In VS Code, install the Prettier – Code formatter extension, add Prettier to your project, select Prettier as the default formatter, and enable editor.formatOnSave. Accepted AI-generated code will then be formatted when you save its file, provided the file is supported and not excluded by your ignore rules. Prettier responds to the save event; it does not need to identify the code as AI-generated.
Set up Prettier in VS Code
- Add Prettier to the project. From the repository root, run
npm install prettier -D --save-exact. The VS Code extension documentation recommends installing it locally and pinning the version so the project and collaborators use the intended formatter. Prettier – Code formatter documentation. - Install the editor extension. In VS Code, open Extensions, search for Prettier – Code formatter, and install it. Its formatter identifier is
esbenp.prettier-vscode. Extension documentation. - Commit project formatting rules. Add a Prettier configuration file, such as
.prettierrc, at the repository root. Project configuration lets the editor and command-line formatter apply the same rules. Prettier supports multiple configuration-file formats; for JavaScript or TypeScript configuration files, make sure the export matches the project’s module setup. Prettier configuration documentation. - Enable format-on-save in the workspace. Create or edit
.vscode/settings.jsonin the repository and add:{ "editor.defaultFormatter": "esbenp.prettier-vscode", "editor.formatOnSave": true }Save an AI-generated code file in a supported language. VS Code will ask the selected formatter to format it as part of saving. Extension settings documentation.
Choose what gets formatted
Enable formatting only for selected languages
If the project uses other formatters for some file types, scope the settings to the languages that should use Prettier. VS Code settings support language-specific blocks, for example:
{
"[javascript]": {
"editor.defaultFormatter": "esbenp.prettier-vscode",
"editor.formatOnSave": true
},
"[typescript]": {
"editor.defaultFormatter": "esbenp.prettier-vscode",
"editor.formatOnSave": true
}
}
Confirm the file’s language mode in VS Code if the settings appear not to apply. The extension must support that file language and have an applicable parser. Extension documentation.
Keep editor, CLI, and project rules aligned
Prefer a committed Prettier configuration over relying only on editor preferences. VS Code settings are an extension-specific fallback when no project configuration is present; a project config gives the rules a home that command-line use and other IDEs can share. If the repository already has an .editorconfig, Prettier can translate corresponding properties into formatting configuration. Prettier configuration documentation.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Understand when “automatic” runs
The common VS Code setup is automatic on save, not necessarily automatic at the instant an AI suggestion is accepted or inserted. If the code has been accepted but the file has not been saved, save it to trigger formatting. For a one-off operation, use VS Code’s Format Document command. The documented save trigger does not establish a universal Prettier hook for every AI assistant’s acceptance event. Extension documentation.
The extension also documents a Prettier code action on save using source.fixAll.prettier. This respects editor.defaultFormatter and can be combined with ESLint save actions when the desired workflow runs Prettier before ESLint fixes. Avoid configuring multiple tools to rewrite the same formatting rules in conflicting ways. Extension documentation.

Control versions and excluded files
Use a predictable Prettier version
The VS Code extension resolves a project-local Prettier installation first when one is available. It can attempt a global module if configured to do so; if neither is available, it uses its bundled Prettier. The extension repository documents a bundled Prettier 3.x by default and support for projects using local Prettier 2.x. Pinning the project dependency helps avoid unexplained differences between the editor and command line. Extension documentation.
Ignore generated files you do not want rewritten
Add paths to .prettierignore when files should not be touched, including generated output. The ignore file applies to editor formatting and whole-project commands such as prettier --write .. If an ignored file needs a one-off format, the extension provides Format Document (Forced), which bypasses ignore status and the requirePragma requirement. Use that as an explicit exception rather than removing a useful project-wide exclusion. Extension documentation.

Use another editor or a file watcher
Prettier recommends using an editor integration and installing Prettier locally in each project. Its editor documentation covers integrations including Emacs, Vim, Helix, Sublime Text, JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio, and VS Code. Exact save triggers and settings differ by integration, so check the documentation for the editor-specific plugin. If an editor does not support Prettier, Prettier’s documentation suggests using a file watcher. Prettier editor integrations.
| Setup route | When formatting happens | Consistency and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Editor integration with format-on-save | On save, if configured by that editor’s integration | Works with the editor’s settings; a committed project config and local dependency help align it with other tools. Prettier editor documentation. |
| VS Code workspace settings | On save when editor.formatOnSave is enabled |
Workspace settings are convenient, while committed Prettier configuration carries the formatting rules across editor and CLI use. Extension documentation; configuration documentation. |
| Manual Format Document | When you explicitly invoke the command | Useful for a one-off format; it does not automatically format later saves unless format-on-save is enabled. Extension documentation. |
| File watcher | When the watcher detects a matching file change, according to its configuration | An option when the editor lacks a Prettier integration; the trigger and files in scope depend on the watcher setup. Prettier editor documentation. |
Fix common format-on-save problems
- Saving changes nothing: Check that the extension is installed and enabled, the file language is supported, and Prettier is selected in Format Document With… or via
editor.defaultFormatter. Extension documentation. - The wrong Prettier rules appear: Check for a project-local Prettier dependency and configuration file. The extension resolves the local dependency first when available, and VS Code settings are used only when no configuration file exists. Extension documentation.
- One file is skipped: Check
.prettierignore. Regular formatting skips ignored files; use Format Document (Forced) only when you deliberately want to override the exclusion for that operation. Extension documentation. - Formatting conflicts with lint fixes: Decide which tool owns formatting and order save actions deliberately. The Prettier code action can run with ESLint fixes, with Prettier before ESLint when that is the intended workflow. Extension documentation.
What Prettier does—and does not—check
Prettier formats code according to the file’s parser and project rules. Formatting does not establish that AI-generated code is correct, secure, or valid for the application. Treat formatting as a presentation step, separate from reviewing behavior, dependencies, and security.
