That lets systemd relaunch the encoder after qualifying failures and start it again after a host reboot. It does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream, so check both systemd logs and YouTube’s live-stream health feedback.
Use a system service that tracks the encoder
The unit below is a pattern, not a ready-made FFmpeg command. Replace the executable, arguments, account, and working directory with values for your encoder and audio pipeline. Keep the encoder in the foreground so systemd can track the process it starts as the service’s main process; a command that daemonizes itself can leave systemd monitoring the wrong process.

The correct command depends on where the music comes from, the encoder build, and how the stream key is supplied.
Do not put a stream key or other credential in a unit file that is broadly readable. Use a permissions-controlled configuration mechanism appropriate to the host and encoder. Credential syntax varies; the exact method cannot be specified without knowing those details.
Install, enable, and inspect the service
- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-music-stream.service, adjusting its paths and command first. - Tell systemd to reread unit files, then enable the service at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-music-stream.service - Check whether systemd considers the service active:
systemctl status youtube-music-stream.service - Follow its logs to see encoder output and startup or failure messages:
journalctl -u youtube-music-stream.service -f
After editing the unit, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload before restarting the service so systemd reads the changed configuration.

Choose the restart policy that matches expected exits

Neither policy overrides an intentional systemctl stop. The systemd service manual documents these restart semantics and related service behavior at systemd.service.
Set a retry delay and handle repeated failures
RestartSec=5s makes systemd wait five seconds before an automatic retry in this example. Choose a delay that gives the encoder and connection time to recover without creating a rapid restart loop. Restart attempts are also subject to start-rate limiting through StartLimitIntervalSec= and StartLimitBurst=; the appropriate values depend on expected failure modes and recovery time. Consult the systemd.unit manual and the manual installed on the target host, since older distributions may ship different systemd versions or directive support.
If repeated failures hit the unit’s start-rate limit, inspect the logs and correct the underlying problem before clearing the failed state and starting again:

sudo systemctl start youtube-music-stream.serviceResetting the failed state does not repair a bad command, missing input, invalid credentials, or network problem; it only lets you make another start attempt.

Check YouTube stream health separately
A service marked active only tells you about the local process. The encoder might still be alive while its input has stalled, its network connection is unusable, or YouTube has rejected or lost the feed. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance to choose supported codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and keyframe settings for the actual encoder and available upstream bandwidth. YouTube also recommends RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP.
- For local process failures, inspect
systemctl statusandjournalctl. - For ingest and platform-side condition, check YouTube’s live control room and health messages.
- Do not copy a universal bitrate or resolution: select settings for the stream, encoder capabilities, and upload connection.
Troubleshoot common restart and stream problems
