For most Coolify installations, keep Traefik. It is the default integrated proxy, has the broadest Coolify documentation, and is the proxy used by the Coolify core team in production. Choose Caddy when you specifically need a Caddy feature or already operate Caddy confidently. Both can publish applications over HTTP and HTTPS, but their labels, configuration files, and custom-routing syntax are different.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Coolify, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
A working public route depends on more than selecting a proxy: DNS must resolve to the server running the resource, inbound TCP ports 80 and 443 must be reachable, the application must listen on the expected container port, and the proxy and application must share a Docker network. This guide covers initial configuration, custom routing, TLS, switching proxies, multi-server deployments, and a fault-isolation sequence for domains that do not load.

Choose Traefik or Caddy before changing anything
Coolify integrates both proxies, but they are not two interchangeable skins over one configuration format. Traefik creates routers, services, and middleware from Coolify resource domains and container metadata. Caddy uses Caddy Docker labels and Caddyfile-style snippets. A configuration written for one proxy must be recreated in the other.
| Decision | Traefik | Caddy |
|---|---|---|
| Coolify role | Default integrated reverse proxy | Integrated alternative |
| Best fit | General deployments, established Coolify workflows, and the widest documentation | Teams with a Caddy-specific requirement or existing Caddy expertise |
| Container used by Coolify | Coolify-managed Traefik proxy | lucaslorentz/caddy-docker-proxy running as coolify-proxy |
| Custom configuration | Dashboard Configuration page for the main compose definition; Dynamic Configurations for file-provider YAML | Caddy configuration plus *.caddy snippets in the Caddy dynamic directory |
| Labels and syntax | Traefik labels and Traefik middleware/router/service syntax | Caddy labels and Caddy syntax; Traefik labels do not apply |
| Ports | HTTP 80 and HTTPS 443 | HTTP 80, HTTPS 443, and UDP 443 for HTTP/3 |
Do not switch merely to make a routine domain work. A broken route is usually caused by DNS, a firewall, a wrong target port, a missing Docker-network connection, or stale labels. Switching changes the proxy implementation and temporarily removes every route on that server.

Understand the path a request must follow
A browser request reaches the resource only when every segment describes the same destination. The hostname in DNS must point to the server that runs the application. The server must accept the public port. Coolify must associate the hostname and protocol with the resource. The proxy must discover the resource on a shared Docker network and forward to the application’s listening container port.
Public and internal ports are different
Visitors normally connect to HTTPS port 443 (or HTTP port 80 before a redirect). Your application may listen on another internal port, such as the port exposed by its container. Set that internal value as the target port when it differs from the application’s default. Do not tell users to append the internal port to the public URL unless you have deliberately exposed that port; the proxy maps the public endpoint to the container internally.
Requirements before deployment
- Create a DNS record for the application hostname that resolves to the resource server.
- Permit inbound TCP 80 and TCP 443 in the server firewall, cloud security group, and any upstream firewall.
- Confirm that the application actually listens on the configured container port and on an interface reachable from the proxy.
- Ensure the proxy and destination container share a Docker network.
- Choose the correct protocol in the resource domain setting:
http://for an HTTP origin orhttps://when the origin itself expects TLS.
Certificate challenge choices
HTTP-based ACME validation needs port 80 publicly reachable, even when you intend to serve only HTTPS. If port 80 cannot be opened, or if you need a wildcard certificate, use an ACME DNS challenge. The DNS provider credential should be limited to the zone permissions required to create and remove challenge records; do not use a broad account token when a scoped token is available.
Configure the integrated Traefik proxy
Traefik is normally already selected on a new Coolify server. The dashboard controls its generated compose definition and gives you a place to add dynamic file-provider configuration.
1. Inspect the selected proxy
- In Coolify, open Servers.
- Select the server that runs the application.
- Open Proxy and review the selected proxy and generated configuration.
- Confirm that the proxy is running before troubleshooting an individual resource.
Coolify’s Traefik main compose file is stored at /data/coolify/proxy/docker-compose.yml. File-provider material is stored under /data/coolify/proxy/dynamic/ and mounted into the proxy at /traefik/dynamic/.

