Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo transition between pre-recorded videos in OBS, put each video in its own scene, choose a transition in the Scene Transitions dock, then switch to the next scene when you are ready. For a deliberate handoff, use Studio Mode to prepare the next scene before taking it live. If you instead want several files to play from one source, use OBS’s VLC Video source; a playlist plays files, but it is not the same as a transition between scenes.
Choose how the videos should play
In OBS, a scene is a layout of sources sent to your stream. A Media Source plays a local video file inside a scene, while a scene transition changes the active scene. That distinction determines which setup to use:

| Setup | Best for | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| One scene per video, with a Media Source in each | Choosing when and how to hand off between segments | You switch scenes yourself. OBS’s official guides describe transitions and media playback, but do not establish a built-in rule that switches scenes automatically when a file ends. |
| One VLC Video playlist source | Playing an ordered list of files within one source | Requires VLC installed with the same architecture as OBS. Playlist playback does not itself create a scene transition. |
Set up one scene for each video
- Create the scenes. In OBS’s Scenes dock, click the add button and create a scene for each video or segment. Give them clear names, such as “Video 1” and “Video 2.”
- Add each video file. Select a scene, then in the Sources dock click + and choose Media Source. Select the local file. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.
- Fit the source to the scene. Position and resize the video in the preview. Use the source’s transform options to fit it to the canvas if needed. Repeat for each scene, checking that the framing and audio are right.
- Review playback properties. Open the Media Source properties and check options such as Loop, Restart playback when source becomes active, and Show nothing when playback ends. OBS documents Loop as off by default and the latter two as on by default; decide whether those defaults suit your sequence. If Close file when inactive is enabled, a file may take time to load again when its scene becomes active.
Choose and configure the transition
In the Scene Transitions dock, choose a transition from the dropdown and set its duration. OBS Project documentation says Fade and Cut are available from the first launch. Its overview guide also lists Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe as additional choices available through the plus control. The available interface options can vary by installed OBS version, so check the controls in your copy.
- Cut: switches directly, with no visible blend.
- Fade: blends between scenes over the duration you set.
- Other transitions: use these when their visual movement or wipe better suits the material.
There is no single evidence-based ideal duration for a transition. Set one that fits your segment and preview it at the intended output size; avoid treating example durations in OBS documentation as universal recommendations.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Use Studio Mode for a controlled handoff
- Click Studio Mode in OBS. The live/program scene remains on the right, while the editable preview scene appears on the left.
- Select the next video’s scene in the preview pane and confirm its picture and audio without changing the live scene.
- When ready, click Transition to take the preview scene live using the selected transition. You can also configure a Quick Transition; each quick transition can have its own duration.
- Continue preparing and transitioning between scenes as needed. Test the complete order before streaming so you know exactly when each handoff will happen.
Use a playlist when you do not need scene transitions
If your goal is to play several files from one source rather than switch between separately prepared scenes, add VLC Video from the Sources dock and configure its playlist. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default. Check the playlist order and playback behavior before going live. A playlist’s file changes are not equivalent to an OBS scene transition.
Connect OBS to YouTube and test the stream
- In YouTube Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key for your encoder setup. In OBS, enter the connection details in the streaming settings. Keep the stream key private.
- Use YouTube Help’s current encoder recommendations for your chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Do not select a bitrate simply because it is associated with a transition duration; encoder settings depend on the video configuration.
- Start a test stream or use the available preview before the real broadcast. Check that the YouTube preview shows the intended video and that the audio is present.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health while testing and monitor it during the broadcast. OBS and YouTube both recommend testing the setup rather than assuming that a successful local preview guarantees a healthy stream.
Transition configuration in OBS and connection or stream-health checks in YouTube are separate parts of the setup. A transition can look correct locally while the encoder connection or outgoing stream still needs attention.

Copyright and pre-recorded content
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed to stream each video and its audio on YouTube, and review YouTube’s current rules for live content. A scene transition changes presentation; it does not grant rights to material or make reused content permissible. Keep records of permissions or licenses where relevant, and do not assume that owning a copy of a video means you can broadcast it.

Troubleshooting scene transitions and playback
- The wrong scene goes live: In Studio Mode, check that you selected the intended scene in the left preview pane, then use Transition. The right pane is the live/program output.
- A video is blank or does not start: Confirm the Media Source points to the correct local file and that the format is supported. Reopen its properties and check its playback options; a source configured to show nothing after playback ends will be blank once it finishes.
- A video takes time to appear after switching back: If Close file when inactive is enabled, the file may need time to load again when its source becomes active. Allow for that in the sequence or review the setting.
- The next file plays, but there is no scene transition: You may be using a playlist within a single source. To control a transition between segments, create separate scenes and switch between them.
- VLC Video is unavailable or does not work: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- YouTube does not show the expected stream: Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your selected output settings.
- A scene does not switch automatically at the end of a file: The official OBS guides cited here do not establish automatic scene switching on Media Source end. Treat the handoff as manual unless you have verified a compatible plugin, script, or control workflow for your OBS version.
Or let it run in the cloud

Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
