For a clear Hindi audiobook stream, set the narration level at its source first, use OBS’s meters to avoid clipping, then make a test recording and listen before going live. OBS does not prescribe one universal loudness target: its main meter shows peaks, while its black VU indicator is only a short-window estimate of loudness. For YouTube Live stereo audio, use the platform’s listed 128 Kbps audio bitrate and 44.1 kHz sample rate.
Set up the narration source in OBS
Choose the audio you intend viewers to hear
Your narration may come from a microphone, an audio interface, or media playback. In OBS, watch the Audio Mixer while the narration is active and confirm that the intended source’s meter moves. Avoid unintentionally mixing desktop audio, alerts, or a second microphone into the audiobook.

If the meter stays still, check that the correct device is selected, that playback or recording is active, and that the device is connected. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide recommends beginning at the device itself: “Always start at the device in question.”
Set source gain before the OBS fader
Begin with the gain control on the microphone or audio interface, or the relevant operating-system or application level for a playback source. This sets the signal level reaching OBS. Once that input is reasonable and clean, use the OBS mixer fader to balance the source in the final mix. Add a Gain filter only if needed to correct the level; added gain uses up headroom and can make clipping more likely. To add a filter, open the source’s Filters menu from the mixer and choose a filter such as Gain, as described in the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

What should OBS audio levels be for YouTube?
Do not treat a single meter number as a universal target for every narrator. The main colored meter is peak-oriented: it shows signal peaks, not a complete measure of perceived loudness. OBS’s black VU indicator is an RMS-style estimate integrated over 300 ms, and OBS notes that it is not a modern standards-based loudness meter. Listen to the narration as well as watching the meters.
OBS identifies -20 dBFS as its Alignment Level and -9 dBFS as its Permitted Maximum Level. These are meter reference points and headroom guidance, not instructions that every audiobook must average or peak at those values. Keep the signal below clipping; do not push narration into the red as a goal. The OBS meter’s peak hold remains visible for 20 seconds, which can help reveal a loud syllable or sudden noise after it occurs. These meter details are explained in OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details, published February 13, 2022.

Adjust for intelligibility, not just a number
Read a representative passage at your normal pace and volume. Include softer lines and emphatic words, and listen for words that become hard to understand, peaks that distort, sudden background noise, and changes in level that sound distracting. Make small changes at the source, then check the result in OBS. If the source is already clean but sits too low or high in the mix, adjust the OBS fader; avoid solving every level problem by adding gain.

Monitor the signal and check stereo routing
Listen at the earliest available headphone or monitor output, then check what OBS is sending. OBS’s guide describes using Audio Monitoring in Advanced Audio Properties. Compare the monitored sound with the source so you can catch distortion, noise, or an unexpected mix before the stream.

OBS defaults to stereo. A mono narration source is normally played through both left and right channels for viewers. If a stereo source has audio on only one side, inspect its routing; use Downmix to Mono where appropriate. Also confirm that the headphone or monitor output itself is not one-sided.
Use YouTube’s live audio settings
YouTube’s live encoder settings list AAC or MP3 audio for stereo, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and a 128 Kbps stereo audio bitrate. For a straightforward audiobook configured as stereo, use that stereo profile; Hindi narration does not require a different codec setting.

YouTube lists 5.1 audio separately: AAC, 48 kHz, and 384 Kbps. That profile is relevant only if you intentionally have a 5.1 surround workflow. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport; RTMPS is a connection protocol, not an audio loudness setting.

Make a test recording before going live
- Read a representative passage. Use the same source, pace, and speaking intensity you expect during the broadcast. Include quiet phrases and louder words.
- Record in OBS and listen back. Check the recording on headphones or speakers at a normal playback level. Listen for clipped syllables, distortion, pumping or distracting level changes, background noise, and words that are difficult to understand.
- Adjust one thing at a time. Correct input gain at the device first, then use the OBS fader for final balance. Re-record if a change affects the sound.
- Check YouTube before the audience arrives. Confirm the preview sounds right and watch stream health during the event. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
OBS also recommends a representative test and listening through the available monitoring path. A level that looks acceptable on the meter still needs to sound clear throughout the passage.
Keep the stream and its content ready
Confirm that the narration and any other audio in the broadcast are intended for this stream and that you have the rights needed to use them on YouTube. A clean meter cannot prevent a copyright or content-policy issue. Keep a copy of your recording and check YouTube’s stream preview and health rather than assuming the local OBS mix is identical to the delivered stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream built from an uploaded audiobook recording or playlist, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud rather than requiring OBS and a home computer to stay on. The workflow is: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
- Nothing has to stay powered on at home; the stream continues from the cloud.
- Uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