2. Publish an application domain
- Point the hostname’s DNS record at the resource server and wait for the record to resolve correctly.
- Open the application or service in Coolify and add the domain.
- Select
http://orhttps://to match the application’s origin protocol. - Enter a target port when the application does not use its default internal port.
- Save the resource and redeploy it so Coolify regenerates the route and labels.
Traefik derives routers from the resource domain and container port, connects to the Docker networks required by the route, and uses the letsencrypt resolver for automatic TLS where the certificate prerequisites are satisfied.
3. Add reusable Traefik behavior through Dynamic Configurations
Use Proxy > Dynamic Configurations for behavior that should be loaded without replacing the generated proxy compose definition. Typical uses include reusable middleware, custom certificates, authenticated routes, dashboards, and load-balancer services.
Use the proxy’s dashboard Configuration page for changes to the main compose configuration. Coolify warns that edits made directly on disk are not synchronized back to the UI and can be overwritten when the proxy starts or restarts. A change to the main compose configuration therefore belongs in the dashboard and requires a proxy restart.
4. Expose a Traefik dashboard safely
Give the Traefik dashboard its own hostname rather than placing it on an application path. Enable secure dashboard mode, create an authenticated HTTPS dynamic route, and verify the authentication middleware before sharing the address. Never expose Traefik’s insecure mode on a public interface. Do not mount the dashboard at /api on the same hostname used by the Coolify dashboard; that path can collide with Coolify’s own API routes.
5. Configure a Traefik load balancer
For a custom load-balanced service, every upstream URL must be reachable from the coolify-proxy container, not merely from your laptop or from the public internet. In a dynamic YAML file, define the public domain, routers, a service, the upstream servers, and an optional health check. After deployment, make requests through the public hostname, stop one upstream to confirm that traffic fails over as intended, restore it, and inspect proxy logs for connection or health-check errors.

Configure Caddy in Coolify
Caddy is supported, but it has a smaller Coolify documentation footprint than Traefik. Coolify runs lucaslorentz/caddy-docker-proxy as coolify-proxy; it listens on TCP ports 80 and 443 and also uses UDP 443 for HTTP/3. Caddy’s files are kept below /data/coolify/proxy/caddy/.
1. Select and start Caddy
- Open Servers in the Coolify dashboard.
- Select the server and open Proxy.
- Use the proxy controls to select Caddy, then start it.
- Wait for the proxy to report that it is running before redeploying resources.
When Caddy is selected, redeploy each affected application so Coolify applies the Caddy labels and regenerates the route for the new proxy. Existing Traefik labels do not create Caddy routes.
2. Use Caddy configuration and dynamic snippets
Caddy’s dynamic snippets use *.caddy files in /data/coolify/proxy/caddy/dynamic/. Use Caddy labels and Caddy syntax for custom handlers, matchers, and upstream behavior; copying a Traefik router or middleware block into a Caddy file will not work.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Coolify-generated files such as Caddyfile, coolify.caddy, and the default request handler are read-only in the dashboard. Advanced Caddy features may require a change to the proxy compose configuration, a custom Caddy image that contains the needed module, or an additional dynamic file. Keep those changes in the supported configuration locations and redeploy resources after label changes.
3. Apply the same domain prerequisites
Adding a Caddy domain still requires DNS, reachable ports, a correct protocol, a target port when needed, and a shared Docker network. Caddy does not remove any of the network or certificate requirements described above.

Switch from Traefik to Caddy (or back)
A proxy switch is a server-wide event. Public routes on that server are unavailable while the old proxy is stopped and the replacement is starting, and custom settings from the old proxy are not translated automatically.
- Open Servers > select the server > Proxy.
- Stop the current proxy.
- Wait until its status shows Proxy Exited; do not start the replacement while the old container still owns the ports.
- Choose Switch Proxy, select Traefik or Caddy, and start the new proxy.
- Redeploy or restart every affected application and service so the labels and network connections target the new proxy.
- Recreate any custom middleware, certificates, dashboard routes, or load-balancer definitions in the replacement proxy’s syntax.
- Test at least one HTTP hostname and one HTTPS hostname, then inspect proxy logs for any route that fails.
For a planned switch, schedule the interruption, record the old proxy’s custom settings, and keep a rollback plan: select the previous proxy again, start it, redeploy the resources, and verify the original route.

