This makes OBS try to reconnect to YouTube’s ingest server when the network returns; it does not guarantee that YouTube will keep the same live event open or restore the same viewer session. Check YouTube Live Control Room after a drop, and restart or create a stream if the event has ended.
Configure OBS automatic reconnect
- Open the reconnect setting. In OBS, go to Settings → Advanced and turn on Automatically Reconnect. OBS forum guidance places the control in Advanced settings and suggests increasing the retry allowance for longer interruptions. Field names, defaults, and behavior can vary by OBS version, so check the settings shown in your installed version rather than relying on a fixed retry count or duration. OBS forum guidance.
- Confirm the YouTube encoder details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, make sure OBS is configured with the intended stream URL and stream key. The key authorizes YouTube to accept the encoder feed; keep it private. YouTube documents encoder setup and stream keys in its streaming settings and encoder workflow.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop. YouTube lets you configure whether the encoder starts or stops the stream. These settings do not guarantee that a dropped encoder will resume an event that YouTube has already ended. Check their state in Live Control Room as part of your setup.
- Test the complete recovery path. Before leaving a stream unattended, disconnect the network, restore it, and verify both OBS’s connection status and what viewers see on YouTube. YouTube recommends testing stream setups and backup-encoder failover; its encoder guidance covers setup and its streaming recommendations describe testing.
What to check after the internet returns
Watch both ends of the connection: OBS can report that it has reconnected while YouTube’s event or the viewer-facing stream is no longer live. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the event status, then inspect the watch page from a viewer’s perspective. If YouTube reports that the event ended, restart the encoder or create a new stream using the appropriate setup; do not assume the prior event or viewer session has resumed.

YouTube documents the encoder URL, stream key, and relevant live settings, but the cited guidance does not establish a universal outage timeout or promise that every interrupted event remains open. Plan for an operator to verify status or restart an ended event.

Match bitrate to the connection
OBS identifies dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Check that the total stream bitrate fits your available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom when planning bandwidth—this is a configuration recommendation, not a guaranteed success rate. See OBS network troubleshooting and YouTube’s streaming recommendations.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Stabilize the local network
- Use Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi where practical; OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable. An Ethernet cable for a wired OBS setup can reduce local wireless variability, but it cannot restore an ISP connection that is down.
- Check for software that may interfere with network traffic and make sure network drivers are current, as OBS recommends.
- If congestion is causing dropped frames, lowering bitrate may help the stream fit the available connection. OBS cautions that dynamic bitrate does not fix the underlying network problem and may reduce video quality.
These steps can reduce preventable drops; none repairs an upstream ISP outage. OBS’s recommendations are in its dropped-frames guidance.
Choose a recovery approach for unattended streaming
| Approach | What it addresses | Key dependency or limit |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo (#1) | Cloud-hosted playback of uploaded videos for a YouTube channel, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; the first day is free. | Plays uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo. |
| OBS automatic reconnect | Retries the encoder connection after a drop using your existing computer and OBS setup. | Depends on the computer and network being available again; it cannot ensure YouTube keeps the same event active. |
| Backup encoder | Can fail over from a primary encoder when configured and tested; YouTube recommends testing the player’s rollover. | Consider whether the backup has independent power and a viable network path. A second encoder on the same failed ISP connection does not, by itself, address that shared outage. |
YouTube’s encoder guide also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous streaming of prerecorded video without a dedicated PC. That is a different operating model from making OBS reconnect; assess a service’s content support, controls, cost, reliability, and current terms before choosing it.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 YouTube channel plays uploaded recordings rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud-based alternative: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI and cards are supported; card checkout is available worldwide. Start the free day on StreamNeo.

Troubleshooting a stream that did not resume
- OBS remains disconnected after the network is back: check OBS’s stream status, verify the intended stream URL and private stream key in the encoder setup, and confirm that the connection can sustain the configured bitrate. Retry settings cannot compensate for a still-unstable connection.
- OBS reconnects but YouTube shows the event ended: inspect the event in Live Control Room and restart the encoder or create a new stream as appropriate. Auto-start and auto-stop are configurable, not a universal guarantee of same-event recovery.
- Dropped frames recur without a full ISP outage: investigate upload capacity, local network stability, software interference, and network drivers. Try wired Ethernet and leave the upload headroom YouTube recommends; reduce bitrate only if it suits the quality trade-off.
- A backup encoder does not take over: test by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then verify that the YouTube player rolls over. For an ISP outage, also test an independent, working network path; YouTube’s failover advice does not establish protection when both encoders share the failed connection.
