TV send the audio from its tuner, built-in apps, and HDMI-connected equipment back through the single HDMI cable to the soundbar. You do not need to run a separate audio cable when the TV and soundbar are connected through the designated ARC/eARC sockets.

The connection is TV-centered. Video remains connected to and selected on the television, while the soundbar receives the corresponding audio over the return channel. If you change from a TV app to a console or streaming box, change the TV’s HDMI source as usual; the soundbar does not need a separate input selection for each wired device.

Finish setup in the Bose app

The app-led setup is useful even when the HDMI cable is already carrying sound. It associates the soundbar with your network, applies the product setup flow, and gives you a place to confirm the eARC connection.

  1. Open the Bose app while the soundbar is powered on.
  2. Choose the option to add a product.
  3. Select the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar when it appears.
  4. Follow the app’s Wi-Fi and account prompts.
  5. When the connection check appears, verify that the soundbar is shown as connected to eARC.

App setup and TV audio are related but separate checks. The app can discover and configure the product while the TV is still sending sound to its internal speakers if the HDMI cable or output setting is wrong. Conversely, a working ARC/eARC audio link does not eliminate the app’s Wi-Fi setup steps. Treat the app confirmation as verification of the product connection, not as proof that every TV source is routed correctly.

If the app cannot find the product, keep the phone near the soundbar, make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled on the phone, and restart the setup flow. App discovery problems are separate from an HDMI audio-routing problem; a successful app setup does not correct a cable plugged into the wrong TV socket.

Where to connect a streaming box, console, or Blu-ray player

The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar’s model-specific guide says it has no other connections for additional devices. Connect wired video sources to the TV instead:

  • CLEANBASS TECHNOLOGY: CleanBass Technology gives deeper, more powerful bass that stays crisp at any volume.
  • ATTUNE TO ANY ROOM: CustomTune Technology automatically adjusts the sound to your space and position for consistently balanced, optimized performance.

  • EASY CONTROL: Enjoy complete control by touch, app, or voice commands. Making it easy to play, pause, and personalize your surround sound from anywhere in the home.
  1. Plug the streaming box, console, disc player, or other HDMI source into a regular HDMI input on the TV.
  2. Leave the soundbar connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC socket.
  3. Switch the TV to the source you want to use.
  4. Let the TV return that source’s audio through ARC/eARC to the soundbar.

Do not try to use the soundbar as an HDMI switch for these devices. Its documented arrangement is TV-centered: the TV handles video switching, while the ARC/eARC link carries the resulting audio to the soundbar.

This arrangement also avoids a common mistake: plugging a console into a second socket on the soundbar that is not present on this model. If a source has picture but no sound, first confirm that the TV itself is receiving the source and that its audio output remains set to the HDMI ARC/eARC system.

Can you use optical instead of HDMI eARC?

Not through a documented connection on this model. Bose’s Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar connection instructions do not list an optical input and state that the soundbar has no other connections for additional devices. Therefore, a television with only an optical output does not have the TV-audio connection described for the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar.

Do not copy optical setup steps written for another Bose soundbar, including an older model with a different rear-panel layout. Do not treat an optical-to-HDMI adapter as a verified solution: the available model-specific instructions do not establish that such an adapter will work with the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar, and an adapter cannot create the control and audio-return behavior of a native ARC/eARC port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your TV has both optical and HDMI sockets, use the HDMI socket labeled ARC or eARC. If it has no ARC/eARC socket, check with the TV manufacturer whether another HDMI port is actually ARC-capable or whether the television needs to be replaced for this soundbar setup.

Optical advice found for a different Bose product may be technically correct for that product and still be wrong here. Compare the exact product name and rear-panel labels before buying a cable. For the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar, the documented connection list is the deciding limitation, not the fact that the television happens to offer optical output.

Can you connect the TV with Bluetooth?

Bluetooth pairing is documented for a wireless source device such as a phone or computer. Bose’s instructions do not describe Bluetooth as the TV connection procedure or as a replacement for ARC/eARC. Use it when you want to play audio stored on, or streamed from, a compatible source device.

  3. On the phone or computer, open Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
  4. Select Bose LS Ultra Soundbar, or the custom name assigned during setup.
  5. Start playback from the desired app or program on the paired device.

Bluetooth can be useful as a secondary listening option, but it does not give the TV the same documented audio-return path as HDMI eARC. Keep the HDMI connection in place for television viewing. Pairing a phone also does not change the TV’s audio-output setting; switch back to the TV’s HDMI audio system when you finish listening from Bluetooth.

HDMI eARC, optical, and Bluetooth compared

Method What the Lifestyle Ultra documentation establishes Best use Important limitation
HDMI ARC/eARC The soundbar’s HDMI (eARC) port connects to the TV port labeled ARC or eARC. TV channels, built-in TV apps, and HDMI devices routed through the TV. The television must have an ARC/eARC port, and the cable must be connected to that specific socket.
Optical No optical TV input is listed for this model. Not an established TV connection for the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar. An optical-only TV has no documented connection route; instructions for other Bose models do not apply.
Bluetooth Bluetooth pairing is described for a wireless source such as a phone or computer. Music or other audio played directly from a paired device. Bose does not document it as the TV audio path or as a substitute for ARC/eARC.

The practical choice depends on the source, not just the cable you already own. Use HDMI ARC/eARC when the source is the TV or a device connected to the TV. Use Bluetooth when the source is a paired wireless device. Optical is not a third equivalent option for this particular soundbar, because the model-specific documentation does not provide that input.

Why is there no sound from the TV?

Work through these checks in order. Change one item at a time so you can identify what fixed the problem.