Test a representative application instead of assuming that a running proxy means every resource is healthy.
- Resolve the hostname and confirm that it returns the resource server’s address.
- Check that TCP 80 and TCP 443 are permitted from the public network.
- Open the HTTP URL and record whether it serves content or redirects to HTTPS as intended.
- Open the HTTPS URL and inspect the certificate hostname, validity, and expiration.
- Confirm that the application responds on the configured target port from the proxy’s network.
- Review Servers > server > Proxy > Logs while making a request.
- After changing labels or network membership, redeploy or restart the resource so the proxy receives the new metadata.
Troubleshoot a domain or HTTPS route in the right order
Follow the request path from the outside in. Changing proxy rules before checking DNS or the target port often hides the original problem.
| Symptom | Check | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Hostname resolves to the wrong machine or does not resolve | DNS record and the server address running the resource | Correct the record and wait for the intended resolver result before testing the proxy. |
| Connection times out on HTTP or HTTPS | Inbound TCP 80 and 443 in host firewall, security group, and upstream firewall | Allow the required ports; port 80 is also needed for HTTP ACME validation. |
| Proxy container is stopped | Servers > server > Proxy status | Start the selected proxy and wait for it to become healthy before redeploying resources. |
| Proxy runs but returns a default or not-found response | Generated route, resource labels, selected proxy type, and domain spelling | Save the domain again and redeploy the resource. Recreate labels in Caddy syntax after a switch. |
| 502 or upstream connection error | Target port, application listening address, and shared Docker network | Set the actual container port, make the application listen on a reachable interface, and reconnect both containers to the required network. |
| Certificate issuance fails | DNS result, port 80 reachability, and challenge method | Open port 80 for HTTP challenge, or configure a DNS challenge for wildcard or port-80-blocked deployments with a narrowly scoped provider token. |
| Route worked before a proxy change | Whether the resource was redeployed and whether custom settings were translated | Redeploy to apply the new proxy labels and recreate old Traefik or Caddy configuration in the new syntax. |
When a route fails, inspect the proxy logs after each change. A log entry showing no matching router points toward the domain or labels; an upstream connection error points toward the network or target port; a certificate challenge error points toward DNS, port 80, or the ACME provider configuration.
Keep proxy types consistent across multiple servers
In a multi-server Coolify deployment, labels generated for the primary server must match the proxy type on the other servers that consume those labels. Traefik labels do not work on a Caddy server, and Caddy labels do not work on Traefik. Use one proxy type consistently across servers that share generated labels, or explicitly recreate the resource configuration for each server’s proxy.
Operational checklist
- Record which proxy is selected on each server before changing it.
- Use Traefik unless a Caddy-specific capability or existing Caddy operational knowledge justifies the switch.
- Keep main proxy-compose changes in the Coolify dashboard rather than editing generated files on disk.
- Put reusable Traefik behavior in Dynamic Configurations and Caddy behavior in the Caddy dynamic directory.
- Use dedicated, authenticated HTTPS hostnames for proxy dashboards; never expose insecure dashboard mode publicly.
- Limit DNS-challenge credentials to the required zone permissions.
- Redeploy resources after changing domains, labels, networks, target ports, or proxy type.
- Test both an HTTP request and an HTTPS request after every proxy switch or major configuration change.
The practical default is straightforward: leave Traefik in place, publish each domain with the correct DNS, ports, protocol, network, and container target port, and use the dashboard’s dynamic configuration features for exceptions. Choose Caddy deliberately, then recreate its routes and custom behavior with Caddy labels and snippets rather than copying Traefik configuration.
