Your server—not the AI—should determine the product IDs, prices, quantities, availability, and order rules before creating a Stripe Checkout Session. For a one-time order, create the Session with mode: "payment" and validated line_items, redirect the customer to Checkout, and use Stripe’s completion event to coordinate order follow-up.
How the AI-assisted purchase flow should work
- Gather intent. Let the AI help the shopper express preferences, compare options, or identify products. Treat its output as a proposal, not a payable order.
- Build an explicit cart. Present the selected products and quantities clearly so the shopper can review what they are buying.
- Validate on your server. Resolve product identifiers against your own catalog and check current prices, quantities, stock, and merchant rules in trusted application logic. Do not accept an AI-generated price or cart total as authoritative.
- Create a new Checkout Session. Your server sends the validated purchase details to Stripe. Stripe recommends creating a new Session each time the customer attempts to pay, as stated in its Checkout Sessions API reference.
- Send the shopper to payment. For hosted Checkout, redirect the customer to the Session URL returned by Stripe. Alternatively, use one of Stripe’s embedded approaches.
- Handle the completed payment. Listen for Stripe’s
checkout.session.completedevent and use it to coordinate order follow-up, such as sending a confirmation email.
Stripe’s documentation describes server-side Session creation and explicit Session configuration; treating AI output as untrusted input is an implementation recommendation based on that pattern. Stripe does not document a special AI Checkout feature or standard in the cited integration material.

Choose a Checkout interface
Stripe’s Checkout Quickstarts describe a Stripe-hosted page, an embedded payment form, and embedded components using Elements with the Checkout Sessions API. The main distinction is where the payment interface appears; confirm feature availability for your intended flow in Stripe’s current comparison material before choosing.

The referenced Quickstarts identify these approaches but do not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison. Use Stripe’s current documentation to check which capabilities apply to your specific payment flow.

Set the Session mode and line items
Choose the Session mode to match the transaction. Stripe documents payment for a one-time purchase, subscription for recurring purchases, and setup for saving payment details to charge later. Line items are required for payment and subscription modes.
For a conventional one-time ecommerce order, create the Session with mode: "payment" and pass explicit line_items built from the cart your server has validated. Stripe’s API reference documents these parameters and their mode requirements in the Session create API. Do not let an AI response supply the authoritative amount to charge.

Connect the Session to your order
Stripe’s Session create API documents fields that can connect Checkout to your application, including client_reference_id for referring to a customer or cart in internal systems and metadata for structured key-value information. It also documents customer identifiers or email, automatic tax, shipping collection and shipping options, and success or return URLs. Some fields are conditional or unavailable depending on mode and interface configuration, so select only the fields that match your actual order flow.
Stripe’s existing-customer guide describes a website button calling a server-side endpoint to create a Checkout Session. Use an appropriate internal reference to associate the Session with your pending order, then handle Stripe’s documented checkout.session.completed event for follow-up work. A browser reaching a success page is not, by itself, a reliable basis for treating an order as fulfilled.

Implementation checks before launch
- Confirm that the customer can review the actual products and quantities before payment.
- Recalculate or retrieve prices and validate availability and order rules in trusted server-side code when creating the Session.
- Create a fresh Session for each payment attempt rather than reusing one from an earlier attempt.
- Choose a Session mode that matches the purchase: one-time payment, recurring subscription, or saving payment details for later charging.
- Associate the Session with the relevant customer or cart record using suitable references or metadata.
- Use Stripe’s completion event to coordinate post-payment order work; do not treat the return page alone as proof of fulfillment.
- Check Stripe’s current documentation for conditions on fields and interface features before relying on them.