1. Verify the physical ports

Confirm that the cable runs from the soundbar’s HDMI (eARC) socket to the TV’s socket labeled ARC or eARC. A standard HDMI input can carry video into the TV but cannot perform the required audio return. Reseat both plugs so they are fully inserted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Set the TV to send audio over HDMI

Open the TV’s audio, sound-output, or setup menu and select HDMI ARC/eARC or an equivalent external-speaker option. Menu names vary by manufacturer, so use the TV maker’s instructions for the exact path. If the TV offers separate choices for internal speakers, receiver, HDMI-CEC, and ARC/eARC, choose the option that routes sound to the HDMI-connected audio system.

3. Select the TV source on the soundbar

If the soundbar is on another source, hold Play/Pause on the bar for two seconds to change the source, as specified in Bose’s model-specific troubleshooting guidance. Then start audio from a TV channel or built-in app and test again.

4. Power-cycle the television

Disconnect the TV from power for 30 seconds, reconnect it, and allow it to boot fully. This can rebuild the HDMI handshake between the TV and soundbar. After the TV restarts, check the audio-output setting again.

5. Check HDMI-CEC conflicts

CEC lets HDMI devices exchange control commands. A streaming box, game console, or disc player can sometimes send conflicting commands. Temporarily disable CEC on other HDMI-connected devices, then test the TV-to-soundbar link. The exact CEC label differs between TV manufacturers and is not the same as the ARC/eARC port label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Replace the HDMI cable for testing

Try another High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet. Bose lists this as a troubleshooting step when the connection still fails. Replace the cable only after checking the port and TV settings; a new cable will not make a non-ARC HDMI socket carry return audio.

7. Isolate the TV

Disconnect other HDMI devices temporarily and test only the TV, the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar, and the replacement cable. If sound returns, reconnect the other devices one at a time to identify the source of the CEC or handshake conflict.

8. Recheck the source after every change

Use a TV channel or built-in TV app for each test rather than changing sources at the same time. Once that basic signal works, test the console or streaming box through the TV. This separates a TV-to-soundbar fault from a problem with one external source.

Common setup mistakes and their fixes

  • Using a regular HDMI input: Move the cable to the socket marked ARC or eARC on the TV.
  • Looking for an optical socket on the soundbar: This model’s documented connections do not include optical; use HDMI ARC/eARC instead.
  • Plugging a console into the soundbar: Connect the console to the TV, then allow ARC/eARC to return its audio.
  • Expecting Bluetooth to carry all TV sound: Pair Bluetooth for a phone or computer; use HDMI for the TV.
  • Changing several settings at once: Restore the documented HDMI path first, then test before changing CEC or replacing the cable.
  • Assuming another Bose model has identical ports: Follow the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar guide, not instructions for an older or differently named model.
  • Testing only an external HDMI device: First test the TV’s own tuner or app so you know whether the ARC/eARC return itself works.
  • Leaving a second Bluetooth device connected: A steady blue light means another device is connected; hold Bluetooth for five seconds to begin a new pairing.

When this setup is not possible

The documented arrangement requires a TV with an HDMI ARC/eARC port. If your television has only ordinary HDMI inputs and an optical output, the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar’s published connection instructions do not provide a supported TV-audio route. Before buying accessories, confirm the exact TV model and inspect every HDMI label; some televisions place ARC on only one socket. If no ARC/eARC port exists, contact Bose or the TV manufacturer for model-specific compatibility advice rather than assuming an optical converter will work.

Do not infer compatibility from a television’s ability to send video over HDMI. Video input and audio return are different functions, and only the labeled ARC/eARC socket provides the return channel described by Bose. Likewise, a Bluetooth menu on the television does not establish that Bose documents the TV as a Bluetooth source for this model.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect my Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar to my TV?

Connect the soundbar’s HDMI (eARC) port to the television’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC, power on the soundbar, select TV audio output in the television menu, and complete product setup in the Bose app.

Can I use optical instead of HDMI eARC?

Optical is not listed as an input for the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar. Bose’s model-specific instructions require the TV’s ARC/eARC connection, so an optical-only television has no documented route.

Can I connect the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar to my TV with Bluetooth?

Bose documents Bluetooth pairing for a wireless source such as a phone or computer, not as the TV audio connection. Keep HDMI ARC/eARC connected for television sound.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is there no sound from my TV?

Confirm both ends of the HDMI cable, make sure the TV socket is labeled ARC or eARC, select HDMI ARC/eARC in the TV’s audio menu, select the TV source on the soundbar, and power-cycle the TV for 30 seconds. If needed, disable CEC on other HDMI devices and test another High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet.

Where do I plug in a game console or streaming box?

Plug the device into a regular HDMI input on the TV. The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar has no documented additional-device connections; the TV sends that device’s audio back over ARC/eARC.

What does a steady blue Bluetooth light mean?

It indicates that another Bluetooth device is connected. Hold the soundbar’s Bluetooth button for five seconds until the light pulses blue, then choose Bose LS Ultra Soundbar from the new device’s Bluetooth settings.

Does a regular HDMI port on the TV work for the soundbar?

No. The cable must connect to the TV’s specifically labeled ARC or eARC port so the television can return audio to the soundbar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an optical-to-HDMI adapter solve an optical-only TV?

It is not a verified workaround in the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar’s model-specific instructions. Bose does not document an optical input or an adapter-based connection for this model.

The Bottom Line

For the Bose Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar, use HDMI only: connect its HDMI (eARC) port to the TV’s ARC/eARC port and finish setup in the Bose app. Optical is not a documented input, and Bluetooth is for pairing a phone or computer rather than replacing the TV audio-return link. If there is no sound, verify the labeled ports and TV output setting first, then power-cycle, isolate CEC devices, and test another High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet.
